first attack today and I´m positively surprised... I didn´t expect to get a 1:1 already to be honest but seeing disruption as a negative multiplier for the defender was good... that they´ve also got experience as a negative multiplier is surprising, same as the fact that they seem to have ample supply... we didn´t get any multipliers which is surprising to me too, experience for my units is 58 for example... can 2nd Div be even lower experienced? A 1:1 now already convinces me that no reinforcements are needed to take the base, especially as the enemy took quite some losses in combat squads already. Seems like this invasion will become a full success too, the base will fall within a reasonable time frame and we took out some 170+ enemy aircraft for nearly no losses and except the usual ships suffering from collissions we have not suffered any damage to ships...

ok, it wasn´t a relocation mission to Rabaul, the enemy was on a bombardment mission to Salamaua... I´m missing the reason behind this as my troops are only marching through this base and am not building it up at all, as it would be just too dangerous to base aircraft at this side of New Guinea... I don´t even regularly use Milne Bay due to being in high danger of naval bombardments... I wouldn´t risk those BBs for such a not really useful mission... got nearly two dozen subs in this area but so far they haven´t been a real threat...

back to back deliberate attack with another excellent result... the defender now also has fatigue as a negative multiplier while we don´t have positive nor neagtive multipliers... shouldn´t 100% preparation for sure result in a positive one? Anyway, Merauke will fall far easier than expected and Rainer will lose one of his divisions... he probably saved a fragment but rebuilding a whole division will take a long time and it will also take a lot of arm points, which also means he will perhaps have to produce more than he would like if we are getting in an ongoing fight now...

DD Yudachi firing at 41st Infantry Division
DD Harusame firing at 32nd Infantry Division

unspotted as usual, the enemy sends in a naval bombardment force to attack our ground units but that´s a no brainer in AE... no damage is done and I haven´t noticed any increase in disruption or fatigue either, both divisions are in perfect shape... the USN base force traded some shots with Yamashiro but the 155mm shell just scratched a little paint... none of my carriers or surface combat forces is in the vicinty anymore and I´m glad about it as I just don´t want to run into a fight yet... with this BB TF going to Merauke, I also expect KB to be somewhere near... I have no clue about the whereabout of KB though...

a direct sweep to Milne Bay? Tired of attacking leaking Cap it seems... [:D] The Oscars bounced most of our squadrons, achieving very good results during that phase of the engagement but at some point the Spitfires entered the scene and began to shred the IJAAF fighters... we lose some more fighters after the Spits retired but in the end it surely wasn´t a favourable outcome for the Japanese... these results are something I surely can live with, I´m glad I´ve got at least one fighter here that can fly higher than the enemy...

Japanese Task Force Manages to Escape
Task forces break off...

I had high hopes for this turn as wanted to trash one of the more or less daily fast transport TFs going to Lae... well, it started off as planned as my surface combat group that was based at Milne Bay was able to find the enemy coming in at Lae and we even got suprise against the fast transport TF but not a single shell has hit the enemy during the surprise phase (hundreds were fired)... then the enemy started to fire back with minial results (one non penetrating hit on Nashville) and we kept on hitting the ocean... range was closing more and more, that doesn´t mean hit rate would really become better though, both TFs couldn´t hit anything... lots of torps were fired, all Japanese torps missed, one US DD managed to hit a Japanese DD with dud torps... at 2000 yards Ralph Talbot was hit by a 25mm shell while some of th enemy ships took hits from medium gunfire... none of the enemies took any serious damage, when looking at our ships at the end of the turn, they nearly have expanded 75% of their total main ammo... that´s odd... considering how many shells fired that would mean and the fact that the two TFs closed to even 2000 yards you probably could sink of some more hits, especially from the fast firing, modern USN CLs... I expected to more or less whipe the floor with the Japanese but it seems destroyers, fully loaded with soldiers on their deck fight just as good as being in a surface combat TF... it was a completely unsuccesful mission and just encourages the enemy do keep on using his fast transport TFs in this area as I seem not to be able to hurt them...

