Correct. I think Sardaukar's point is adding more bases will increase this issue and slow it down even more. Adding more bases is to Japan's benefit, and I am not sure that will be good for play balance.

Indeed. If supply movement between bases stays as it is, adding bunch of new bases would practically kill even the remaining supply movement in China. Plus it'd deprive Chinese units of places where they actually (even when it's really weird) can get supply..and that is non-base hexes...

Except when all of those new bases are supply sources...

I was thinking you might go that route. [8D]

Treespider, just wondering on the China stuff...

Should the Chinese also have garrison requirements for a good portion of the Chinese bases? The different Chinese factions didn't necessarily play well together, and it's hard to see Chiang leaving important places ungarrisoned...not from fear of the Japanese as much as fear of Mao or the Communists. Also, local warlords would be reluctant to leave their own territories ungarrisoned as well.

Can you set supply into dot bases? Did not know that. Very interesting. Can you set supply for only one side to a base, or for both sides?

might want to throw in a couple of aircraft database fixes while you're at it: setting production for the Ohka and fixing the double accuracy on the Soviet biplanes, and a few other nigglers (could check with TimTom for more).

like where you're going with this GC! Can you do one for a Dec. 8 start too?

Either way, appreciate the work.

I plan on getting started with my mod of the Grand Campaign....scenario 1.

1. In the works - permanently restricting a "fair" portion (not all) of the Kwantung Army and Kwantung Air Force....to prevent the wholesale evacuation of Manchuria.

2. More bases and higher garrison requirements in China....the Northern Chinese plain will likely see a dot base in just about every hex.

3. The addition of some dot bases in Northern Burma

4. Give the Japanese the ability to divide some the IJN Fighter Hikotai.

5. Incorporate Don's babies....
Why are you part or some of the Kwantung Army and Air Force?

One idea I've been toying around with is reclassifying some aircraft types from Bombers to Patrol Aircraft.

The aircraft I have in mind are:

Nells, Betty's, B-17D's, B-17E's, & LB-30's

In my opinion the available missions for Patrol Aircraft are a better match for those particular aircraft and how they were historically utilized (from Dec 41 through 43) in the Pacific when compared to the Bomber mission availabilty.

My primary reasoning is to eliminate the Ground Attack option from the available mission profiles for these aircraft. IIRC Transport would be added and Ground Attack and City Attack would be eliminated.

Patrol Aircraft can still launch Naval Attacks, Port Attacks and Airfield Attacks.....as well as Recon and Naval Search. All missions these aircraft performed.

They did not however launch Operation Cobra style tactical Ground Support missions....

Anyhow just something to chew on...

Because historically the Japanese did not remove a whole bunch from Manchuria early on to go wage a land war in China. In fact Manchuria was actually reinforced...how many times do we see that?

Hi,

Have you thought of tweaking ship ammunition levels? IMHO, ships run out of ammunition (esp. AAA) bit too early.

Treespider -

By classifying them as Patrol aircraft, won't that make them water landers like the Emily, Catalina and so forth. I assume you are using a house rule not to base them on coastal hexes with an AV support?

Possibly --- as I said I'm just considering it and have yet to test. The best recourse may simply be to leave them as 4E bombers....

Ok...did my quick and dirty look over of the Japanese OoB coming and going to the Kwantung Army.

After Game Start but prior to 1944 the following units LEFT the Kwantung Army and were reassigned to commands outside of Manchuria. These units can be made Normal restricted units able to be purchased at anytime. They are listed as follows in with the date in YYMMDD format -

420502 -
4449 - 53d Ind Eng Bn
4450 - 54th Ind Eng Bn
4451 - 55th Ind Eng Bn

(The above were added 420320 after being reassigned from the south)

420704 -
3330 - 8th Tank Regt

(The above was reassigned to Kwantung 420129 from 16th Army)

420917
3794 - 6th RF Gun Battalion
3637 - 4th Medium Arty Regt.

421020
3907 - 25th RF Gun Bn
3426 - 28th RF Gun Bn
3603 - 31st Road Const Bn
3605 - 51st Const Co.

