I´ve feared this to happen. The defeated IJA Army that was holding Shwebo and got kicked out by my "Northern Burma Army" reached Pegu yesterday and all of the enemy units here attacked today. I had hopes that Rainer wouldn´t attack but when thinking about how much av he could mass here I was sure he would. With 3000 av I would have expected to see a shock attack but luckily for us it was only a deliberate attack and both our adjusted av looked horrible while the IJA´s was even worse... my troops aren´t prepped for Pegu at all as I expect the enemy to fully abandon it as it´s also a clear hex and we can mass 5000+ av here soon. Hopefully the enemy lost more combat ability than we did, the losses in vehicles and support looked horrible though and they once again don´t match the "casualties" at all so I can´t say much about the real losses without counting up each and every squad in the units every day and it´s depressing that the combat report doesn´t tell you anything anymore with that kind of FOW... [:(] It will take at least another four or five days to have my armored spearhead arrive that is coming from the North which will give me another 500 av but even more important a lot of fire power as we´re talking about tanks here. The bulk of the Northern Burma Army will arrive within the next two weeks.

Olsen, E. decides to submerge SS Grayling due to damage

I never liked it when my subs attack on the surface as this most of the times is just bad news for the subs... same is true here, after the escort of this freighter being sunk yesterday Grayling decided that it would be a good idea to attack with her 3 inch, totally useless, deck gun... five hits later, the freighter thought it would be worth firing back and put a shell into Grayling that causes enough damage that the sub has to retire... [8|] well done... the freighter seems to suffer no real damage...

oh how do I love the leaking Cap feature even when you order the fighters to LRCAP a different hex... must be the case of being a bad player and not being a bad design again... unfortunetely there is no way to stop fighters ignoring orders in this game... that way we lose 8 Airacobras for not a single enemy fighter downed... hey, I really like the airroutines... [8|] especially because of the ongoing really realistic kill rates...

Gasmata is trashed again... one of the main disadvantages of the Japanese is the lack of a lot good engineering units which makes it pretty hard to have a net of functioning airbases near the front that can be kept open... at the moment, there´s only Rabaul (with hundreds of fighters) and Munda (with 50-75 fighters) operational in this area... all other bases can be suppressed at will with our heavy bomber force... can´t wait for 2/43 to get 48 Army Liberators and another 16 Navy Liberators (of which I can´t make use until mid 43 due to the lack of USN squadrons to put them in... were they produced to be kept in stock in real life?[&:])

I will upgrade all my B-17 in India/Burma to B-24 in early 43 and use the B-17 in New Guinea again because I need the longer B-24 range to effectively attack targets deep into Thailand to force my opponent to further thin out the frontlines of fighters... a dozen OscarII wouldn´t be really a threat for our bombers I´ve thought but in the end we lose two of the bombers... range is really a factor here...

leaking Cap and Rainer knows anyway that my P-40 can only reach 29.000ft... with the screwed air routine that makes altitude the most important factor of all things in air combat, we will see a substantial change in 43 when all our fighters will reach higher than the Japanese fighters... until then, there´s no Army fighter (except the P-38) that can go high enough to be a threat for the Japanese... funny when you think about the war in real life and how it turns out in AE... rubbish [:(] a crappy aircraft trumps a top notch one as long as it can go 10ft higher than the first line fighter... add in a good man rating and you will see the standard: x dives on... x fires from behind... so the best advice for the Japanese IMO is to focus on those fighters that can go the highest possible and have a good man rating (while every Japanese fighter has a better man rating than the Allied anyway I would focus on altitude)... funny, we´re talking about the war in the PACIFIC!

as usual here too... even if you may think a single or a couple fighters lost A2A daily wouldn´t really matter, well they do matter as you can easily lose more than the replacement rates are in a month... easily, it only depends on how many fighters are sent out as leaking Cap all the time to be killed for sure... both my opponent and me have completely focussed on high altitude and only taking on leaking Cap... speaks for it´s own I guess, but hey, we´re both bad players of course...