Merauke falls with the fourth attack, the operation was a full success... both our divisions are in very good shape (still far above 90% combat readiness) and have already been set to prepare for their next target... we´re now sending in lots of support and engineering units as Merauke should be built up asap... it´s a pity that there´s not a single base at this side of New Guinea in the area of Merauke for the next step, the next bases are some 600 miles away...

You know, forget about coordination. I doubt this is going to be fixed. However, a simple solution is to allow us to combine fighter squadrons into 72 plane groups and bombers into 48 plane groups, just like we could in WITP. (and we all screamed for the ability to break them down[:D]) And that will allow us to at least put a certain number of planes up on a sweep or a bombing attack. Of course then JFBs will start screaming because our 70 plane sweeps will then trump their 45 plane sweeps and reverse the tactical situation and actually give us air superiority in 11/42. [;)] And that would be just horrible.

Perhaps as a balance. Allow, no full groups at any base smaller than 7. That seems fair.

Actually I´m not a fan of having everything broken down to squadrons anyway because when this was needed you could do in WITP anyway with dividing groups (to a certain amount of available slots though). Now you´ve got 5 squadrons of 12 bombers each somewhere and with those 60 aircraft you´re far away from the engine overstacking on a bigger airfield but you´ve already run into the administrative overstacking (which I´m also no fan of). There´s just too much difference between the Japanese and the Allied, so those things mostly disadvantage the Allied and I wonder why the Allied should be worse than the Japanese when it comes down to administratives.

As can be seen anyway, both my opponent and me have long been focussing on attacking leaking Cap only. Like the airroutines are now, with the two big issues of non-coordination (coordination isn´t existing in the game, no matter what the non-playing ex-dev and his marketing department says) and the altitude issue, the only way to fight the enemy is sending in one squadron to attack preferrable not more than 10-12 enemy fighters at lower alt.

we had to redo two turns due to the fast transport bug when Rainer has lost some of his heavy cruisers going to Lae... his TF just stopped two or three hexes off Lae and was pummeled by my Mitchells from Terapo... Don Bowen confirmed that´s a known bug which is adressed in patch four so we went back a turn... unfortunetely I don´t have the 28th and 29th Dec combat report anymore...

wow, for all the MK-14 duds I got a wonderful attack by one of the normally useless Dutch subs... it was the first time that I saw a sub firing two salvoes right after another... the first salvo got one hit and the second salvo got two hits... guess this heavy cruiser is in serious trouble now, there was no sound for a ship sinking so I´m pretty sure the cruiser was still afloat after this attack... I expect the ship to head for Rabaul but that port could only repair minor flt damage, same should be true for Truk also though... if the ship won´t sink, it perhaps would be stuck at Truk/Rabaul...

enemy sub attacks one of our destroyers and spots one of our CV TFs (except the CVs [:D]) that is covering the reinforcement convoy to Merauke... bringing in lots of engineering units and some 80.000 supplies, Merauke will reach level 5 airfield in no time (10 days?) as it´s now a level 1 but can be built to 8. The airfield will be maxxed out, then we´re going to start working on the port, currently level 1 (SPS 4) and parrallel we´re going to build some forts but building forts isn´t really important as I seriously doubt there would be a counterinvasion as that would be just suicide...

one of the two British ASW TFs in this area enters the scene again and sinks an enemy sub... this time the sub didn´t fire a single torp after being forced to surface which was quite surprising as I usually see one and most often even more torp salvoes fired after surfacing... that´s definetely a confirmed kill, there are at least three more subs in this area...

the same TF attacks another sub today, achieving one hit and nearly a dozen near misses... pretty sure the sub will survive but should be forced to withdraw... if you need a competent ASW force, you can really rely on the British...

