ORIGINAL: Andy Mac

I am reading and taking it in I need to understand whats working and not working - the AI seems to be acting sensibly so far

Andy, I think the AI does best in a smaller defensive role, I dont know how it would work as the Allies in this scenario.
The only complaint is the AI doesnt know when to stop its air attacks, but then we might consider the IRL attacks on the Okinawa Invasion forces as being stupid. Its so hard to know what is right and what needs tweaking!

Andy,
Seems to me that the ai is overall doing a creditable job. I especially like how it has
been using subs off the west coast. The only thing that did not seem kosher was the raid
on Singapore by a patrol boat.

Hi All: Thought I would take a step back and let you know what my plan is for invasion.
The first landing will be on Kanoya, with the following forces:
Initial Attack:
V Amphib Corps
3 mar divs
1 mar amph tk batt
corps arty
3 mar tk batts
1 mar td batt

Follow-Up(if needed)
X Corps
3 inf divs
corps arty
2 tk batts
corps eng

If the assault goes well, I'll push X Corps on to Kagoshima to support the landings there.

Kagoshima
XXIV Corps
3 inf divs
2 arm batts
corps arty
corps engr rgt
attached arm divs

I Corps
3 inf divs
1 tk batt
corps arty
corps eng rgt

The riskiest move may be this one:
Shimonosek
11 Abn Div
The reason I want to do this is to secure the road leading to the main isl and to keep
more Jap. troops from coming south. I have an inf unit on Okinawa which will be used
to support 11 Abn.

Air support to be provided by fighters on Okinawa and Omami Oshima. I do not
plan to use CVs on this one. I think I have ample land based fighters. B-29s
from Formosa and Mariannas to prep the targets.
Let me know what you think, especially the drop by 11 Abn.

thx.

Have a look at what you are likely to come up against, you have plenty of Recce assets.

You have plenty of assault troops and APA/LCI etc to "do a job" on your chosen target, dont get too adventurous and find that you have 2-3 beachheads to fight for.

IMHO, Airborne units in AE are great for picking up empty bases, not that I've tried an airborne assault on a defended base, If you dont capture the base , how long will it take to fight your way through to relieve it, make sure its not a Bridge Too Far.

Ive had a look at future Allied reinforcements, and note 3 US Airborne Divs & A Brit/Indian Para Div still to arrive. I might get silly and land 5 Airborne Divs and 2 Para Rgts as a prelude to the invasion of Honshu!

Hi JeffK: My last recon showed approx 66k troops at Kagoshima and approx 34k troops
at Kanoya. I'm hoping that quality will help to offset any numerical advantage during the initial landing at Kagoshima. I'm not too concerned about Kanoya. Re: the paras, yes,
it could be dicey, so the inf div on Okinawa is prepping for the same objective. Has the potential for a disaster, but as someone said, paratroopers are supposed to be surrounded.
Btw, I have a map shot ready to go, but have no idea how to post one. Do you know how?

Thx.

No, I have no idea how to post maps, roughly you save it a file and then add it to the post. Real helpful arent I[:D]

My fear for the paras if the dont get the base you cant fly in the Infantry. Unless you do a mad APD landing.

Paras are supposed to be surrounded, but you have to have a plan to get them out. I'm not sure Dien Bien Phu was a good example to follow.

Jeffk,
The way I'm hoping this works out, is that I make the initial landing at Kanoya.
Asap after that, the Kagoshima force goes in. At that point, the paras drop.
The inf unit on Okinawa will already be loaded and depending on how the paras make out
I will either use them to reinforce and support the paras OR if the paras are doomed,
will reinforce one of the other landing sites or pick a "target of opportunity".
I will reinforce success but not failure, if that befalls the paras.
I have converted some of my C46 units to C54s. I've moved the paras to Okinawa and
will launch from there.

Thx.

Summary:
Formosa is now in my hands, all enemy units eliminated. Engineers are bldg level 9
airflds at three locations.I've moved in B32s and B29s to the af on the w. coast of Formosa
and they have started raids on Kanoya. Lancs are moving into the middle af and B17s
and B24s will move into the e. coast af.
I'm expanding Amami to handle Corsairs and Hellcats. I'll try and get my P80 outfit there
as well.
Units are prepping in Manila for the assaults. The units on Formosa are also prepping
and will be used where needed, hopefully to exploit breakouts.
Units on Guam, at PH and US w coast are prepping to hit Chiba on the main isl.
I have continued raids on Tokyo airfields w/good results and have continued to hit ground
targets on Kanoya and Kagoshima.
Just about ready to take the plunge, hopefully not literally.

I think you could Andy, relocate some of the force to Okinawa and use LCI etc to do the short lift.

You could do the Kanoya landings and get the ships back for the Kagoshima lift. (I think this is NAVMAN's plan from earlier)

Big problem is co-ordinating the CAP, I always found some TF out of place and out of under the umbrella.

I also think the fort level of Kanoya 7 Formosan bases a bit low given invasion has been coming for 12 mths.

I have Formosa just about cleaned up. I should have the entire Island in 3-5 days.

I look forward to seeing how your invasion of Kanoya and Kagoshima progresses.

Good Luck.
