air to ground attacks have already proved useless in the past and don´t do any different today when attacking troops in non-clear hexes... in my AI game I have heavily hit enemy ground unit stacks several times with hundreds of bombers and then took a look at them. Result wasn´t surprising to me, while not doing any damage (disabled or KIA) the units also didn´t show any disruption. You can whipe out units in clear hexes but if it´s rough, wooden, or jungle your attacks are 100% useless and the enemy doesn´t suffer any disruption. That´s wrong IMO, while not doing a lot of damage, at least disruption should go up. Not sky rocketing, but going up for sure... you only cause high disruption if you also cause a lot of casualties so you can be sure that you´ve not caused any disruption if you also don´t cause casualties, which makes this and the following attacks´ results pretty clear to me...

single squadron sweep number two, coming from the same base and now the news: I´ve spent political points to set them to the same HQ and the HQ is also in range... does this help? Of course not... I´ve also changed all the other US fighter squadrons in India to the same HQ (tenth airforce) and have 10th airforce HQs in range of their bases in future... lets see...

also the second sweep bounced the now bigger leaking Cap and shot them to pieces as the bounce, ahem, dive was exclusively on our side resulting in a 10:1 A2A for the Lightnings today...

sweep two... [8|]

looks like I´ve brought quite a lot of motorized support with me going over the Kokoda trail as there are 620 vehicles... [:D] I expected to see more Japanese units at Buna but the only major unit is the division that was kicked out of Port Moresby earlier. 4th div still shows up with over 300 assault points...

there you can see what nearly 160 bombers can do attacking twice in two days, the enemy is not disrupted at all and still gets his adjusted av doubled, while we get it halved to my surprise... fully supplied over the Kokoda trail I´ve expected to have a better adjusted av with two US divisions... seems like it will be a loooong and bloody fight, which is totally surprising as these two US divs took PM against a fully combat ready 4th div in two attacks easily... the fact that we didn´t even take a fort down is especially depressing, I´ve set three US combat engineer units to march towards Buna

10 Support troops lost from landing craft during unload of 12th Australian Bde /256

considering the fact that we only unload a bgd and a paratrooper unit I was first shocked to see 75 of my combat squads being disabled as I´ve thought the bgd would be completely shredded as it was "only" 60 prepped and the para unit was 100% prepped. At least that´s what I´ve thought, just to find out I´ve loaded the wrong para unit and that unit was 100% prepped, but for a DIFFERENT target. The unit prepped for Terapo was still sitting at Townsville. [:D] Mistake on my part, I guess I missed the right line in the unit load menu.

looks like the enemy has just the same coordination problems as we have as there were quite some messages about Zeroes missing their bombers...

31 x Ki-48-IIa Lily bombing from 11000 feet
Ground Attack: 4 x 100 kg GP Bomb

we´re sitting in a clear hex, so I don´t want to see massed IJA medium bombers as my flak is just pathetic and by far not what I have expected it to be. I´ve expected my flak to be so effective in this stack that attacking my units would become suicide quite quickly for the bombers... seems like all those 40mm Bofors can´t reach the bombers and only my 3.7inch flak fires... ceiling of the 40mm Bofors in real life was something about 20.000ft in real life, don´t know what it is in the game though, when I look at how many 40mm I´ve got there, I would guess it´s below 11.000ft. Wonder what the effective range was for the 40mm, below 11.000ft would seem a bit low to me though...

Airfield Attack: 8 x 500 lb GP Bomb
6 x B-24D Liberator bombing from 10000 feet
Airfield Attack: 10 x 500 lb GP Bomb

ordered all my bombers to attack the airfield instead of the ground units, target would be the supply dumps. The only hope I´ve got would be to see the enemy running out of supply but considering I haven´t spotted ships going to Buna for months I wonder how much supply is there anyway...

