One really annoying thing

The other races constantly ask me to trade maps. I dont wish to trade maps. I will never be willing to trade a map
But I cant turn that question off, w/o turning other messages off.
It is truly annoying

Also why is it I can build on some colonies by clicking on the colony
But I can never build a resort by clicking on the colony?
what is up w that?

These two issues add to the 'work' element of the game, distracting from the play element.

there's an option for that. i never tried it so maybe it's not hands off as you want, but the description sure makes it sound like it is

It will still ask you about diplomatic stuff.  Otherwise, yes, its all automated.