The Oscars are sent to Buna today but the leaking Cap probably isn´t what Rainer expected it to be... Buna got radar and therefore lots of fighters from Port Moresby came in to defend the place... we had lots of US fighters damaged while being bounced by the Oscars (HEIGHT anyone?) but once again the higher flying Spitfires then whiped the floor with the Japanese as the Spits also got the "dive"... funny, five minutes ago I read a statement "I´m not convinced that altitude is a big factor in the game" in a thread about the usual air routine discussions... people obviously sit in front of their replays with their eyes closed or seem to be totally ignorant... I really find that funny...

or the BS about coordination... it being funny has long been ended though, it´s just ridicoulos... the usual inability for the Zeroes escorting some IJAAF bombers at the same altitude to a target two hexes away... that´s ridicoulos... the whole routine is a joke as it plays out now...

sweep to Merauke (coming from Hollandia)... the Warhawks were bounced and nearly halve a dozen got damaged (funny to see ghost damage against bombers attacking bases without a single flak gun) but damage from enemy fighters doesn´t show up at all... interesting interpretation of FOW... outnumbering the enemy more than 2:1 the dive ended for the Zeroes and it then was more or less an equal fight with both sides losing the same number of aircraft...

and that´s of course the second sweep because the single IJAAF sentai can´t fly together... as usual?

while we didn´t take down as many Oscars over the target as I´ve hoped we nevertheless damaged a lot of them and they either crashed on their long way home or were written off. The Spits did most of the job but it seems their 2 cannon 4 MG armament is far inferior to the six packs the US fighters carry as we mostly only damaged the Oscars while the US fighters usually take them down if they get a shot at them. That was surprising but could have only happened by accident too...

Image

with the 20 Lightnings per month, the Corsair going online now, Aussie Spitfires (18 per month) for point defense and the P-40K taking the load of the combat we´re obviously in a position now to gain air superiority as long as we stay out of sweep range of 38000ft Tojos. That isn´t true for Burma and therefore we can still not contest the hundreds of enemy fighters/bombers there...

Happy new year! The Corsair is available for USMC squadrons now (30 per month) and Mk-14 dud rate is reduced to "only" 50%. Heavy bomber replacements will be trippled from 2/43 on and we will also get the B-25D (10 more per month than B-25C) which is rated as attack bomber, which means that our low nav attacks will be launched with full bomb loads. Rainer hasn´t been happy with my low nav attacks (with reduced loads) so far so I guess he won´t like the ones with full load either... [;)]

after my heavies encountered those Niks a couple of times I thought it would be more than worthy to send in the Lightnings as they should make short process with the Niks... we had the dive of course but for quite some time the battle didn´t look that one sided... in the end, the result was one sided though with 5 Niks shot down for no loss within the Lightning squadron... guess my two Lightning squadrons at Port Moresby will soon have my top aces...

now that was bad news... while I had my Lightnings fly sweeps a couple of times with my bombers not taking off (in 80% of the time for no reason) to attack empty targets today we had it reversed in every aspect... the Lightnings didn´t take off (perfect weather so it´s the old story about ordered flights just not taking off - WWII routine for squadrons to take a day off it seems) but the bombers did... to make everything worse, while the target was empty (or without Cap at least) the enemy had Cap there today, shredding our bombers...

I´m glad I´m only using heavy bombers for such attacks, I´ve got some 60 B-25C and a squadron Wellingtons available too but sending them in you could expect to lose a monthly replacement rate and while some funny guys on the forum say that the Allied can replace losses easily (like SBD losses - LOL ) I can asure you the Allied can´t replace any losses easily in 42. I will be for sure able to replace any heavy bomber losses from 2/43 on easily (with 48 USAAF heavy bombers per month) as they are tough and not easy to down, but Mitchells aren´t B-17 and with 30 per month it´s not funny to lose a monthly replacement rate in one screwed up attack when the game thought it would be cool to do something "funny" like not sending fighters...

we lose 5 B-17 in this attack which is quite a low loss rate considering how hard they had to fight and how many were damaged but losing 5 heavy bombers means 10 days of replacements...