Rainer moved one unit of the Ex-Milne Bay defenders into the Kokoda trail path and the not really combat ready unit was dispatched easily... as we can´t bring down the level 4 forts at Buna with the combat eng of our two Inf divs I´ve decided to move four combat engineer units over the Kokoda trail... shouldn´t take us long then to take the base... another lesson learnt, always bring at least two combat eng units to the party if you expect to face something higher than level 1 forts... I thought after being forced to retreat from PM, the enemy division at Buna would not be a threat but it can hold easily against our two divisions... this unit had no chance against our two divs plus combat eng at PM though so this is quite amazing to me as there shouldn´t be a lot of supplies at Buna...

you just have to love the new artillery routine... advise: don´t bring any artillery, only uses up ship capacity and supplies... still better than the nuke artillery pre patch, unfortunetely there´s always this pendulum swinging from one side to the extreme other...

Rainer has noticed that I don´t have fighters left at Milne Bay as there´s no real need to have them there and they would only be picked off by Tojo sweeps against nearby dot bases. Seems like he also spotted some shipping and attacked the port but all bombs missed the ships and my flak was firing back, none of the damaged bombers crashed though... this raid came from Rabaul...

we tried to escort some divebombers but the altitude didn´t match... as those fighters are also flying Cap it´s quite hard to have them at the same altitude as the bombers and honestly, I don´t understand this "feature" anyway... if you can only set one altitude then this should be valid for Cap and if the rest is ordered to fly escort for some bombers than they should just do it at the altitude (or whatever higher) as the bombers... all this coordination thing in AE is off anyway as it fails most of the time and that sure wasn´t true in real life. Failing sometimes, failing often, failing how many times ever... but failing most of the time? [>:]

and stupid sweep six... [8|] six squadrons set to attack, six single squadron sweeps... haven´t been kamikaze sweeps as the enemy just didn´t put up enough of his fighters but tripple his fighters (not really a problem considering the low numbers in this turn) and the first two or three of those sweeps would have been once again single squadron kamikaze sweeps that probably would be bounced, ahem, dived on and shred to pieces...

we came away "ok" today, losing slightly less fighters than the enemy but it was nearly a 1:1 again... depressing if you think about more than a hundred fighters sent in with only small opposition... you just can´t use your numerical superiority when the routine is so stupid that each squadron goes in alone on and on and on and on... and yes, just for the sake of any complaints of me doing something wrong, even if I´m convinced that having the units assigned to the right HQ doesn´t help at all, I´ve all set them to the Tenth USAAF and this HQ is in range of all those squadrons... this is either just a borked routine not WAD or if it is WAD, it´s nothing but a ridicoulos design as noone can tell me that it wouldn´t be possible to see at least two squadrons fly together... no, it´s one by one by one by one... how stupid is this?

same as in the morning, the fighters fail to escort the divebombers due to different alt settings... wonder if this "failed" escort isn´t something bad anyway because that way you get a sweep against a TF, something that isn´t possible if you want to order it... and it obviously always goes in first, so in fact that´s better than having those fighters escort the bombers... lol...

here´s the first afternoon bomber strike and thank god the severe storms turned into moderate rain in the afternoon, enabling our bombers to perform better... four more 1000lb bomb hits but I´m not sure if two of those bombs really impress a Japanese DD... I thought two of those not that small bombs would be usually enough for a destroyer... Ariake should be finished though after taking a third hit...

Ariake was already lying dead in the water and takes another hit while Wakaba is reported heavily burning... perhaps this fast transport mission has cost the Japanese two DDs and if this goes on like this it will be the same as in real life, those fast transport missions will cost the enemy just too many destroyers while the missions themselve not really having a huge impact I guess as they carry just not enough supplies IMO... I wonder why my opponent isn´t using barges to supply all those front line bases around Buna and Lae... don´t know if the barges in AE are of good use though...

our adjusted av just looks awful and we have again not being able to reduce a fort which is our main problem... damn it, I should have ordered two combat engineer rgts to march together with my Inf divs... the enemy took more losses within his combat squads which is good news... it´s only a matter of time and I don´t know if I should attack again before my combat engineers arrive...

