Distant worlds or Armada 2526 ?

Post by Thomgryn »

I recently became aware of two new MOO-Style Games: Distant Worlds and Armada 2526....

A a MOO 2 Junkie I thought about buying either distant worlds or Armada 2526.

So can anyone give me a recommendation which is better or more similar to the Master of Orion experience ???

Cheers,
T.

From what I read DW is better than Armada. Some say Armada is a good game still though, but you can't make your own ships in Armada. I got DW and I don't regret getting it. Since I lost my job, I am on this game about 4 or more hours a day. There is a very big learning curve here though. Tell us what you like, and we can help you better in what to decide.

Basically this game is like MOO, but in real time like Europa Universallis and Hearts of Iron series. You can pause when ever you want. I was very leary of the real time aspect, but it brings the game to life, and it works. This game is not perfect but the developers are hard at work making patches to fix anything wrong.

YOYO.

This is not the first thread with this title.

Armada 2526 is traditional; DW is... different.

I praised Armada 2526 HIGHLY on its release. I am not playing it now, and am playing DW.

Armada 2526 will continue to be updated, and will be a good game in its own right for a long time to come. They got the turn-based formula correct and its a wonderful game. They removed some features (ship design) that weren't helping things; their goal is turn based space strategy on a faster pace than a moo2.

I will not be playing armada2526 in the immediate future. I will be on DW. The developers of DW got the scope and pacing correct and really nailed the game I have DREAMED about for at least 6 years.

Dreamed and fantasized, and they are working to improve it steadily.

And thats it.

DW for me.

I'll be advertising it on the game forums I frequent in the coming days.

I think Armada 2526 is better if you like combat and DW is better if you like empire building. I think the combat system and the amount of combat in Armada is better but I think the overall feel of running an Empire is better in DW. Both worth having IMHO.

I think they are both great. Well worth playing. I would buy both of them because they have lots of differences and you can get them cheap as digital download. Your 4x space needs will be well met with them.

Its basicly a retro-space combat. Its just like in the previous armada game from 80/90s except in pseudo-3d instead of 2d. I guess they could have modernized it but they obviously didnt have the time and money to do it. Still after a bitter start I have grown to like it. Its not all bad.

But if you have to choose one I would definetly go for DW. Armada is average 4x with som nice features and somwhat challenging AI. DW seems like a diamond in rough. It has tons of detail that suprises me even after many long hours of playing.

Distant Worlds is by far the superior product.

I like the fact in Armada that you dont have ship design. I dont like designing ships myself.

This just means that you got standardized ships.. You don't HAVE TO design them in DW either, the AI can handle that and make standard design too !

I know, but sometimes the AI makes silly designs + it is wise to add solar collectors and fuel cells (even though I wished the AI would take care of it).