knocked out Hollandia, level 2 airfield... Rainer hasn´t built up any of the bases on New Guinea or in the area and I wonder why... are the Japanese really that short of engineering units? I´m really advancing slowly as I don´t want to take the risk of losing carriers to be delayed more in the end so it´s not because I would advance faster than the enemy could build up bases...

there you go... minimum goal is to sink one freighter/tanker per day in 43 but I hope to get 1.5 per day as I´m far from employing all my subs (yet)... 500 merchants sunk by subs in 43 would be great...

for the game´s fun, I still have never looked at the Japanese side in AE so I really wonder how many ships the Japanese have... I´ve also told Rainer that the minimum goal would be 1 freighter sunk by subs per day and he replied that this would be ok for him! [X(] That would mean losing 365 freighters to subs in 43 isn´t that a big deal for him?

many of my US fighter squadrons still fly the same aircraft model than in 12/41... that says pretty much everything about how much the Allied get and no, this was a very conservative game by me and I´ve also not done that bad I guess considering the fact that the Japanese have had the lead in aircraft losses since mid 42... many front line squadrons fly the same outdated fighters as in Dec 41 and the West Coast is full of squadrons without any aircraft at all... I wonder how many IJAAF frontline units still fly Nates? Guess none at all and this has been probably true since early 42. I´ve encountered some Oscar Ic lately, but the rest of the IJAAF units either flies Oscar IIa or Tojos... clear evidence about the Japanese outproducing the Allied in their competetive aircraft types. I expect the same in 43, should change in 44 as the Allied then more or less gets superior aircraft only. Due to the altitude advantage and the range I would rate the Tojo as being superior to the P-40K which is my main USAAF fighter when looking at the replacement rate (and I get a whopping 60 of them per month - hardly 50% of my enemy´s Tojo production - and I surely can´t blame Rainer for doing anything out of whack with his production).

I set up separate ASW tf's in situations like these to go after the subs. I put an aggressive commander with high naval skill in charge.

Actually I´m doing the same, usually I´ve got two 4 DD ASW TFs following my carrier TFs and those ASW TFs get some competent commanders. I could put an admiral onto the task force leaders but I don´t as this seems just a bit too far off.

I was amazed about the number of ac in the air, Kavieng now got an airfield symbol, so I guess Rainer moved some fighter units to that base... meeting 18 enemy fighters in the air doesn´t mean a lot if you have the endless dive... the enemy was shot to pieces... for the loss of a damaged P-38 on the way home we take down over a dozen enemy fighters... having fighters in the Rabaul area is getting costly... considering the numbers involved, it sounds like a pretty one sided kill ratio...

we´ve chosen a new target for the Burma based Lightnings and encounter a hell a lot of Zeroes today but it was only a loopsided affair... we had the dive for 95% of the duration and shot down one Zero after another for not even having a single Lightning damaged during the bounce phase... in the short moment when the Lightnings stopped diving on the Zeroes the enemy was then able to damage halve a dozen of the P-38 which resulted in 4 being lost in the end... a dozen Zeroes fewer and the Lightnings would have had the endless dive and probably not one would have been lost, which (for me) once again shows just how powerful the dive is... in this case it changed a 23:0 into a 23:4, doesn´t sound a big difference but you have to consider that the enemy achieved the four kills in only a small percentage of the time when the Lightnings stopped diving on the enemy... it will just be a mess as soon as we can replace the P-40K with something being able to fly higher than the Japanese...

after the redone turn due to the latest happening of the fast transport TF Rainer told me he wouldn´t use any heavy cruisers anymore because while I agree to redo a turn due to a bug, it will be problematic over time as he more or less daily moves in a fast transport TF and that puts every turn into threat of being redone and I wouldn´t like that at all if e.g. I would hit a CV or something... he seems to be still risking his CLs but they´re not more than big DDs anyway...

Your oponent has really ramped up his production losses are massive..His Nate losses are very low meaning he replaced the air frames quickly which is costly..

