Leave it to you to come up with that one[X(] I swear ABJ my first three attacking rolls in the wif computer game was a die of 1 and 1 and egads another 1 needless to say my mighty Wermacht lost 6 very valuable units it so deflated me I went back to my online Cod2 game and got crushed by 10 yr olds. I am tired of getting whomped. Taking up Bridge.

Be sure and play Duplicate -- at least then when trumps break 5-0 or all 3 finesses are off, everyone else has to deal with it too!

Bridge is the best wargame going .. Where else can you find a tournament every weekend?

If any one has the cwif computer game and understands it [cause i dont] please email me on how to invade. I tried landing Japanes marines but it keeps saying you cant land in this hex and I tried every hex in the sea area and I did declare war against Russia before I tried to land.

I don't have CWIF, but from WIF:

Have you checked the weather? At least in snow and blizzard you cannot invade. Or in mountain if there is no city (if I recall well).

Jose: you can invade into any terrain.

However, it is correct that one cannot invade in storm, snow, or blizzard weather.

Edit: Correction of typo.

Are you in the Invasion phase of the impulse? If you try to invade during any other phase of the game (e.g., land movement, unload transports) you will not be permitted to invade.

Steve I finally saw the popup for invasion and I let myself land, WHY because I am playing myself [:D] Question can you only invade from amphibus craft or from transports too? In other words does the invasion popup only come up when you have landing craft loaded with troops in a sea area of a nation you are at war with.

Bo, you should really read the manual for CWIF or WIF if there is no CWIF manual. I don't mind answering at all (and besides you are not asking me but Steve), but all these are very simple and basic things in the game. If you are asking these things you have a looooooong way to learn.

You can invade with amphibious troops from any troop transport (except Queen Mary/Queen Elisabeth if selected this option), and you can invade with any unit without motor (I have some doubts about cavalry) from an amphibious ship.

You can also invade from a cruiser if the unit is a plain (no motorized) infantry division or the same class (in this case I am almost positive no cavalry admitted for this),

Keep in mind that for all the above units they all halve their attack ratio except for the marines and other amph units, and that the bad climate gives a great advantage to defenders specially when unsing the defense notional unit.

Bo,

Hang in there.  As with anything there is a learning curve.  Very few folks got this game on its first play out of the box.  We played it and reviewed the rules over and over until it all became second nature.  Keep pluggin away.

Here are a couple of sections from MWIF's Players Manual. They cross reference other sections (sorry about that) but the only important reference is to RAC 11.14. That section is virtually identical to RAW 11.14.

You will notice references to the Selectable Units form. This is something I added to MWIF (CWIF does not have it). What the Selectable Units form does is list all the units that are capable of moving in a phase where very few units are able to move (e.g., reorganization phases, HQ support, air mission subphases, etc.).
===
7.3.15 Unload Land Units (RAC 11.13)

During the unload land units phase, players on the phasing side that did not choose a Pass or Air action may debark land units that are at sea (i.e., being transported by naval units) into friendly controlled coastal hexes. Each unit that debarks counts as a land move, though the unit stops immediately in the coastal hex and can move no farther.

Land units which are eligible to move in this phase are displayed in the Selectable Units form (see section 8.7.2.49 for details). This phase is done once all major powers on the phasing side have clicked on the End of Phase button in the main form.

7.3.16 Invasion (RAC 11.14)

During the invasion phase, players on the phasing side that chose a Land or Combined action may invade enemy controlled hexes using land units that are at sea (i.e., being transported by naval units). Each land unit that invades counts as a land move. In addition, invading a hex means that the invading major power must conduct a land attack on the hex, which may also be limited in number. See section 7.3.18 for more about land combat declaration. For advice from experienced players on land combat, see section 3.4.8.

Land units which are eligible to invade in this phase are displayed in the Selectable Units form (see section 8.7.2.49 for details). There are many detailed rules concerning invasions. See RAC 11.14 for a complete explanation. This phase is done once all major powers on the phasing side have clicked on the End of Phase button in the main form.

Last time I played (the tabletop version many years ago), there was an optional rule that allowed LS (light ships as opposed to heavy ships) to carry divisions... or something like that.

I am sure it has changed since the release of Ships in Flames, but the operative point is that it will likely be an optional rule of some sort.

How are you getting along in learning the mechanics of WiF?

