RE: Pre-Release Files

Post by Smeulders »

Hey guys, it may be a bit late for me to chime in, and maybe you've already taken a look at this, but have you taken a look at the Russian replacements for ships/planes ? The reduced manoeuvrability for the Russian biplanes shows you've thought about an early activating Russian front, so maybe you can make sure that in this case, the Russians have a chance to replace some losses. As it stands now there is no production for AFV's until far in 44' and only 16 fighters a month (and this stops in 43') . I'm in no way saying that the Russians should get a avalanche of material, the Western front still exists of course, but the ability to replace losses in armoured formations and the air force should at least be higher than the non-existent that is the case now.

I would put the 88mm in the game , the Japanese have enough issues without having less than historic heavy AA.

Indeed, why make the gun available only for late-war units? The original was captured from the Chinese after the battle of Nanjing in 1937, quickly reverse-engineered, put into production, and put into service in 1939, mainly in the Home Islands, although some were captured in Rangoon. With a production of at least 500, possibly 1000, this was a significant slice of the Japanese heavy AA OOB. I wonder how it got overlooked for the official scenarios when the 105 mm Type 14 is in there whose production total was 70.

Edit: I should have read later posts in this thread before commenting. Obviously you were already aware of the issues.

Also the 5"/38 includes a director bonus which is prob not justified on destroyers ( it should have some but not as good as the directors on the new capital ships). The 200 acc ( based on rof * 10 + control bonus) is prob reasonable for mid war ships eg Iowa class , prob 180 or so for destroyers and 70-80 or so on the CVs.

Two directors were mainly associated with the 5"/38 DP. The Mk33 was originally designed for Farragut-class DDs but also used on many other ships including CAs Portland, Indianapolis, and Wichita, the New Mexico-class BB, and a number of carriers. Beginning with the North Carolina class BB and the Sims class DD, the Mk37 was used on all kinds of ships including auxiliaries (AS, AD, and three T3-S2-A1 AO). If you want to differentiate between the directors, which is appropriate, as the Mk37 was distinctly better than the Mk33, this goes right across all ship types. Basically you can say that all DDs built after 1940 had a better director than most pre-war BBs, CAs, carriers, and destroyers. All Yorktown-class carriers had the Mk33 in 1941, only Enterprise was later converted to Mk37s.

85 Mk33 were installed by December 1941, and total production was 124 by 1945. At least 801 Mk37 were produced - the fire control radar Mk12, which was exclusively used on Mk37 directors, had a production run of 801, but the Mk37 was also combined with the Mk28 radar where weight was critical, as in the DMS derived from the Livermore class.

Indeed, why make the gun available only for late-war units?
I gave it to some but not all Japanese AA regiments available at the start. All those in the Home Islands, unless I missed something, one on Formosa and one in Korea. Also, to all fortresses in Home Islands that used 75mm before.

EDIT: According to the answer in the Land OOB thread, devices should match TOE, otherwise there might be a proble. This causes a problem, because there's not a lot of Japanese AA unit types present at the beginning. John, you probably should create a new TOE, based on TOE # 2197, except with device # 1918 (88mm Flak) instead of 75mm guns and assign IJA Air Defense AA regiments in Home Islands + 55th AA regiment in Formosa + 41st AA regiment in Fusan, Korea to it. You might assign some other units to this TOE, if you want. This is easy work (just copy-paste TOE, change the device number, then change TOE ID for appropriate units and press "use TOE" - should have thought of that himself[:(]), so you can just do it before compiling the final version. This is not worth sending the files to me again.

Complete

Post by John 3rd »

It is done.

Juan--Made all the changes spoken about in your email.  Thank you for getting the artwork and scenario description taken care of.

FatR--Got the AA handled.  Did add the 88 to about 6-8 units some Regiment-sized some Company-sized.  Put 4 of them into the Pacific (Saigon, Truk, and Roi Namur) to add a little bang out in this area.  These small Companies have only 8 Guns but they're cool to have available.

No more changes until we look at a second version of this later.

Posting Mods?

Post by John 3rd »

Thank you Sir. I've already sent the Scenario Files to FatR who plans a game and also Zemke_4. Send me your email address and I'll shoot you the Zip File.

How does one get their Mods posted somewhere for people to download?

John,
looks like people are hosting them all over the place and even in the tech section because it has a bigger upload capability (although I think this is wrong and Matrix should just start giving us some space to unify this stuff). I'm willing to host them on my Video tutorial site or help you set up a quick page like I helped with Empires Amblaze mod for witp, but maybe Juan has room or you could try Spooky's or Rogues Site or contact Andrew Brown ...

RE: Posting Mods?

Hi john can you send me a copy bklooste   at , gmail dot com.

I will use it as a base for my own scenario which is a bit different and explores what would have happend if the US didnt bug/tap the Japanese delgation at the Wash. Naval treaty (Japan gets 70% instead of 60%) and makes it more interesting for the allied player early and more interesting for Japan later .  The US is more beligerant , supports China and guarantees IndoChina. War breaks out about  5 months earlier . I have about 20 pages so far..

Allies get US Armour ,some arty and US styled divs ( instead of German) in China , French forces including the 8" gun sub. Montana , Quad turret South Dakotas , and earlier BBs .  Japan has a slightly less advanced front line eg Ichang is Chinese and the Japanese now need to take Indo China as well.
Earlier ramp up of ground forces ( basically an extra div + free french forces)   , increased air replacements earlier esp P38 and B17s  ( but note earlier start date) and an enlarged AVG ( with the A26 bombers they weres suppose to have) active in China already ,enable earlier counterplay.

For Japan
More choices and counters but Japan cant build all..eg they can build the Liz .. But...
Navy:
Yamatos delayed 3 years ( aiming for 20" guns) you can abandon them an interim BC is built.  Kaga and here sister (which was build ) as BBs. . A focus on Old BBs  but new stuff is all CVs and light ships ( no CL even) . The Navy and Air stuff is all pretty realistic and similar in style to your mod but the extra 10% from the Naval treaty changes a lot . War time subs rationalized.

AF: similar to your mod but the IJN air joined with IJAAF to form the IJAF this occurs before the mid to late 30s polotics . A lot of stuff to make it simpler .

Army:
After having more issues in China durring the battle fo Shanghai  ( with more US support ) a bit of a bigger overhall , standard TOE for all units and the Japanes Divs instead of going from 4 regs to 3 regs all become Brigades ( divided into Brigade A and B of 6 battalions each of different categories A ( first line)  , B (second line)  or C ( militia)  )  , independent brigades , battalions and Regiments are all absorbed , the brigades break down into 2 battalion units. The Army stuff is less realistic though ; While they did operate as Brigades TOEs were all over the shop helps playability and planning ( eg load outs , defences etc) for a smoother game.

Was the version you've sent to me final. I might start preparing a first turn ahead of time, if so (lots of orders related to shipping, training, production and so on are not really dependent on the agreed starting conditions).

John, if you like, I can host them with my AltWNT stuff, though its just a fileserver with no webpage, or as Damian has said, you could ask one of the guys with proper websites to host it there along with a synopsis.
