A couple of questions...

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

A couple of questions...

Post by Perturabo »

So, I'm going to obtain a larger sum of money soon and I kinda don't know what to buy, so I thought I could as well go crazy and buy myself a "Ferrari"[;)].

I have a few questions:
1. Has anyone tried running it on Wine? I'm able to play the first AA game on Wine, I wonder if it would be possible with BftB too.

2. Is it possible to reduce the scope of the game? I'm not very fond of commanding units above battalion but for some weird reasons most of games on that levels are babysitting simulators.
Would it be possible to use the estab/scenario editor to create a battalion/company-sized force down to individual platoon/squad and have it behave reasonably?

3. What is the minimal display resolution in game?

Not sure about WINE. Try the demo when it comes out. Even if it runs, you know that it will not be officially supported under WINE.

Min res is 1024x768.

I'll wait for the demo, then. Thanks for the answer.

Another question ... I see the minimum system req's list Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Is SP3 required or is that simply the NT version everyone had on their box during development and testing? Will it run on SP2?

Thanks

I don't know about SP2. Myself, I am on SP3.

You do know that support for SP2 ends in July? (Mean not more critical update security patches.) SP3 is covered to 2014.

I can't vouch that it will run on XP2 but I suspect it will. I'd wait and test it on the demo. As Mark said it's no longer supported by MS and we no longer have any machines here running it.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have a box that has all the specs but I travel for work and have not decided whether to put it on lap top or desk top ( the good one ). The laptop is for work and hasn't been upgraded yet due to some old software issues (industrial process controls stuff that had issues with SP3) ... don't ask me what it was but my laptop is one that's not upgraded yet.

thanks again

Hi there Pertubaro,

Yes, I have tried running BftB under Wine (Ubuntu 9.10) and the game itself installed successfully. However, the installation hanged while installing the additional components (C++ library, .Net, and DX). Therefore, it was a no go under Wine (I tried to run the game despite the fact that the additional components did not install properly and it did not work). Perhaps one could run BftB under Cedega/Transgaming (they have a DB of games that are known to work) for they seem to have better support for Win games (for a fee, of course) but I can not vouch for that.

Hi all,

Minimal resolution is 1024x768 (justa s Dave pointed out).

As a sidenote I did run BftB on several virtual machines using both Sun (now Oracle) VirtualBox or VMware at the same time on my testbed (I think that at one point I had 3 virtual machine guests running BftB on single host)!

Thus, if the graphics acceleration works on both VirtualBox and VMware virtualizators for BftB I think / hope that it might run just fine on Wine as well...

I installed it with wine on Ubuntu 10.04 and the CmdOps.exe works, although minimap has a black background.

The installer hang on NET install, but after I canceled the component install I was able to run the game.

Your millage may vary, but it is worth a try

.Net is only needed for the Estab Editor, so it is safe to skip that.

Thanks for the answers.

Does the estab when .NET is installed with Winetricks?

BTW.
I have noticed that a few strategic games don't display maps on Wine - for example the minimap on screenshot here, WPO map, etc.
I wonder what is missing in Wine. Any ideas what can it be? It would be good to report it at WineHQ.

Well the code creates a DIBSection.
Also calls ::StretchBitmapSmoothly()

But just standard GDI type stuff really.

Hi Perturabo - I had a look at this recently and it seemed to be down to graphics drivers rather than software; there were a few threads on the Wine forum to do with World of Warcraft in particular. Didn't find a usable answer ... if you do I'd be interested to know what to do.

Did anyone try to run the estab editor on wine, when the software needed to run it is installed with winetricks?