Appreciate you asking Samurai, slow going but anyone who has a spattering knowledge of the game and would like to learn more about the game the $15 I paid for the game is well worth it at least to me. I am so impressed as to how you players played this game on a dining room table. The cwif game looks well done to me and I am curious as to why more people dont have the game, the rules might not be up to snuff but so what, its very playable even if there is no AI, I know Steve will have diagrams [for a better word] of how to play such as naval moves air moves etc. I do very well in Barbarossa land moves air moves etc, attacking odds defence odds etc. but Guadacanal thats another story different sea zones, sea zone boxes[ugh] invasions etc. taking a little longer Sam.

Well, when we played it on the dining room table, we spent enough time arguing over the rules that we started a tradition. Each game we would swap sides (axis & allies) and we would guarantee to play with the same rules interpretations for 2 games in a row to make it fair. Then the winner was determined by cumulative points on both games.

It never mattered. Until the last game I played, I always lost.

Also, we played this in conjunction with Days Of Decision. This allowed you to start the game in 1936 and 'play politics' leading into the war. This was interesting in that you suddenly did not have so many units on the map. Production multiples were lower so you didn't have to maximize your transport networks early.

This caused all kinds of mayhem that allowed us to screw the rules up something fierce, but it also kept some of the games short and fun. The drill was Play a game - reread the rules - Play another. We simply didn't care if the game didn't get far before someone surrendered. A surrender was a loss just as if you had fought to 1945. We enjoyed playing.

Also with the tabletop version, we played together so when there was confusion, there was probably a difference of opinion as well. This (along with our competitive nature) helped us muster the effort to dig into the rules. Neither of us wanted to be wrong. [:-]

As for why it did not sell well, I have my opinions...

First it was only released after work on this version was well along the way. Second, it has no AI. Those who are active players have already migrated to using Vassal or Cyberboard and were comfortable with that system.

I do agree with you that it is likely a wonderful tool for learning the game.

There is an optional rule for placing divisions aboard surface combat ships (SCS). If you are not using divisions or that optional rule, only transport and AMPH can carry infantry that can invade. If you are not using the AMPH optional rule, all those units are the same as naval transports.

Lol, there was no way we were ever going to be able to put the game on the "dining room" table - most of our games ran 8 to 9 months.

I had made a really cool double section reinforced thick 5' x 8' plywood smooth finish for the playing side table for some of our large tabletop miniatures gaming. That allowed me to use one of the sections, 5' x 4', set up on portable sawhorses, with the maps firmly clipped to the plywood surfaces.

I put that up in the corner of my home office, and we tried to play at least once every weekend if we could. Many of our gaming sessions would be all nighters and we would break as the sun was coming up and the sleepiness started taking over. I always made sure to have plenty of food on hand so we could all break at the same time for our evening repast.

One of the biggest difficulties I had with such a lengthy play session was that after a few months, I had to go in with dental precision to get the inevitable dust off the map and counters without messing anything up. It was indeed a challenge, but we were all so happy to see the counters shine again.

Another problem we had was lighting, I had to resort to halogen lamps to generate enough lumens so we could all see the numbers on the counters - the CW blue was always a problem. We also always had at least 2 players who volunteered to "clean up" the counter stacks for those players who didn't have even enough deft dexterity to change most light bulbs without breaking 1 or 2 first lol. Yes, all thumb players in WiF can sometimes be a problem, "Now just exactly which hex is the chaotic pile of stuff supposed to be in anyway?"...

Still another difficulty was dice rolls. Some of us were really good at rolling 6's (yes, we were still using the 6 sided die). A six-sided die has a more natural tendency to land with the 6 side on top because there are 6 pip holes in that side as opposed to 1 pip hole on the opposite side, thus making it less dense. Our solution was to use 2 sets of 2 packs of playing cards that worked quite well. We thought of using the computer to generate random numbers until a programmer friend of ours demonstrated to us how computers (at least then) don't really generate random numbers...

We too had our disagreements over rules. We discussed and debated until we could come to some sort of an agreement. Then, I would send the question to ADG and was almost always pleased with the reply as it was usually what I had understood it to mean, yay!

Believe it or not, rules questions were not our biggest fear. Our biggest fear was forgetting this or that optional rule that we were supposed to be using, and realizing it several turns later. We did, on numerous occasions, back the game up a few turns, or start over, in the case of rules omissions. That is why MWiF is going to be such a help in this area!

I like CWIF, but I have never been able to finish a game with it without it bugging out at some stupid point. Most often it would almost always crash with Vichy, so I sometimes would just defeat France instead of risking a crash. So, I am glad to see you are able to play it in a relatively stable manner. [:)]

When you invade say Normandy or marines invading a Pacific isle, what offense is the best naval or combination? And why? A detailed explanation please.