Now in scenario 1 he would be in deep problems in terms of resource as he will have burned through his store and will be relying entirely on what is shipped.

Not sure in Scenario 2 , the double pilots will cost even more . It depends on the extra resources available in scenario 2 he may be in deep trouble in 44. Esp if you can get some Air bases to assist your subs with search in mid 43.

hovering over Japan doesn´t really bring up massive aircraft production though, I would say he´s only producing halve of what usually was produced in WITP. The usual types, Tojos, Zeroes, OscarII, Helen, Betties, Kate and Val are the ones with the highest production number but none going into the hundreds. But if you produce 140-150 Tojos a month for example then it´s not that much of a problem to have lost 420 in early 43 because production has been running since mid 42. That would mean some 400 left from production in that time frame. Really ramping up production into hundreds of airframes of a certain type (if possible) is useful to swap out types really fast in the frontlines but in the long run you come along with 150 quite good (200 later on perhaps) I guess.

had both P-38G squadrons from Port Moresby in action today... this squadron claims 8 enemies over the target... The Oscars have been set to max alt but that doesn´t help them at all when the Lightnings are coming in at 39.000ft...

I´ve decided to launch a quite dangerous mission. As we can´t touch Rabaul in a direct attack with our airforce (well I can send the 50 P-38 and the 120 4Es from Port Moresby but losses would be fatal) I´ve ordered more or less the whole USN to move onto Rabaul to bombard the place. I´m sure I´m able to nuke the place, detection level has long been 9/10. The problem will be the day when my task forces move into position the day before the bombardment(s) will happen. I´m not sure yet but the plan is to have a fast BB surface combat TF (with the lowest TF number) move in to clear the way of any potential IJN threat, followed by two CA/CL task forces, together some two and a halve dozen cruisers to plaster the base. Using the BB TF (a modern US BB and BC Repulse due to her crew´s night experience) means having to take position 8 hexes SW of Rabaul while using only the cruisers would mean 9 hexes. Both options have pros and cons. Being at 8 hexes would mean being in Tojo range (only with drop tanks though and I doubt Rainer keeps his Tojos equipped with drop tanks by default) which would really increase the potential threat of an airattack. Going into position 9 hexes SW of Rabaul would mean no Tojos on escort of a potential bomber attack but would also mean my cruisers could run into trouble when BB Nagato and company are close by for example. I´m employing all my available USN fleet carriers (except Saratoga, she´s on transit after finishing repairs), backed up by a British CV and halve a dozen USN CVEs (also those with replenishment squadrons - the bombers were sent to Townsville and the fighter squadrons will fly Cap). All in all, we field something like 600 carrier based aircraft, probably nearly 300 fighters (all Wildcats).

I guess I will go with the option of sending in a BB TF, would mean being 8 hexes off Rabaul. My three carrier TFs will be covered by a strong BB surface combat TF and I will also have 250 land based fighters (two hexes away) that will fly LRCAP. When thinking about the absolutely succesful fights of my carriers against LBA during the Merauke operation (when I had some 150 carrier based fighters less) then I´m quite confident that every strike launched from Rabaul would be trashed when it comes in the day we go into position as we will have everything in one hex. Our TFs won´t all be in the same hex the day after the bombardment but then I´m expecting the enemy base to be neutralized. Rabaul fields reported 550 aircraft of all different types but due to it being a level 6 airfield, I doubt that Rainer has got many more than 300 aircraft there, mostly being Tojos I guess. When I should guess then I would say the total number of aircraft coming in on a naval strike at 8 hexes won´t be more than 70-100 fighters (Zeroes and Oscar II) and 50-75 bombers. But that´s the absolute maximum and that´s surely something we could deal with, especially because I doubt we would see a fully combined strike.

Of course, if we really would be unlucky, KB and a heavy surface combat TF could be in position but that would only happen by a very rare accident I guess as Rainer probably isn´t aware of what is coming up.