in this case I attacked Pegu directly as I hoped (how stupied can I be with a year´s AE experience? [8|]) that perhaps my two Lightning squadrons would sweep together... of course they don´t, this is working as it was (stupidly) designed... while our Lightnings completely shred the enemy during a long period of our fighters diving the enemy ones, with that number of enemy fighters in the air, the dive finally was over and then the Lightnings were shredded by the diving enemy fighters... halve a dozen P-38 were lost for for more than twice the number of enemy fighters... at least not a loop and looking at the numbers that´s an ok result for me... during the dive the kill rate was something like 10:0 for the Lightnings...

sweep one... [8|]

and here´s the rest of the two Lightning squadrons... as if the game is hardcoded to piss you off, the two fragments are now flying together... it´s so stupid, it just hurts... 1:1 in numbers, alt advantage, dive, the enemy had no chance...

in the end we claim something like two dozen enemy fighters today but we´ve lost 6 valuable Lightnings... 4:1 kill rate is in the "ok-range" I guess but fact is that with the Japanese production numbers of Tojos alone, we´re pretty much on the losing end as all our low altitude fighters get eaten alive and are therefore more or less useless and the Lightnings would have to achieve one loop after another to make up for the Japanese production of aircraft and pilots... with the conservative way of fighting of the Allied so far we´re still ahead by 300+ aircraft in aircraft killed though...

Pogy is on transit to her patrol area and meets a brand new Japanese carrier South of Tokyo... the sub attacks and scores an exploding hit and a dud... now that was nice, while not a war winner with the carrier not in danger of sinking that close of a major repair shipyard... nevertheless a nice little morale boost... lol, I´m reall stupid... 300 fighters at Port Moresby and Terapo have been set on LRCAP the potential targets for the Zeroes to pick off leaking Cap... why I still try the myth of "layered Cap" is beyond me anyway but hey ho... the Zeroes are outnumbered 3:1 but come in higher than all my US fighters, only the newly arrived Aussie Spitfire unit can go higher than the historically well know high altitude fighter called Zero Sen... the result is the usual dive fire from behind insanity, resulting in no less than 9 of our fighters downed for 1 Zero shot down A2A and another one probably lost to ops from being damaged... the numerical superiority didn´t help us at all, the dive for the Zeroes never stopped until the Spitfires got their dive and downed a single Zero but at that stage there were nearly no Zeroes left due to them having used up all their ammo and fuel... nice little engagement... change the ceiling of the involved fighters with the editor and I bet that if the Allied fighters would be able to go higher than the Zero the kill rate would be 100% reverted... if that doesn´t clearly show the flaw of this design then I don´t know what... it was a pity that altitude wasn´t a factor at all in WITP but funnily enough, not having an altitude factor is better than having a ridicoulos one... the airwar in the Pacific wasn´t fought at the fighters´ ceilings and if so, then the Japanese would by far have done differently with their paper fighters early on...

the first Zero sweep of course wasn´t it, a fragment shows up a bit later... results were the same of course, being higher up, the two Zeroes shot down two of our fighters while being outnumbered 20:1 ... would you post that on the main forum, the first answer you would get would be that the two fighters shot down were surprised by the enemy being up high and then the two Zeroes would have used their speed advantage from the dive to flee... no problem with that, happened often enough in real life probably... but yeah and that´s happening all the time here... lol... let alone that all Allied fighters here would be faster and aren´t really flying that low either... speed? forget about it (just look at the Oscar)... firepower? nice to carry a lot guns but that won´t help you if you don´t get a shot at your enemy... armor and durability? nice too, you only lose halve of your aircraft from being constantly shot at... ability to imitate a Satelite? that´s what you want to have, the higher you can go, the better... maneuverability? added in with the dive that you automatically get in 95% of the cases when you fly higher then the enemy this will give you more shots from behind than low man rating fighters get because the game seem to assume that in a dive á la zoom and boom you´re curving around like an autoscooter...[>:] when I look at Allied fighters with a usual high alt man rating than Japanese fighters then the Allied fighters get around halve the shots from behind when diving on the enemy than vice versa. I can only explain this with the man rating as the speed can´t be the factor with the Allied fighters being far faster compared to Oscar and Zero... pilot quality being equal of course... it can of course (and that´s the probable reason) be seen the other way around, that the more maneuverable aircraft would be able to turn away from a diving enemy... still, if one fighter is more maneuverable and can go higher than the other then this is a more or less unbeatable combo as long as you actually order your fighters to go higher than the enemy...

and as long as you stay above 40mm Bofors range you don´t have to fear a dozen Allied AA units... while the damaged numbers look horrible first, the losses aren´t at all... two bombers lost, one to flak, one to ops... and probably 75% being repaired in one turn with their service rating...

