Cheap Ram?

Post by Toby42 »

Does anyone know where to get some cheap DDR ram? I have an older computer that uses PC2700 DDR chips. Every place that I've priced it, it is more expensive than the DDR3 on my newer machine!!!

Hey Tony,

I just had to buy some for my cousin's pc. I got it onsale at Micro Center for $34 a meg. I would also try Fry's, and if you can't find anything else, try www.directron.com, they had the next cheapest at $41/1 Gig stick.

Good luck!

Crucial has RAM of a decent quality and they stand by their product. I have used them multiple times over for both desktops and laptop RAM. I never got a bad stick from them-but it does happen.

They have a scanner to make sure you get the correct RAM. http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/in ... derApr10US

Tiger Direct has some very good deals-hard to beat. It seems like there are more problems with faulty RAM from them-although, I have used them a couple of times w/o problems.

You can also check out Newegg.com. I buy bits and pieces from them from time to time.

It looks like there are a lot of choices for Ram buys. I've bought Crucial through Amazon before and I haven't had any problems. I hate to put money in a five year old machine, but I've only 1 gig on it and that is pushing it for most games!

I've also had outstanding customer service from them, too.

Crucial is a brand, but why not just go to the source?

A decent machine from (seems like yours is a sturdy machine) 5 years ago should easily take 3 gigs of RAM. Even just getting it up to 2 will put you over the top of most gaming requirements (I only have one game that puts total use over 2 GB). If your machine has a graphics card you can squeeze some more life out of it.

With 40 to 80 bucks you can get a drastic improvement in your computer. Just don't aim for the lowest price-check out the ratings-not all RAM is equal. I generally stay with Kingston or Crucial. Speaking of equal-even if you are certain that you can match your old RAM modules, I would not try to incorporate the old with the new-use an all new set. Keep the old ones for a back up just in case one of the new ones is faulty. You can stay up and running while waiting for a replacement.

About Newegg; I have purchased from them also-good outfit. Retail stores cannot compete with these online stores-not even close. I have bought my last two monitors from them also.
