supplyline cut off

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

supplyline cut off

Post by jnpoint »

I have a problem: I have a unit, which supply is cut off, but there are no enemy units between my unit and the supply depot?

It had earlier been cut off, but then I pulled it back behind my own line (more than 6 hours ago).

Hmm ...

(1) Well, unless the game runs out or you surrender, it is hard to know if your supply line is really cut.

(2) Remember that the supply LINES display and/or INFO box for supply are not updated in real time like everything else. Rather in order to conserve CPU, these are updated when the last convoy was attempted I believe. Thus, the data you are seeing could be anywhere from 2-24hrs old. I arrived at that since with emergency requests a unit could resupplied about every 2 hours. However, with regular resupply (and night time only set by the designer) that would be 24 hours.

(3) The message that tells you about resupply successes and failures are real time.

I hope that helps.

I wish the average battle lasted longer than 80 hours, so running out of supply was a truly frightening prospect...
As is, it's just an annoyance. Not worth tiring your guys out trying to get back to your own lines, as it takes about 24 hours to fully rest.

Yes, some longer campaigns would be nice.
By the way, just after I wrote about 'supplyline cut off' I got a message 'supply on way', just before the scenario ended. - so sorry, false alarm :)

Without supply your advance will come to a grinding halt soon enough. I have not yet had much time with BFTB yet, but I did play alot of COTA. Dried out FJ regiments in hot Mediterranean climate was not a pretty business, and that happend just after 24 hours. I can imagine that a armoured company without ammunition and fuel will be just as useless in a snow covered temperate setting.

The logistical art of this game (and of course the operational art in general) is to retain some kind of force economy. Pushing your units (especially valuable ones) to the brink of exhaustion is not good practice. Then they as you say need to rest for 24hrs and are in this scope indeed spent for the remainder of the battle.

The supply problem (keeping lines of communication) in this current setting is however not that big issue as it was in the fragmented reality of airborne assaults (HTTR/COTA).

The other day there was some discussion of supply lines ... when the information for lines and unit info box is computed ... messages.

I had stated that lines and unit info boxes for supply is not updated in realtime, but only when an event occurs. However, any message your receive like "supplies arrived" or "transport column suffered losses" is realtime.

I present this screen shot (COTA playing today as the Allies "Tanks at Platamon".) [BTW, map graphics are Robin's "back to paper" for COTA.]

We see the line and info box. This is between the engineers to the North at Platamon and the base to the South at Aigame. Aside from the red line and the red box, you can see the yellow message at top. That's the real proof that the engineers are cutoff.
