Episodes: Bri al Gubi Armour clash

Post by OlegHasky »

Ok, this ones for You all desert foxes out there..

It is the tactical situation in operation on "Bir el Gobi" that requires Your attention.

The situation after dawn D1 looks like this:

Image[/img]

Focus on the left flank, where I tooked the objective with combined armour force (2nd Royal Gloucestershire Hussars HQ, and 3rd COuntry of London Yeomanny HQ)
Main Alied Amrour force is on the spot there. .

General Balotta´s "Ariete" Armour division forces arrived at the battlefield at about 1300-1400 hours..
Short after gaing the objective by my forces, He lunched initial attack on the aera.
The attack was probobly designed as an examination (lunched short before the sundown) , wasnt realy determined, and ended short. My forces prevailed in holding the objective. Loosing 1 of Crusader I (Mk15) tanks, And scorring (I think) about 3 Italians M13 tanks.

As in the scenario Im in the heated Gen. Gott head (who couldnt resist to play with his new Crusader toys that was handed to him)
Im on to roleplay his flamboyant mind, and bout to go all the way.
Not making a step back, with almost sure secondary (this time determined, and with grather number) Italian attack - wich I predict could came as a night approach, or early morning attack.

Im on to stay here, to establish defenssive position during the night hours, anticipating the attack.

As it looks, this isnt an ordinary defenssive desert doctrine position. It hasnt a force in back for potential counter-strike.
It relyes on defenssive , and aiming to waste a good number of Italian Armour.
The position containing only tanks, no Inf soupport, etc.. Serious Inf reinforstmants arriving at deep night from El Cuasc direction, but I dont think they could reach my position before it will all play out. Only thing I want to do is to drag the 40mm Bofors AA guns to the rear - so they could reply to any attemt of bypassing my right flank.

The shot below (not sopose to be precisely accurate) but sopose to provide you a "look" on the battlefield, the forces odd, and what sort of bulge the Itallians will have to deal with.

Image[/img]

The Italians probobly could use also their Infantry (though they do not have AT weapons , Im still expecting Balotta to send them as a psychological factor, and some sort of curtain or shield for his precious M13s)

Brand new Crusaders are on the line, along with Gott very reputation.

If it succed - Wasting a good number of Italian armour, and not loosing our to the significant degree will open the opportunity for the counter-attack on the Bir El Gobi itself, wich probobly will have a big impact on the whole operation outcome.
If it failed.. well I think Gott can grab his line gear..

I am curious about your sugestions. About the position itself. And the Italian tactic of preforming the ofenssive move on such position.

There's something of a discontinuity in trying to simulate this battle.

I say that because Bob Crisp makes reference to the "minefields of el Gubi" in his book, Brazen Chariots.

He does so in expressing his desire to get at "the Eyeties" (Italian) Ariete armored division, once they were clear of the mines.

All that I've ever seen in the way of maps for the battle were pencil drawn, and none depict the presence of a minefield.