I would say that this is actually in your favour. Sure, his risk of losses is minimal, but it is there, and the casualties he inflicts is hardly worth the valuable fuel he spends on doing so imo.
Have you considered moving in one or two amc's and lay some mines as a present for him?

got no mine layers in the area and moving them to a hex just two hexes off a major Japanese airbase that I can´t touch at all (Moulmein) is probably more risk for me than for the enemy [:D]

Moulmein got something like 100-125 fighters and a big number of bombers. And so far our shipping around Diamond Harbour has often been spotted by Nells so moving any ship to the Rangoon area is a nogo at the moment. And I don´t need to, supply is flowing from Akyab into Burma just "perfectly". It shouldn´t though...

Ah, but there is an easy fix to place mines in areas close to the enemy. They are called subs [;)]

mostly single going PBs or AKLs around in the Solomons... should be enough to keep the garrissons supplied though, Munda, Lunga and Shortlands all have reported 20-25000 troops... haven´t spotted any other bases there being built up...

like I´m always saying, all those "issues" usually work for both sides, no matter if it´s the supply routine, the air routine, the artillery routine and of course also the "if you get a 9/10 detection level you nuke the base bombardment routine"... at the moment I only get 16 B-24 a month and therefore I could not afford to attack Munda with my heavies only as I spotted just too many fighters there. In the past there were also a good number of Tojos which obviously aren´t there anymore... we destroy a lot of Zeroes and Betties though, considering the Zeroes not being really bomber killers a coordinated B-24 would probably have done the job too but that way it is definetely less costly and way more effective... I was more or less sure that one cruiser TF would be easily enough to 100% knock out the base but...

what can I say? The usual stupidity... the P-40 were set to LRCAP the hex nearby but nearly the whole unit flew into the other hex to be butchered by the Tojos that fly 1000 ft higher and get the never ending bounce... kill rate is the usual loop with 12 Warhawks lost for not even a single Tojo... the Warhawks did not even get a single shot at the enemy, let alone thinking about taking one down... skill 70 pilots as usual (got another 1200 in reserve)... if that airroutine isn´t off then I don´t know what... but hey, like mentioned above, the "fly higher than the enemy to get a loop" works for both sides just everything else that is out of whack... the Japanese get their high altitude dogfighters for the first 20 months and the Allied for the rest of the war...

nothing left, all 15 Warhawks were either shot down or damaged by the 22 Tojos... while things like this were the exception in real life, they happen just daily in AE if you are foolish enough to actually put up your aircraft... AE tonwed down things? Yeah, the Allied replacement rates were toned down (admit that they were adjusted to more historical accurate numbers) so of course in the end there will be less losses... but when looking at one engagement after another, the results are just far more off than those from WITP when you at least did get somewhat reasonable results if you could field equally skilled pilots... not so in AE, all that counts is the at least 10ft height advantage which is enough to get you the never ending dive phase if the numbers for both sides are ok...

but that´s not it yet, after the Tojo sweep the bombers are coming in and my stupid squadrons of LRCAP the hex next to this one "leak" of course again and that results in more losses to our fighters of course... due to us being higher than the enemy fighters though we got the bounce and it looked promising first, the downside was that after two or three passes, the dive was over and switched to the all beating Tojos again, taking down another four or five of our fighters for one Tojo A2A... if the Corsair will be just halve as good as the Tojo then I will be glad and due to the fact that the Corsair can go slightly higher than the Tojo I expect it to kill the Tojo en masse (just like the Lightning) as long as we can take on "small" numbers of enemy aircraft with our single fighter squadron sweeps, best would be around a dozen enemies in the air as this gives you the never ending dive for sure when you come in higher and outnumber the enemy 2:1...

