I don't know about real life, but in a recent PBEM with Chickenboy, nine of his destroyed a trio of my old battle ships during a thunderstorm![X(] I'll never mess with that type of plane again![:(][:D]

About ASW capabilities of this Patrol Float Plane:

North of the Philippines, in 1945 three American submarines were sunk by radar equipped Kawanishi H8Ks

Geez, such inaccuracies...[:'(]

First off, it was 12. Second off, they put one TT into one BB and 5 into another [X(]. It was the mines that caused the balance of the damage, dude.[:'(]

PYBs and Flying boats do seem a little over powered.

They make great Kamikazes too in times of desperation. They are able to penetrate the armor of even fast BBs. I had one hit the New Mexico in a PBEM and did 44 system damage and 21 major engine damage and put the ship in dry dock for three months.

no float == doesnt penetrate see the CD discussion. sys and engine damage can be done by lots or bug super struct hits.

Yeah, I imagine those flying ships would make quite a mess regardless of what they hit.

We AFBs call this "historical embellishment". [;)] It makes our excuses sound so much better.....

From what I can find on the web the first operational use of the H8K was on 4 March 42 when 3 were sent to bomb PH again. By that time Makassar was enjoying the fruits of Japanese liberation.
