clearing out traffic jams

Post by taltamir »

very late game, I noticed certain planets, example loros (with its delicious loros fruit) had HUGE massive traffic jams... countless freighters, suck... The solution was to use the constructors panel to select its starport (because I couldn't select it within the system... too laggy, and too many ships on top of it; literally causing game hanging when attempting to select it), then retrofit it from a small star port to a large star port (could do such a size upgrade from the ships window; only retrofit it to other small space ports)... the game actually lagged (not that that is a bad thing) as it processed all that extra stuff... it was showing its shields stuck on 600, fuel at 240, and energy at 0 for a while until the traffic jam cleared, then it jumped to current values and was showing their changes in real time as it would normally as the jam cleared up.

There should really be an AI mechanism where, if there is a traffic jam, build a space port, then upgrade it to larger and larger size until its big enough to handle the traffic without jamming up.

Part of the downside is, since I cleared the traffic jam my game has been lagging due to the MASSIVE amount of private ships flying about (who were just stalled before).

I have a few dozens of other designs, but most are of latest design... of those I have: 3496 small freighters 2740 medium freighters 1509 large freighters 486 passenger ships

And a large portion of those thousands were there waiting for loros fruit.

I think the port clog is actually some kind of weird bug, because I have noticed even after I delete or destroy all of the jammed ships by siccing thousands of Kaltors on them, the there still are ships listed as waiting, so some sort of ghost ship is jamming the queue by refusing to dock, and yet there isn't a timeout mechanism. Can't be the number of ports alone, as the Colossal Space Port I made has 256 docking bays.

well... there are both... i HAVE seen a port clog that seems to be due to a bug... but i have also seen it due to lack of ports... for example, a small space port on the planet with loros fruit... the proof is that once i upgraded to large space the clog worked itself out.

I'm not so sure I want spaceports upgrading automatically although I'm not against the option. If the economy is balanced properly you would want make these decisions on your own.

I would prefer a way to predict trade traffic. I want to hit a button from the galaxy map that highlights each system with a colored circle that represents current and potential trade volume. From deep green, to green, green-yellow, all the way to red. Factors such as distance to and number of trading partners, abundance and rarity of resources etc.

If the economy is balanced tight enough, deciding which spaceports to upgrade should be integral to running an efficient empire.

The AI needs to recognize in advance the number of available docking bays vs inbound ships before flooding a system with ships.

Looking at your savegame taltamir, I believe this was actually caused by other problems that have been fixed in the final version of 1.0.4, so not strictly due to simply a high volume of freighters.

I should have clarified... If you enable shipbuild it WILL build spaceports and it WILL upgrade them automatically... however it does so sporadically and did not seem to consider the volume of traffic... I meant it should prioritize such cases when automation is on.

if you disable port building it shouldn't be automatic... but you should instead get a notification such that "there is a traffic jam in spaceport X, consider upgrading its docking bay capacity" Note, that in theory only 3 planets in every game could possible be that way, loros fruit, zentibian fluid, and korbebian spice. the three "super" trade goods that EVERY planet in the galaxy want and which DOUBLE tax revenue on every colony that gets them. you WANT that to go as smoothly as possible.