Manus was (besides Rabaul which I can´t touch) the staging base for the ongoing Zero sweeps against our 1-3 leaking Cap from PM so I decided that it´s time to close it... means in future the Zeroes will launch from Rabaul and due to the fact that the Zero can go higher than all my USAAF fighters (except the Lightning) we will keep losing fighters without doing any damage... 12/42 is no different than 12/41 and the fact that my pilots are all skill 70 doesn´t help you at all when the enemy can fly higher than you can...

level 2 airfield should be seriously damaged now and hopefully won´t have a lot of engineers there to repair it... with Munda being knocked out, Shortlands and Lunga being suppressed by 4Es there is only Rabaul left that could launch substantial Japanese air strikes (level 6 airfield) in this area... mostly fighters there, some 60 bombers reported, probably a Helen sentai and a Betty daitai... this should give us more or less operational freedom if we can keep the bases in the Solomons suppressed, the bases on New Guinea that are "nearby" have been suppressed for months already and that won´t change I guess...

and that´s it for the day...

the nuke naval bombardment was a "success", otherwise we were on the receiving end as usual due to the fact that ordering a target for LRCAP doesn´t mean anything in AE and your fighters just leak whereever they want to and the fact that the enemy fighters are just flying higher than ours... resulted in a pretty depressing A2A result again... knocking out Munda was an important result though...

first time our flak shows some teeth... considering that most of India´s heavy flak was moved into this hex all I can say about Allied land based flak is that it´s totally pathetic... and as long as the enemy stays above 9000ft, he will only be shot at by heavy calibres... flak is a non issue for the Japanese when attacking a base, 10000 or 11000ft works just as fine as 6000ft but you´re pretty save... even worse for the Japanese, they don´t have anything that I would call land based flak so far...

now that would be a perfectly coordinated strike then... 45 out of 45 ready bombers launched and arrived together over the target... first time in this campaign probably... note that we torched a Tony on the ground, seems like Rainer isn´t only focussing on the Tojo, wonder if that´s going to be a fault or not... nice hit rate but a too big airfield to be knocked out and there are also some 35.000 reported troops at Bangkok...

after all the enemy units moved out we take an empty Pegu... I expect most of the enemy troops holding their position East of Pegu sitting in their jungle hex behind the river... with some 2-3000av it would be quite bloody to cross the river and I don´t know what to really do yet... goal of my offensive was to take all bases down to Rangoon to have supplies flowing to China and that´s what we´ve accomplished already... as a bonus we pretty much shred a couple of enemy divisions at Shwebo at the beginning of the offensive, so I will now regroup and build up some bases to have potential bomber bases for deep strikes... we can´t really use any of our bases in enemy Tojo range though as our fighters would just be killed at a ridicoulos rate I guess... I´m tempted to try out my Hurricanes once, perhaps Rainer comes in at the lately 30.000 ft standard attack height and my Hurricanes could dive on the enemy then if set to their ceiling... I guess it would go the other way though, the Tojos coming in at their ceiling, diving on the Hurricanes and slaughtering them... there´s no no need to defend our bases anyway so really taking on the enemy fighters is senseless... there´s no competetive British fighter until late 43, early 44... until then we will have to fight with obsolete Hurricane IIa, IIb and mostly IIc... none of those can nearly compete with the Tojo if employed rightly...

Well, I feel your pain. The uber tojo and high altitude sweep has completly altered my perception of the air war and the tactics I use. For now, it is massed heavy bombers go in first. I never use mediums anywhere where I suspect tojos are in number and my opponent has about a million of them and I just don't even try to fight tojos with P40s. I suppose a good house rule helps but my opponent does not feel it is necessary. Once I get the P47, he is going to see nothing by max altitude sweeps for the rest of the war.

It is 11/42 in my game and I don't think I have seen "one" coordinated air attack. No matter how I try it. I really like uncoordinated attacks and think that is should be a regular feature in the game-especially in poor weather conditions. But not all the time. Not in clear weather with short ranged, well led attacks. Even a blind squirrel should find a nut now and then.....

What really amazes me is that so many players just accept the problems or sluff it off as no big deal.

In the end, most Allied players will win so who cares, right? Well, I care because it just don't feel right....

