What was the first wargames you played?

Post by lordhoff »

Mine were "Battle Cry", "Dogfight", and "Broadside" by (I think) Milton Bradley. All had some sort of plastic pieces. "Battle Cry" had inf, cav, and art with different capabilities, "Broadside" - War of 1812 - had ships who's strength depended on the number of sails and sails were taken off by hits. "Dogfight" had planes mounted on a stand when in flight and used cards rather then dice. All were very basic but hard for a pre-teen who had to draft his brother-in-law to teach him how to play them.

Wizards of the Coast-AH makes Battle Cry still. One of my favorite head-to-head games that don't take much time. Nice looking set, too.

The Russian Campaign by Avalon Hill back in 1978. I found this backstreet shop in Nottingham, and quickly realised I was in heaven. They also stocked SPI games, and I subscribed to Strategy and Tactics mag. My first computer wargame was Gettysburg by SSI in 1989.

My first "wargame" I think was Hit the beach, wich was also an American Heritage game from Milton Bradley just like Broadsides and Battle Cry. Later on when I got a serious wargame, wich I considder my 1st wargame was Avalon Hills Blitzkreig and Africa Korps. I got them both at the same time. ahhhhh the memories [;)]

I made my own with Airfix soldiers and maps of Germany "borrowed" from the British Army until I discovered a copy of France 1940 in a locker in a RN training establishment. Never looked back. The first one I ever played against live opoonents was Richtofen's War in the IFF room of HMS Galatea.

Which shop? There was, back in the 80's, a wargame shop in the Broadmarsh Centre.

Hard to remember everything, maybe something like Risk, I also did have Dog Fight, but first real wargame is in my signature (The original square version)

Perhaps a bit off topic, but my interest may have started in the toy world. When I was a kid toy guns and other accessories were common and were among the biggest toys for boys in particular. Also big were "miniatures" toy play sets of rubber, plastic or metal soldiers. My favorite big set was "The Blue and the Gray" but I also had revolutionary war, WWII, Cowboys and Indians and even ordered those cheap plastic sets from the back of comic books. I suppose today, much of it would be considered politically incorrect, but that is how we were raised. WWII was over and the "Happy Days" 50's were in full swing.

The first I bought and could never get anyone to play it with me - Flattop boardgame.

The first I really played - I'd have to say West Front with the watercolor painting of Eisenhower on the front.

You know, I may have had hit the beach too. Did it have army and marine counters that moved from a dot to the next connected by lines on Pacific islands?

Wow talk about a classic. I never played it myself but that was the model for many.

It is amazing how many of these games I remembered and played. First "real" wargame was AH's "Battle of the Bulge" but I've played Flatop (even had to decide what ordinance to use and changing it took time), and many of the others. Got into computer games late - I think "Alexander's Battles" was first soon followed by Talon Soft's Gettysburg.

I am certain it was Wollaton Street. I am from Newark originally, and at the time I was on leave from the Army in Germany. I would sometimes go to Nottingham for a day of boozing, and lurking around.

I first found the AH game Gettysburg in 1981 or '82 which was decent, and then I found Squad Leader and the deal was sealed. I had friends that also liked board wargaming that back then. Early on I also liked War and Peace.

I also had those milton bradley games, but my first serious game was "Kriegspiel" by Avalon Hill. No dice in that game, players picked an attack card and a defense card, and the battle results came from their choices. You could also put the two gameboards side by side,or end too end. I still play it from time to time.
