Supply units

Post by baltjes »

While working on a (huge) scenario on Stalingrad, I am encountering the problem of declining supply for the German 6th Army. The OOB-editor mentions the availability of (amongst others) a fixed supply dump, a fixed fuel dump each with strength 6 and a large army supply with strength 12. In Arkady's unit viewer I read that a fixed supply dump enables on-map supply to units at the Corps level.

What does that mean?

1. Does it mean that a Corps wich has a Supply Dump attached, has 100% supply irrespective the number of Divisions within that Corps and irrespective the level of supply (to be) set in the scenario-editor (0 - 100%)?

2.If so, does it mean that a reduced strength of the supply dump (say strength 3) has a reduced supply level (say 50% respectively)?

3. Does a large Army supply provide supply for a total Army equally as a fixed supply dump does for a Corps?

If this would all be the case, then I could for operation 'URANUS'

- set the supply level for the Germans at about 10%

- put a large Army supply (or a supply dump for each Corps)at Pitomnik airfield (with strength 6, since Herr Göring did not keep his promisses) (supply dumps with strength 3)

- put a large Army supply (or a supply dump for each corps)at Goemrak airfiled (with strength 3 since the airfield is smaller and the situation is worsening for the Germans)(supply dumps with strength 1)

When Iwan is able to take those airfields, the germans will surely be in big trouble.

I am anxious to know if anyone of you has any experience with these types of supply units and I am lookoing forward to your reply.

Hi Hajo,

I'll take a Stab. at your questions.....(get it, Stab.?)[8D]

The only thing that I know of that identifies a HQ is the fact that the unit must be in the 300 block of the platoon numbers.

So, a regular German Korps HQ's number is P01306....in East Front.

Now I thought that what makes for example a Battalion HQ unique from a Korps HQ was the number of strength points. All Battalion HQs have 2SPs versus 5SPs for Korps HQs. However this doesn't gel because these supply dumps have 6 SPs which should be the equivalent of an Army HQ.

In any case I very much doubt these dumps have any special abilities beyond regular HQ supply duties.
I think they are more for graphical representation of a strategic asset.

Thanks for your reply, Juggalo.

I fear that you are right; those dump-units are - unfortunately - 'just for fun'. The way I thought to use them would be only valid in a scenario that went from the start of operation Uranus in november 1942 through the very end of the destruction of the German 6th Army in februari 1943. You probably know me as an adherent of L O N G scenario's, but thát long....? It is probably better to restrict to 'Uranus' itself; the encirclement of the 6th Army, running from mid November till mid December. (Can't remember the exact data by head; something of 19th Nov. till 9th Dec or so.) That should be long enough! The supply situation for the Germans was at that time not too bad anyway. It became worsening after the ring was closed. Possibilities for another new scenario: Operation 'Ring' (half Dec 1942 till end Jan. 1943)......!? Time will see.

Anyway, thanks

The two Fixed Supply Depots, fuel and supply, are high victory point locations (54VP) that serve no purpose except to provide Victory Point locations without having to put a victory point locations on the map. Supply Rail Cars are the same idea (120VP).

The Large Army Supply and Mobile Supply units do have supply capabilities and are also high victory point units. (108VP & 60VP)