I totally agree but have given up to really bitch about the air routine on the main forum because the devs weren´t paid so it has to be a good routine (this seems to have been the standard argument), even though every sane man here that has read the standard books knows that how the airwar turns out in in AE is so off that it is a step back from WITP compared to real life. Or how do you explain the ongoing fights at the fighters ceiling with the one usually winning that can go 10 ft higher than the other? Like the one beta tester told me, the longer you will play, the more chrome will fall off the air routines and the more you will find out that this is the part of the game that needs the most tweaking.

the usual fast transport going to or coming from Truk... as we´ve seen these fast transport missions daily this is pretty much the prove of ships being repaired far too fast IMO... just like my subs, those destroyers can do those runs for an endless period and the couple of points damage are repaired in a day or two if kept in a bigger port... KB obviously returning to Truk... our sub didn´t get a shot... would be cool if my destroyers could guard my capitol ships as good as the Japanese... guess it´s only a matter of die rolls but when I think about having some 50 destroyers in the same hex as my 5 carriers and still getting hit twice when having such a configuration then I´m not that amused... looks like the Tony really comes into play now... guess Rainer is going to use that fighter type for "rear" area anti bomber duty but I´m not sure how the higher service rating really turns out... I wasn´t amused to see such a number of enemy fighters in the air against a long range strike... but this being the fifth or sixth attack on Bangkok I just asked for something like this... daily recon only showed a dozen fighters at the airfield so I´m not sure if recon was wrong or if this is leaking or LRACP... I would have bet not to see Tonies in the game and so far I was convinced (not due to experience but due to the statements on the forum and from looking at the aircraft stats) that I wouldn´t see Tonies but Tojos exclusively... Rainer seems to have a different oppinion though and it also makes the game more interesting IMO... his main IJAAF fighter stays the Tojo though when looking at the enemy factories followed by the Oscar and the Tony... guess further change or increase in numbers will mainly depend on the Tonies performance... as it stands now, I´m sure the Tojo is absolutely convincing when looking at it´s performance...

I wondered all the time why my Lightnings have such a short range until I figured out I had to use the new feature of AE of using drop tanks... voilá, range increased from 6 to 16... we also flew Lightning sweeps in Burma but this with devastating effects for us and not for the enemy... tried to attack a small portion of leaking Cap but there were a hell a lot of fighters leaking out of Moulmein... the result wasn´t what I hoped for, due to the high numbers of enemies, the dive for the Lightnings had an end and then the enemy was diving on our fighters... due the 98% true uncoordination for every sweep ordered in this game (a feature after all) we did not get the numbers over the target as would have been reasonable (why would 36 fighters from one airfield to one target reasonable? the air team wasn´t paid afterall)... we took out halve a dozen enemies but lose no less than 9 of the P-38F...

and here comes the rest of the squadrons, just as usual... I wonder when I will start not being pissed off on and on and on but I fear I will just never accept and swallow this BS... yeah, one and a halve fighter squadrons were not able to fly together... for sure... we come in higher as the enemy fighters and dive on them but due to the still higher number of defenders than attackers, the enemy fighters started to dive on the Lightnings on some point... we´re victorious in this engagement but lose two of the P-38E of which we don´t get any replacements anymore and also don´t have any ac left in the pool... I "love" the stupid non coordination feature for fighters... wile you can perhaps argue about it when it comes down to the more or less "working" bomber strikes, when it goes for fighter sweeps then it´s just total BS... 2 squadrons, at least two sweeps... 5 squadrons, at least five sweeps... 20 squadrons, at least 20 sweeps... stupid...

as if the game was specifically designed to piss off paying customers, the rest of the sweeping squadrons has the 99% habit of going in "coordinated" then... yeah, in WWII, there were always bits and pieces of squadrons that got lost but those flew with different squadrons then who they met somewhere in the air on the way to the target... this worked, but having two experienced fighter squadrons in late 42 fly together to a target one or two hexes away was an impossible task... dream on...

it was a good turn in regards of being pissed off... someone made up a thread of ships (especially subs) disbanding themselve into port due to "damage"... but the damage was always only one or two points of sys or eng and Don Bowen said, IIRC, the cumulated damage has to be 10 or so that the sub disbands automatically when going back to it´s homeport to replenish... and when reading this I thought to myselve, heck, perhaps that´s how it "should" work but that´s definetely not how it works in the game... I didn´t chime in in that thread as the original thread starter was shouted down anyway and I thought I had enough problems with my pet peeve air combat anyway... well, today I not only get pissed off by the usual, stupid fighter uncoordination but also due to this non working feature of which the forum members (paying customers) were told that it would work just perfectly... it doesn´t... those two subs disbanded themsele into Milne Bay (their homeport for replenishment close to the front) due to having minimal damage, just like it has happened in this campaign dozens of times already... not every time but for sure every second or third time a sub retires with minimal damage the patrol is terminated and the sub auto disbands... this happens only with subs in my PBEM but it is completely annoying and just shouldn´t happen or only if you allow auto disband... so in this case I´ve got two subs disbanded into the port and today some Helens show up to bomb them by accident... one is in sinking condition, the other may make it... it´s not may fault, it´s yet again a non working feature and that´s what is making me far more angry than my faults or nice moves of my enemy... [:@]

