VMF-211 Upgrade

Post by NAVMAN »

Hi All: Noted that in scens 1,2,7, and 8, VMF-211 has a unit at PH(2587) and a det(2588)
at Wake. With pdu "off", the unit at PH shows it upgrading to F2A-3s
while the det at Wake has its upgrade shown as F4F-3 Wildcats, the plane it currently
has. Why would the unit at PH go to F2A-3s? If this is incorrect, can it be corrected
w/o having to save the scen to a new slot in order to make the correction?

Thx.

Probably because that is what happened historically. Some of the marine squadrons downgraded to older aircraft to free these up for use on CVs.

If you play with PDU off, you will have to go through that upgrade.

Edit - Also, no, you cannot edit the official scenarios, but making a clone and changing it is not all that difficult thanks to the editor.

This is correct. VMF-211 downgraded to F2's in order to free up Wildcats for other units. The forward detachment has no upgrade scheduled because it didn't exist for very long.

Thx all. I usually play w/pdu "off", so I'll deal with it.

If you are fortunate enough to combine both separate detachments back inot the original unit (assuming playing with PDU 'off'), what upgrade path will it show?

It first goes to the F2A-3 and then on to one of the F4Fs.

Hello with PDU off I cant get the the two units to remerge.  The HQ is the same but the planes are different (F4F-4 for the VMF211 and F4F-3 for the VMF211 DET).  I cant get the VMF 211 DET to upgrade.  Is there a way to get the units to Merge?

Thanks

No.

To merge both units must fly the same plane.

You can also disband them permanently & be able to add a/c to the main unit since no fragment will be around but otherwise you need them to have the same a/c to merge

I think what jcjordan means is you can disband the fragment. Then the parent unit can expand to full strength. You will lose a few planes though but it is not the end of the world.

Aren't they two entirely different units, not a fragment of the other?

Hello

jeffk3510 is right. For the game engine these two units (VMF 211 and VMF 211 Det) are separated units and can never be recombined.

You can see this via editor.

I like these unit (VMF 211 Det) und use it for small carrier.

I looked in the editor and for VMF-211 Det I see it has a Parent, VMF-211. I do think they can
be combined and I am sure that I have in the past

I tested this, as long as they have the same HQ and the same aircraft model, they will recombine.

Disbanding is an interesting option... But I think the better is to use the Det to augment the air component to one of your carriers, in no time at all they become "carrier trained" and are a real plus... you can never have too many fighters.

In the db VMF211 is the parent of the VMF211 detachment so if you look at the main VMF211 unit in the game it says someting like X # of a/c less detachment of x # of planes up near the top left of the unit info screen. As long as the detachment exists, the main unit will always be able to add planes to the max unit size less the detachment size (forget size offhand of detachment). Once you disband the detachment you can add a/c to the main unit up to max size. That's the main reason I disband it permanently so I don't have fragment hanging around. Later on in the war (44-45) you get some USN/USMC units that come in this way as they're a combo unit of F6F fighter & F6F recon detachment & maybe a F6F night fighter. In this case if you disband the detachments you get rid of the recon/nf elements in favor of a regular all fighter unit.

As to Dr Hal on having it sit around to train for carrier pilots, my view is the US gets many units that can do this anyway through the replacement groups on the CVEs so it's unneeded to keep the detachment. Not to mention the US CV group resizes that happen.
