air recon?

Post by jack54 »

Hi great game system; currently my favorite interface. There's so much good stuff in this system all the info pop-ups, the order of battle screen, div insignia, the little dice, ect., really, a great job.

I was wondering about "AIR RECON". so far I haven't found any way to get a look behind the front lines. Is it included in the unit observation ratings and not under player control?

There is no air recon in the system, but some units have a recon rating which allows a look behind enemy lines. It is not in player control other than moving a high recon rating unit close to front line.

Note that not all "recon" units actually give a recon bonus, as the Soviet recon units don't have a recon bonus in ATD2 for some peculiar reason.

There is a way to simulate air recon/better battlefield intel by adjusting the hidden ranges in the editor, but they're the same for both sides in the stock ATD2 scenario.

This is one item I mentioned many moons ago either here or at SSG.  It seems like something that should be included.  But, I've already spoke my mind so I'll let it lie.

thanks all!

I had a feeling it was not included but I was hoping I missed something; still a great system. (Would've been nice if interdiction missions had a chance of spotting something.)

With the current hidden bonus modifiers for terrain and the hidden ranges that can be adjusted in the editor, there are ways to abstract air recon, but it is indeed not literally there as a feature. Keep in mind that the hidden ranges do depend on the state of the weather in the air, not on the ground.

Actual air recon would be nice, of course. There are also other ways, you could make parts of the map a drop zone and include "recon missions" paradrop units with 0 movement, no attack capability and no defence, but a nice recon bonus which you can paradrop somewhere.