either the feature isn´t like Don said, or it´s broken and a so called BUG... as it happens really often, I doubt that I am one of the few who experiences this...

the hit rate of the Mk-14 torps stays insane, it´s far over 90% no matter what we target... if there won´t be some serious change as soon as the torps start to work then the enemy will run out of escorts in no time I gues... numbers of subs in enemy waters is about 50% of our total strenght but this could be easily changed into 70-80%...

note that we had a Spitfire on leaking Cap here... I´ve brought in two squadrons of Australian Spitfires because they can fly by far higher than the US fighters, no matter if P-40 or F4F-4 for example... while we can´t keep the Spits from leaking either, the fact that they can go higher than the Zeroes resulted in the dive for the single Spit instead of the Zeroes and two Zeroes were shot down before they caught the Spitfire... the pilot survived btw... looks like the 18 SpitfireV per month will be the best weapon against Zero sweeps... of course, the Oscar and the Tojo could both go higher than the Spit but at least the Tojo doesn´t have the range to reach out far enough from Rabaul and we do our best to keep all other airfields in the area suppressed...

I really find it funny that the air routine always works exactly the same... let the fact aside that leaking Cap shouldn´t be there anyway the way it is modelled IMO, the first strike encounters some enemy figthers, the next strike finds more of them then... and it´s always like this... predictable...

in this case, the 8 Spitfires at 37.000ft (max alt) were very bad news for the Zeroes at 32.000ft (max alt)... the usual story, dive and four Zeroes are shot down for no loss on the Spits... a couple of those encounters should end those Zero sweeps as long as we´ve got fighters that can fly higher...

been lucky here, while the Zeroes were diving on our fighters, they could only achieve some damaging hits while at the end of the engagement a P-40 got a lucky shot at one of the Zeroes and downs it... all four of our fighters were damaged though and three were lost (1 shot down, 2 written off)...

the side that has fighters that can fly higher than the enemy will put an end to such sweeps pretty fast...

we send in the bombers to do a milk run on Lae and the bombers got escorted which in that case was a bad idea... the Rufes took out two of the P-40K for no loss... sometime I wonder if it´s worth it spending hours and hours on my pilot training programme to have a thousand 70 skilled fighter pilots in the pool when they don´t seem to be any better than the 45 skilled pilots I had at 12/7/41...

we have the ability to fly higher than all Japanese fighters if we send out our Lightnings... after the succesful first sweep out of Port Moresby with drop tanks we today targetted the base just one hex East of Rabaul in the hopes to meet some leaking Cap... "some" wasn´t true here, more fighters than I wanted to see to be honest but we had the dive of course... many of the Tojos turned back due to low morale which indicates once more that the features and problems of this game usually hit both sides... the Tojos more or less never saw combat but have a low morale from flying Cap over Rabaul... amazingly enough, the one Lightning lost over the target was shot down by one of the Nicks but in the end we take out 11 enemies for 2 Lightnings lost (including one pilot)... that´s the way to go for both sides, use your fighters on sweeps to engage leaking Cap and hope to be able to fly higher than the enemy...

They really need to fix the altitude thing... Simply toning that down would revolutionise how air combat works. Surely that's only a minor tweak?

yeah, putting the altitude bands into the game was a nice step forward but that doesn´t help you at all if it turns out in the game as it does now, with the dive being so powerful that everyone tries to get higher than the enemy. While diving on the enemy in real life surely was something you wanted to achieve, I seriously doubt that this lead to fighters flying at their ceiling all the time and as we all know, the airwar in the Pacific was usually fought at low - medium altitudes and not at altitudes like over Germany. It´s the total opposite in AE though, the altitudes we fight leaves the war over Germany looking like a low altitude fight.
