Japanese Ships

A pity these ships were not hit... the Dauntless were flying 1000 lb bombs around

Looking back, I should have set the Dauntless to a lower search/rest percentage, but frankly I did not expect that little CAP and wanted to save high quality pilots. I actually had not thought I would even achieve something with the strike other than reinofrcing the message "there's something out there" and maybe a scare...

and the beginning of Ketza's retaliation... poor Wake garrison... The squadrons had been moved back to Midway, damaged airframes destroyed. After all, I did expect some bombardment and/or attacks on the base and did not want to spoil the surprise by a message relating to a Dauntless destroyed on the ground...

So, in the end I think my little fake may have achieved what it was supposed to achieve - pull out a CV force, cause some delay and extra ship movements. The numerous subs which I vectored in pulled off a few attacks, even though they did not hunt anything down (which was unlikely anyway bearing in mind the dud torpedoes). Everything on top of that was bonus.

What I should have done better was keep an eye on supply levels at Wake - actually, I sent an xAK there too late. I assume that the landings were easier than it may have been the case if the CD unit would have been fully supplied (even though the numerous bombardments definitely took their toll as well). Well, maybe next time. That would be Midway, would it not [;)]

Not necessarily, it could be Johnston Island and thence onto the Line Islands. Depends on whether he wants to capture/neutralise Hawaii or attempt to sever the SLOC between USA and Australia.

thanks for chiming in. I was actually trying to employ the connotation of Midway that may be present in my esteemed readership's mind, not really trying to predict next moves and much less trying to imply something about my future plans.

In addition, what I would like to try to do is to try to influence his decision there. Note the completely intentional double use of "try" in this context, it is essential - not sure whether I manage to do so at all. I a way, we are back at the starting point of my Wake considerations.

On the other hand, the rewards if I manage to exert this influence this could be... attractive [8D].

Thanks again for chiming in

Restart

Post by modrow »

Gentlemen,

in the mean time, we have played on till January 2nd. Ketza did invade Java around Christmas, I did not update (in spite of several intercepts of KB by light surface forces which were breathtaking) because I think his approach is quite imaginative and interesting and I was a bit hesitant to give away his little secrets. In the future, this will change, because he seems to plan to set up an AAR of the new game, so he will be giving away his own and/or my secrets, and I intend to retaliate.

However, some two days ago my opponent has requested a restart and I agreed. The reason was a mistake he made in turn 3 or so which caused parts of his malaya army to land in the middle of nowhere far away from Malaya. After a long march, he was still far away from being able to load these troops and ship them into action. So I agreed to start over, although from my point of view he was doing very well (and the right things).

At the same time, I'll admit that I did agree with a bleeding heart - not because I think I have achieved a lot, but because a) I am a bit afraid of doing another turn 2 (we play with the HR that in turn 1 all I can do is moce existing TFs) due to its sheer volume and b) because now that my opponent knows a lot of my early moves, he can avoid the slits in his armor I did exploit last time to draw some blood. So I have to come up with something new, without having done major additional testing and in a field with actually quite limited options in view of a foe that can crush anything I can bring to bear if positioned correctly. Ah well, c'est la guerre, as Nemo would most likely put it, after all it is part of my job to try to make sure he is not positioned adequately - which will be difficult. The summary of the first game for me is that Ketza very efficiently pressed me out of the areas of operation, systematically closing fields, destroying shipping in ports and and preventing buildup of forts.

At first, this is definitely going to start very slowly (because of the need to redo turn 2), but I hope we will pick up speed again in a reasonable amount of time.

Preface to the new game...

Post by modrow »

Gentlemen,

The (new) game is on –finally. Allied turn 2 was worse to do for me than I had feared and took me forever to prepare, OTOH I believe I have now one of the most thoroughly organized game starts I have ever had. What will improve in this game for me will most likely be the organization/disposition of the merchant shipping; in addition think I have started to understand pilot training better than I did before and will most likely be able to keep my pilots in better shape.

Other than that, I have concerns. Not sure whether I will be able to keep this game interesting in the first few months, because I am quite sure Ketza (who writes an AAR himself) will have optimized his starting sequence further, with some adaptions to what I did before. The problem here is 20/20 hindsight, against which the +/- 60 day variation re. reinforcements helps only too little. An example for this from turn one (which fortunately did not end badly; I did comment on it though)

Morning Air attack on Toungoo , at 57,50

Weather in hex: Clear sky
Raid spotted at 16 NM, estimated altitude 29,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 6

No Japanese losses

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x A6M2 Zero sweeping at 25000 feet * om the starting turn is this one:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Toungoo , at 57,50

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid detected at 38 NM, estimated altitude 9,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 13 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 18

Allied aircraft
no flights

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
H81-A3: 2 destroyed on ground

