USN Fleet Carriers

Post by Smeulders »

Here are emblems for most of the USN Fleet Carriers + AV Langley (she was CV-1 after all)

Still missing are the following
CV Bon Homme Richard
CV Bennington
CV Franklin
CV Randolph

Edit: All the "II" versions got their real life badge, of course these won't really match if you decide to change the names.

A quick question for those interested in ship badges, which of the following two options do you prefer ?

Option 1 is getting the ship badges at around 60x60 pixels, this is slightly smaller than the max of 70x70, but it gives a better alignment with the ship image which also has a hight of about 60p. It also allows for at least a small border between the two images. Of course option two, using the complete 70x70 gives a somewhat bigger patch.

I like the smaller 60x60 pixels ship badges. The larger ones don't seem right, akward, look out of place, overpower the beautiful ship graphics.

Set 003: Complete WITP-AE set of early Dutch aircraft updating to the National Flag insignia in Mar'42.

Set 004: Complete WITP-AE set Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm aircraft updating to the C1 then Blue/White roundels in Aug'43. The 1945 -O- insignia is not included as Cathartes didn't get that far with his Accurate Art Set....

Reg!!! Thanks for all the hard work!!!!! I appreciate you putting this together!!! This is very AWESOME!!!!

Small!!

You may lose detail, but 70x70 isn't enough of an improvement to justify (IMHO) the lesser overall atheistic appeal.

That's a large majority for the smaller badges it seems, very good.

The next batch are for the Dutch navy, not the highest quality as the source images were of rather low quality themselves. All DD are included, 2 CL (No badges found for Java and Sumatra), the CLAA and 2 O-class subs.

Some work has started on the USN BB, but I can hardly find any badges for them, I'm starting to wonder how widely specially designed patches were used in WWII, if it's that hard to find them for ships that had 1000s of crew.

Hi All: Just wanted to thank everyone for their work on this. For Reg, noted that Corsairs
and B25s d/n seem to get art updates done. Is there some place where they are at?
Has anyone noted that some scenarios have diff unit IDs and that therefore, the wrong
badges/patches appear?
Thx.

May I suggest that in the case that you do not find a emblem for a USN BB that instead you use the state flag as it appeared during that time period. I've even looked through the USS Alabama cruise book and there is no emblem/symbol that represents the ship. However, I do see in alot of the photos that the state flag of Alabama is displayed in various group photos. I would assume that the other BB's of that time did the same.

A good suggestion, I'll do that once I get around to the BB again. Right now I'm doing the subs (patches aplenty there, so far I'm only missing a couple S-class subs), so that may take a short while yet.

Rotating Aircraft SideArt - RAF part 1 (A to H)

Post by Reg »

Hi Everyone,

Set005: RAF part 1

The next mini-installment for your downloading pleasure. This time it is first part of ?? for the RAF aircraft sideart consisting of aircraft with names from A to H.

This includes Beaufighters, Beaufort, Blenheims, Catalina, Buffalo, Hudson, Hurricane etc....

===================================
Installation instructions:

To make things easy, just unzip this distribution into your AE game folder (after making sure the "use folders" option is set). The zip file includes the Art directory.

To verify correct installation, just load the Andy Mac's Buccaneer scenario. As this is set in Oct'43, the RAF aircraft side art should have updated to the C1 roundels. (Still with the red center but with a reduced white band...)

===================================

Download the attachment in this post....

==================================================
THIS DOWNLOAD IS NOW OBSOLETE!!!

Please use the index to the rest of the Aircraft Rotating Art here.... to locate the latest version of this Rotating Artwork Set.

Below is an example of what art is included in this distribution:

Once again thanks to Cathartes for permission to use his wonderful artwork.

Whilst putting this together I had to make a few arbitrary decisions. The increase in the number of aircraft slots has diluted the available artwork so I had to make some minor tweaks (the ones with the pink backgrounds) to make the aircraft illustrations unique.

The Hurricanes are a good example as there are now ten variants. I have preserved the aircraft images (including the armament) as much as I could but have added squadron codes to differentiate between them. I have tried to be authentic as possible and picked squadron codes that match the AE database or match actual color schemes I found. (With hindsight I could have made the aircraft letter the same as the aircraft model to make identification more obvious ...) Others I changed as whole minutes of internet research have indicated my changes are more authentic for this period. I hope you don't mind.

Edit: I also arbitrarily picked Nov'43 as the month for the SEAC insignia changeover even though "South East Asia Command (SEAC) formed in Nov. 1943, but what was to be known as SEAC markings were already being implemented before this time".

The good thing about the rotating artwork code is now if you don't like an image, you can now just inset a single graphic and don't have to update the entire artwork package like you used to. [:)]

I'm getting to it (see above). 150 slots down, only 350 to go.... [:D]

Are you volunteering to start at the other end?? [:D] [:D]

I started with the sideart I thought would be the highest profile or used the most. It's probably a bit frustrating with this artwork being released in dribs and drabs but I decided that everyone might as well take advantage what I have done rather than have to wait forever for a full release.
ORIGINAL: Reg post #97

The aircraft side art I am reformatting actually came from WITP!!!

A while ago, Cathartes released a set of A_PlaneSide.bmp files that reflected the changing aircraft markings and camo schemes over time. Unfortunately the WITP game mechanics don't support this (unlike AE) so you have to manually change over the art files on the appropriate dates.

These files are still available at Cathartes Accurate Air Site

National Flag LCU zip...

For you "do it yourself" modders.
Just copy and rename the bitmaps to the units you want.[;)]

Had to edit a few flags.
The program was reading them as overlays for some of the flags with large amounts of red in them
Added a couple of smaller nations too.

Please redownload again to update.
Thanks...

USN Subs

Post by Smeulders »

Another update, a part of the USN subs.
Included are some S-boats and the first 30 or so other subs in the editor. (S-boats are incomplete)
Multiple subs have alternative patches included, view the ReadMe for more details.

Hi Reg: I used the site you ref to use the air art for WITP. Works fine w/the utility.
My knowledge of how to do this stuff is non-existant, but if I can help, let me know
how and I will try to assist.
