I bought this game yesterday and at the moment I just can say that Pirates are very annoying...

Now I need to read some AAR's to understand how to play it.
Anyhow DW looks good, my congrats [:)]

Pirates are there to give you soemthing to do while you build up your evil fleet of conquest...
Also, they are very useful for information on independant colonies and ruins.

ASL! cool. I had and played Squad Leader all the way back to its beginnings. Panzer Blitz and Panzer Leader before SL was created. I even won an ASL tournement at a West Point wargaming convention one year.
RL too tight to make any regular meetings with friends to play any boardgames.
Now all my gaming is online.

Be sure to arm your mining stations, and get shields on up on them. If you are particularly evil (like me) put a hyperdeny and a LR scanner on them as well...

Uhm...in the next game that I will play, at the beginning I'd like to keep all my maintenance costs rather low, I thought to build some Escort ships for patrol duty and just add some shields to my mining stations, maybe armor, it should give me the necessary reaction time...
A Destroyers fleet will smash up all Pirates bases that it will find. (Pirates setting: few)

Honestly, it is probably cheaper to arm the stations. I generally go with 4-5 shields and 6 lasers/torpedos. That is more than enough to handle your typical pirate raider, and you don't need as many ships darting about the map.