Allied ground losses:
6 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 7

Aircraft Attacking:
18 x G4M1 Betty bombing from 6000 feet
Airfield Attack: 2 x 250 kg GP Bomb, 4 x 60 kg GP Bomb

I can accept that long time recon can tell the attacker at the beginning of a war involving total surprise what is located at a given base, allowing for a very good target selection. This would be the only reason why one attacks Toungoo. However, if I am aware that there are 70ish fighter planes at the base, I would not really send 6 of my own fighters for a sweep followed by 18 unescorted bombers, but a more substantial force (which is unfortunately not available, as then the desired success at the other attack locations was not going to materialize). This order results from knowledge about the details of the setup, here that the orders of the planes have not been changed (as fixed by house rule). As it is, I know that an important unit of my opponent is overstacked on that field, will not be able to harm me, so I can have a go at it. At 6k, as I know the AAA available at that base as well.

Now, you can say that with respect to the positions of air units, this is what I agreed to when agreeing to the house rule that they may not be used. You are correct, though the extent to which one makes use of that may vary. Still, I provide the example because in my opinion it tells a lot about what this game is to be about in the starting phase: I fight against an optimized, well tested sequence of operations, which I have to try to interfere with without really having the strength to meet them head on.

So, what to do ? Make him deviate from the plan while trying to soften the impact of the blows I take. This is the main task for the first few game weeks. It won't be easy.

Enough said. There’s a war to be won.

Thanks for your renewed interest

The day saw systematic disablement of port and air facilities with a clear accent on shipping. Sweeps go in first, followed by waves of bombers. Allied air assets are lured into strikes into well devised traps and destroyed.

In the context of my above 20/20 comment, note that there are a lot of Zeros used in ground attack mode, e.g. in the PI:

18 x A6M2 Zero bombing from 100 feet
Airfield Attack: 2 x 60 kg GP Bomb

If there was CAP from the P40 squadrons available at those bases, this would result in slaughter. But as we KNOW the settings for turn one, we can maximize what we can get. Well. I’ll try what I can do to take away hindsight as fast as I can. I keep harping about it now because it defines the borderlines of what can or cannot be done in this game by myself for me.

Gentlemen,

here's some impression about what the Manila variant will do for you re. sunk ships (most remaining units are damaged):

Here's the info re. air losses. Note that there are only few ground losses (mostly port attacks) and mostly due to the triggered Allied air attacks. Nothing to be done about that...

Great play by my opponent...

Post by modrow »

Gentlemen,

Before I provide you with information re. turn 2, I would like to provide you with a nice little gem of good gameplay by my opponent, which may get lost otherwise.

As you know from the post relating to turn 1, Cotabatu was invaded. This base is at a location that makes it likely that Boise or Houston will be around after turn one, and my gameplay in the previous game made it likely that I would react to the TF at that location with a surface asset.

At the same time, fighter cover may be provided over the SCTF/Cotabatu if there are operational P40 left after turn one. This looked adequate, as I knew that the air combat TF Ketza had in the vicinity comprised only one CVL from a previous surface intercept. In this game, Houston was in striking position, and I had about 20 planes set to LRCAP the ship from 2 hex distance.

This is a screenshot showing the situation, Houston, the CV TF (green circle) and the scheduled route (direct route ordered).

Image

Ketza seems to have moved his assets out of harms way to begin with. Then, the following took place:

1) A “powerful” sweep busying my CAP

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid spotted at 31 NM, estimated altitude 7,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 16 minutes

Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 9

No Japanese losses

No Allied losses

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x F1M2 Pete sweeping at 6000 feet
Sweep: 2 x 30 kg GP Bomb

2) a second and third sweep, this time more substantiated. Where from ? KB… I should have known… He was located at the east coast of the PI, all he had to do is sail south.

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 9

No Japanese losses

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x A6M2 Zero sweeping at 16000 feet

3) here comes the strike package. With my previous CAP in place, I may have at least dealt some losses to the units from his CVL. After his excellent previous play, this looks different…

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Cotabato at 78,90

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid spotted at 44 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 18 minutes

December 8th...

Post by modrow »

Gentlemen,

Here’s finally the promised information re. turn 2. I limited myself to the more essential snips from the Combat Report, so you don’t get the full picture. E.g., naturally my opponent had surface assets in place to eliminate ships fleeing from Manila, of course he swept on a regular basis before bombing runs… Just assume he makes the right moves from a technical point of view - he probably will have done that.

I tried a bit of harassment using light surface assets with varying success. I don’t expect to have suitable base infrastructure available for long (remember the Christmas Java invasion in the previous game) to support surface assets, so I need to take what I can get early on. Better gunnery by Marblehead may have helped ;)