Lashio launched some Helens a couple of turns ago and I´ve though there would only be some bombers but my fault, I haven´t flown recon before this attack as I didn´t want to alert my opponent... unfortunetely for us, he already had fighters there... the Beaufighter sweep goes in and all of them are either damaged or shot down...

while we usually see single squadron sweeps one by one, we didn´t get a single squadron into the air, other than the Beaufighter squadron... this meant it became a kamikaze mission for our bombers... have lost several months of British bomber replacements today... the British bombers will be completely taken away from the frontlines, just as the Hurricanes as they can´t compete with Oscar II and do even worse against Tojos... bad news considering we have to rely on the Hurricane until late 43... they will only be used in our second line of defense if possible...

this bomber strike was completely mauled...

then the USAAF bombers show up, doing far better than the Brits... the 4Es are unbeatable and also the Mitchells performed very well against the enemy fighters... surprisingly well...

this is what I can rely on... the enemy would have to send up a huge number of fighters to be able to compete with 40+ B-17... wonder why I don´t see ongoing single bomber squadron attacks... seems to be a fighter squadron only "feature"...

this stupid routine is just making me sick... as mentioned before, all units are now even set to the same HQ which just doesn´t help at all... tried this hundreds of turns in my AI "test game" to no effect and only done it in the PBEM to take away this "advise" [;)]

this is the perfect example of the "stupid single squadron kamikaze routine"... the P-40 squadron is the first squadron to go in and is shot to pieces at a, hold your breath, 17:0 kill ratio... ah, who cares, those fighters were only piloted by 70 skilled USAAF pilots... perfect realistic and historical correct example once more... there´s only one reason for these stupid results and that´s the this screwed up coordination routine, which is not there to coordinate but it´s just a hardcoded feature that makes those strikes going in alone nearly all of the time, no matter what chicken bogey you do in front of the monitor...

it sucks and it is stupid... period... but hey, the designer wasn´t paid for it and I got a download for free, mind you...

I can only give the advise to everyone, wait for early 43, mass all your 4Es and do 4E attacks exclusively... don´t use your fighters at all, if needed then only to guard your 4E bases and hope your fighters don´t leak away in small numbers to be picked off...

that´s how the game works... the bombers (the heavy ones) always get through and you will inflict serious loss on the enemy... it´s better than using your own fighters offensively as this will just result in lots of your fighters being shot down... something that is valid for both sides of course... the fighter thing, not the heavy bomber thing... moved our Army North again, expect to meet the six enemy Inf divisions at Katherine again... expect my opponent to immedietely order a deliberate attack just as last time too and if our adjusted av is again divided by five he will again kick us out, doing this against massed artillery in open terrain and a couple of hundred tanks that would be able to shred the Japanese Inf divisions on their own, even though we´re only talking about 1942 tanks... in real life, the Japanese would not have a chance at all in this terrain against this type of Army against them... you can´t really improve this ground combat model though so no real complain here... my Army is totally supplied though and that´s something I can complain about I guess... it shouldn´t be possible to march such an Army overland from Alice Springs I guess and have it fully supplied... but as long as they stay out of bases, they get a full supply delivery every couple of days... just like my two Armies that are sitting in the Burmese jungle... and there we´re talking about 5000+ assault value plus support...

Hehe yea you were kinda asking for it.
A quick Q (as I am too lazy to read back); is it only your fighters that have problems flying together or your bombers as well?
I only ask because my fighters atm have too short legs to do any sweeps, and my bombers will usually fly together.

the bombers split up into up to something like 3-8 "strike packs" when I order around 150 of them to attack the same target. But differently to the fighters, the bombers usually launch a bigger strike first, followed by a couple of piecemeal strikes. But the different squadrons definetely join in together, while it´s obvious that my fighter squadrons do their sweeps one by one all the time. There were three Hurricane squadrons some months ago that once flew a sweep together though.

I´m still of the oppinion that the only thing that matters is experience. Nothing else (except altitude when ordering fighters to escort bombers - same altitude is preferred) seems to help. Not the airfield size, the HQ not at all, supplies, aviation support or all the other stuff that comes up as advices. Like I´ve said, a dev was so kind to look at a safe of mine some time ago and I was told I should change my squadrons to the right HQ. Didn´t do it in my PBEM but tested it in my AI test game with no result, at least no positive result. I´ve only done it in this PBEM now too because a) I had enough pps to be spent on such a thing and b) only did it because if I wouldn´t I would be told that´s the problem and it´s no wonder they don´t fly together because I´m doing it wrong - as I´m a bad player afterall. [:D] Got all those fighter squadrons set to the 10th USAAF with this HQ in range and also another USAAF HQ in range that I´ve also changed over to the 10th USAAF. So in fact I´ve got two (correct) HQs in range, but this hasn´t changed anything.

