Now is where, Dear Readers, and fellow members of the War Council, that I solicit your advice. I have a decision to make on this Western Australia adventure.
Perth: KB raided the harbor at Perth. I had set all the torp planes to AIRFIELD ATTACK, to hit the airbase, as I have found DBs get pummelled on that mission. The escort was very poor, and to my surprise, I found ships to hit, but it was not a smashing success; although I neutralized the TF for the time being, I didn't sink anything, and lost a ton of planes, over 70 Vals and Kates to be exact:
Morning Air attack on TF, near Perth at 49,147
Weather in hex: Light rain
Raid detected at 120 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 45 minutes
Japanese aircraft
D3A1 Val x 78
Allied aircraft
P-39D Airacobra x 13
P-40E Warhawk x 7
Japanese aircraft losses
D3A1 Val: 17 destroyed, 13 damaged
Allied Ships
BB Valiant, Bomb hits 14, heavy fires
DD Thracian, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
BB Warspite, Bomb hits 9, on fire
DD Hotspur, Bomb hits 1, on fire
CL Caradoc
DD Nestor, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
CL Birmingham, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires
Another attack just put more bombs on BBs, and lost me more planes. The escort somehow was separated, so this was bad for pilots.
I can replace the planes and pilots without too much trouble with a stop in Port Hedland, so this will pass. It does show a naval commitment, which is OK by me. I just wish we could have squared off against these ships.
In the meantime, Perth and the area around are filling up with troops. This isn't a surprise, as any US troops in Australia probably dropped whatever they are prepping for, and boarded a train for Perth.
I admit I am getting cold feet. I need 2-1 superiority in troops to really steamroll Western Australia, which means 4+ divisions will get me stuck. I should have thought through that ahead of time, but there it is. I would be very surprised if he can't get 4 divisions there. What next? Some options:
1. Keep going. Send in the rest of my available units, push, and hope for the best. BEST CASE: We clear the area and capture piles of troops. WORST CASE: We stall, and eventually have to do a risky evacuation, while in the meantime the US is pounding me elsewhere on the perimeter.
2. Keep going, but prepare to go. This would mean halting new troops shipments, advance toward Perth with what I have and keep building Geraldton behind me, but start gathering shipping for a quick evac. To make things complicated, those 2 Bdes are on the trail to Carnarvon; while that's a bad place for them, it also blocks a clean retreat for me overland. If I decide this, I won't get West Oz. What will I get? Well, I probably bought some time with all the US and Australian troops that are dropping offensive preps, and prepping for Perth instead.
3. Get out now: Not inclined to do this really, but putting it out there
It is August 1942; the Allies are in good shape in terms of ground troops now, so a protracted land campaign is not in my favor. They are NOT in good shape in LBA as I have shot down tons of fighters. They have CVs though. I really hate to give up the strategic initiative, especially with the naval shape I am in. But a land campaign in Australia is not appealing. Decisions..........
If I pull out, I should have another objective in mind, and not just wait. That's bad. The alternative is to set a trap somewhere and hope he attacks and brings CVs. Decisions.......
