Clarification from Dave

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

Clarification from Dave

Post by Grim.Reaper »

Dave,

Hello. Quick question from something I just posted at wargamer, wasn't sure which place you were checking.

But you recently posted the following as it related to flank attacks.

"Actually, Mark, I addded flanking options to attacks a while back. You should have come back sooner! ;) The flanking code is ignored, however, if you specify an FUP. Otherwise, it will develop three route options and choose what it thinks the best. It will also try and avoid any other assault routes being conducted by other forces. Neat hey! :) "

With this in mind, I responded with a few questions to help make me understand.

I'm not sure I fully understand this point. Sounds like if I just select a target and attack, versus selecting a FUP before attacking, the AI considers 3 different methods to attack, which includes flanking. What is the advantage of a FUP then if you can't flank attack from there? Should we just ignore FUP? I'm a little confused so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I had this epxerience with the tutorial I gave one attack an FUP and didnt bother with the other...the other attack went in the the enemies rear\flank...a joy to behold.

Agreed...this sounds like good flexibility that I did not know existed. If you want to micro-manage and setup the attack, you set the FUP. If you want the AI to figure out those details, just select the place to attack and it will figure it out. Best of both worlds with this feature!

I'm glad this question popped up since I really didn't know it worked like this. It certainly will be a feature that I will be using more from now on though.

When you watch the Ai do a flank attack for you and you didn't know about this feature like happened to me it's jaw dropping.

REMEMBER it happened for me because I had sent one battalion with an FUP for a frontal attack I sent the other battalion with no FUP for an attack...thats when it worked...the battalion with no FUP crossed a River and hit them from the rear\flank.
