In addition to extraordinarily long and vivid sunsets, skies became progessively more brilliant after the cessation of normal twilight.

BTW, here is what sunsets looked like years after one of the biggest volcanic eruption in our time - the Krakatoa in Indonesia (1883 eruption)...