431030
2nd Area Army HQ

431116
2nd South Seas Detachment
3rd South Sea Detachment
1st Amphib Brig

----------

After 1944 a boatload (no pun intended) of units are reassigned from the Kwantung Army and leave Manchuria. There are two ways to handle these units...

1st - Have the assigned Restricted Permanent to the Kwantung Army. They will never be allowed to be reassigned...then at some date in the future the unit is withdrawn and returned to the map as a Static Attached reinforcement that can then be purchased with PP.

2nd - Have the unit assigned Restricted Permanent to an HQ that is assigned Restricted Temp (RT) to the Kwantung Army. The RT HQ would be a reinforcement. As such the units assigned to it would also be restricted. Upon arrival on the map the RT HQ could be re-assigned to an unrestricted HQ allowing all the units assigned to the RT HQ to now be moved by sea. The one drawback with this approach is the unit is permanently assigned to the RT HQ.

I plan on using both options...

----------

Also as noted a number of units were assigned back to the Kwantung Army after participating in the initial expansion. These units will be designated to withdraw around the time of the re-assignment and will re-appear 2 weeks later in Manchuria as a reinforcement assigned to the Kwantung Army.

Continuing to pluck away at my Kwantung Army restrictions -

My House Rule - Restricted Units in Manchuria and Korea cannot leave those areas until the unit is unrestricted.

Under the stock AE game the Japanese player begins accumulating PP allowing them to free units immediately...whereas historically Manchuria was actually reinforced and the bulk of the units were not reassigned from manchuria until 1944.

This mod will simulate some of the issues the Japanese had with the Kwantung Army by restricting a substantial portion of the Kwantung Army until 1944. This mod is not intended to simulate a War in Russia Gambit by the Japanese.

After some toying around with the editor I found a mechanism wherein I can make divisions remain restricted until late 1943 -1944...whereupon they can be released by the Japanese player.

1. I broke the divisions down into component regiments and either an engineer Unit or a signals unit.
2. The inf regiments were then made "static attached" to their HQ....which means their HQ cannot be changed by the player, so if assigned to a restricted HQ the unit will remain restricted.
3. I then set the Eng/Sig Unit to arrive at a date in the future depending on the unit...so for instance 1 Jan 44.

When the eng/sig unit arrives, the component inf regts and sig unit can be combined into the parent div. Because the parent div is not 'Static Attached' the player is free to reassign the div to an unrestricted HQ allowing the Division to leave Manchuria.

The following divisions remained in the Kwantung Army until the listed release dates.... to provide a little flexibility I have the reinforcing eng/sig unit that combines with the inf regts to form the parent div arriving 2-6 months earlier...

10 Feb 44
14th Div
29th Div

26 Jun 44
9th Div
28th Div

5 Jul 44
24th Div

18 Jul 44
8th Div

24 Jul 44
2nd Armored
1st Div
10th Div

27 Sept 44
23rd Div

22 Dec 44
12th Div

23 Jan 45
71st Div

15 Mar 45
25th Div

I like it. Is there a similar delaying mechanism for air units?

I haven't fiddled with the Air HQ's yet...but I imagine if I create sub units that need to combine then I can do the same thing with air units...

Looking good Treespider,

Have you considered adding Garrison requirements for the Allies in Australia.

IRL, fairly large forces (Bdes+) had to stay in Perth, Sydney, Newcastle, Pt Kembla & Melbourne which should stop the "free" use of a major part of the Australian Militia Forces.

I might have a workaround for this...not sure if the garrison effects are appropriate ...but I guess it could be considered rioting by a frightened populace[:D]

I guess my possible solution depends on what I can do with invasion triggers and the like as Andy did with the Indians.

More like defending the local talent from Marines on I&I. [8D]

IRL, 1st Div was a training formation based in Sydney and where the "underage" recruits were posted. Units in West Oz were defending against an Invasion well into 1943, 1st Armoured & 2nd Div were here well beyond any threat to the area.