Only thing that helped so far is experience but you will never get your fighters exp up when they launch one time and lose 17 out of 25 P-40 in one sweep against three dozen Tojos. I can only train them up to 70 skill but exp is frozen somewhere around 50 at best. So if you order 5 USAAF fighter squadrons to attack the same target you have 125 fighters in the best case, but the numerical superiority doesn´t help you at all when they go in one by one, means 25 fighters over the target each time, facing all of the available Cap, for example 50 enemy fighters. This then means, even though you outnumber your opponent by 2.5:1 you can´t project your numerical superiority over the target because you are the one who starts with a 1:2 disadvantage for your first squadron to go in. That´s why I then usually see the first two squadrons being completely shred while doing no or not much damage in return. Then the defender loses more and more fighters due to running out of ammo, fuel, or due to some defects and when squadron four and five show up, there´s usually nothing left of the enemy. Not because they were shot down, but because they´ve shred my first two squadrons and run out of ammo for example. This then ends in very comfortable kill rates for the one who welcomes these single squadron sweeps when he´s able to bring up some fighters.

And to me it´s hard to understand that two or three WWII fighter squadrons wouldn´t be able to fly 90 or 135 miles together to the ordered target. Again, I´m not talking about 1000 bomber strikes against targets 800 miles away. The way the air routine works at the moment isn´t totally off. It works if there are 10-20 ac on one side meet 10-20 on the other side. It´s the problem when you get 5x25 ac going in one by one against 50-60 enemy ac for example. Then you get those loopsided results with kill rates up to 17:0 when I look at my P-40 squadron (skill 70) vs Tojos and Oscar IIs.

But hey, perhaps it´s only me and I´m really doing something wrong. It´s definetely not something that I know of and it never came up in any of those advices on the forum. Unfortunetely there aren´t really a lot players actually constantly posting their complete combat reports, it would be easy to check.

follow on kamikaze squadron... 16 Airacobras lost for 1 Oscar... the first two squadrons lose 35:4 against Tojos and Oscar II... two reasons: going in alone, being endlessly dived on due to not having enough aircraft in the strike... I stand by what I´ve said a hundred times already: this is just plain stupid and the "uncoordination" is the major problem of the airroutine, leading to totally off results on a daily basis... AE produces more loops than WITP and that´s a fact for sure...

when the enemy has run out of ammo due to taking down 35 of our fighters for nearly no losses we get numerical superiority, leading to the dive being on our side for nearly the whole turn... which results in a loop for the other side... this squadron (being equal to all other frontline squadrons, having 70 airskill) achieves something like a 9 or 10:1... three engagements, three loops... 19:3, 16:1 and then 1:9... must be very reasonable results for WWII engagements... PROBLEM: single squadron sweeps... I bet neither the first two loops, nor the last one would happen if we would first see something like 60 vs 50 fighters followed by 40 vs 20 fighters if there would still be something in the air after the first round... but with the given, hardcoded strike pack feature you just get ongoing, ridicoulos results... sorry, but these are exactly those loops we were bitching about in WITP when they happened "now and then" but here I can repeat them daily... every sweep I order sees each squadron going in one by one... no matter what settings... doesn´t work...

our ASW TF reacted to the damaged RO-63 (reaction for ASW TFs works very well as they seem to react 100% of the time to spotted subs) but only Express tried to engage the sub which got away unspotted... is there a difference between a damaged or an undamaged sub?

Zeroes from the big aerodrome at Rangoon can´t fly escort for the bombers from Rangoon, but Tojos from a jungle base near Mandalay that is closer to the target meet the bombers for escort duty...

coordination routine, it´s a joke... not one Zero was able to escort the bombers, not one... it works for both sides, no, better say it doesn´t work for both sides...

no Zeroes but this time Oscars coming from the North... the bombers are coming from the South!!! How big is the chance to see bombers from a base 700 miles away launching their fighters to escort bombers that are coming from a different location and fighters from the same base as the bombers failing to escort them again and again and again? Noone, not even the the air team lead can seriously think this is how it worked RL... but I´m sure there would be some kind of fantasy explanation and if that doesn´t help someone would say: leave him alone, he wasn´t even paid for... I expect the enemy to sit behind level 4-6 forts so I doubt that we will be ever be able to break through here... we´re probably shred to pieces when we´re going to attack in 10-14 days... I´m waiting for another unit to show up here and also want to have level 2 forts for most of my units as I fear a counterattack that could throw us back... we´re in full supply though...

thought the ship loss list would be interesting. I doubt that the IJN has lost a CV, we´ve hit Soryu and Hiryu with one torp each but I´m sure none went down from just one hit so this is FOW. BB Ise was heavily hit at Adak (where we lost a BB) and I had hopes she would be sunk too but has been just recently reported as being still afloat so it´s only BB Hyuga that has been sunk so far. The CA and CL losses should be correct and the DD losses should be pretty close too. So except the fact that we´ve lost one BB more we´re doing pretty good in shipping losses I think. Mind you, not one BB was lost at Pearl Harbour even though damage looked horrible after the first turn. I also doubt that I´ve really sunk 16 enemy SS, I guess it´s more like a dozen. We´ve lost 7 subs while only three of them were lost to enemy depth charges which pretty much proves that the enemy ASW is more or less useless when it comes to actually sinking our subs. Keeping them from attacking yes, sometimes they get some damaging hits but sinking our subs is pretty much an impossible job. Wonder if that will change later on with better IJN ASW platforms.

the bombers were coming from Cairns while the escorts were coming from Horn Island... interesting coordination given the fact I´m not able to get two fighter squadrons from the same base fly a sweep together...

guess I´ve found out how to use my medium bombers for naval attacks... needless to say that I was more than surprised to see 6 bombers scoring four hits considering the averag lownav skill is in the mid 20s... I don´t want to imagine what will happen when I can employ 70 lownav skilled pilots for all my medium bomber squadrons as this is what I´m planning to do. So far it was like having 70 air for fighter pilots and 70 navbomb for bomber pilots but due to having dropped something like 1800 x 500lb bombs from 6000ft against cruisers and merchants for not a single hit I had to change the training to lownav and that´s the only skill we´re going to train bomber pilots. Groundbombing is something that can be easily learnt by doing anyway so no need to train it. In 2 months at the latest I will have the first 100-150 pilots coming from my onmap training squadrons with lownav skill 70 and I´m going to start equipping my frontline squadrons with them. The limited numbers of Marauders (guess I´ve got some 80 left) together with a growing number of Mitchells should form a formidable anti shipping weapon, not to forget the Marine divebomber squadrons (and one Banshee squadron). After this attack I got quite confident to be honest...

I've been training in low level naval bombing for medium bombers and fighter-bombers for as soon as I had them around to train. My plan is to use heavies primarily as basebusters and mediums primarily as anti shipping bombers.

I have many B25 and B26 squadrons with low level naval bombing averages around 65+, and the Beau squadrons have strafing and low level bombing both at around 65+ as well. I'm waiting to see what's gonna happen when these babies find some soft skinned targets to strafe and skip bomb. [:)]

our game is ahead of the AAR and there were some more B-26 anti shipping missions and they did very, very well. And this with their extremely low skill which is quite amazing and I wonder if it´s wad. Unfortunetely I made the mistake of having all my bomber training squadrons doing navbomb training from day one of the war just too find out in mid/late 42 that medium bombers can´t hit anything from 6000ft even when they´re flown by 70 skilled crews. Like I´ve said, my medium bombers (6000ft) and my heavy bombers (10000ft) dropped something like 1800 x 500lb bombs for not even a single hit which I found pretty much off considering their navbomb skill between 65 and 70.

I´m now planning to use my bombers the same way you do. One interesting aspect now also is the replacement rate of 18 Australian Beauforts equipped with torps. Those will be very welcome too. [:)]
