RE: Downfall v2 AAR
Andy: No, I d/n send both X Corps and V Amphip Force in for the initial landing. I
changed to use X Corps as the initial force and will follow-up w/ V Amphip. X Corps
seemed to have somewhat more assault value. Also, I may not land at Kagoshima.
I d/n think I can get my mine sweeps there w/o prohibitive losses to them, so I
am now planning to push all thru Kanoya. I will, however, leave a substantial force
for exploitation. If the ai moves all to Kanoya, I may then land at Kagoshima. I prefer
a wide front, but....
JeffK: I had not thought about the use of smaller landing craft. Interesting idea. I may try
that at a "target of opportunity".
Grit: I took Formosa some time ago with the idea of basing 4 engine bombers at the three
major airfields there. It turns out that I'm having supply difficulties in keeping the "heavies" in the air. If you are planning on the same approach, be sure you build
up sufficient supplies or it might be a wasted effort. Neutralizing the Jap. airbases with
air attack might be more economical, although having all those aircraft just sitting around
d/n seem right.
I started moving the invasion force late last night and will have a post(s) shortly. Heavy
air action. I will update the composition of the invasion force at that time.
Thx all for your interest.

RE: Downfall v2 AAR
Hi All: The attached map shows the composition of the initial invasion force going into
Kanoya. It also shows the location of the first air attacks on the fleet. Details of the action
on the next post. Should also mention that I have invaded Palembang with two Indian
divs out of Singapore.
Map corr: bombardment force incl 8 BBs, not 4 BBs

RE: Downfall v2 AAR
Here is a sampling of the air attacks against the invasion force. I've also included an
interesting encounter between US CVEs rtng from Okinawa and A Jap. surface force.
CV Lexington took 22 sys dmg, 10 flt dmg and 4 eng dmg. 5 CVEs sunk.
The attacks went on and on and my CAP(including lba from Okinawa and Amami)
were stretched to the limit.

The Japanese AAA losses seem incredibly low. Every USN ship had at least a 20 mm in every empty space on deck if not a 40 mm by this point. Is this typical for what you have seen?

Here is my Intel report from Oct 23, 1945. One reason the AAA total is so low is that very few planes actually get through the CAP to get hit by AAA. At least it seems like that in my game.

RE: Downfall v2 AAR
Hi vettim89 and Grit: I had the same thought re: low Jap. losses due to AAA. I'm not sure
that it is due to so few getting thru the CAP. If one looks at my combat summaries, the number of planes downed by CAP vs number attacking and shot down by AAA doesn't
seem to indicate that. The next day's attacks, which I'll post tomm, shows 28 downed by
AAA and 599 air/air. I think there has been some discussion about AAA in another thread.
Total Jap. sorties for that day was 2963, I think.
Thx.

RE: Downfall v2 AAR
I think you start to get a lot of aborted sorties due to their pretty low morale by now, you've taken down about 5000 aircraft at this point.

RE: Downfall v2 AAR
Intel Report for 011846.
All troops ashore at Kanoya in good order except 10 Corps Engineers who are struggling
to get off damaged APs. As advertised, there is a noticeable diff in the speed at which
APAs/AKAs unload vs APs/AKs.
Note that Jap. sorties have dropped from 3172 on 1/16/46, to 2427 this date. My bombing
of airfields and engine plants may be a factor. My own sorties have gone from 3126 to 3579. I have increased the % of ea unit flying.
3 Jap. a/c downed by AAA.
My intention is to bombard next turn and then start the ground attacks. I have an aviation
base force enroute to establish base when Kanoya falls.

RE: Downfall v2 AAR
Holy carnage on an industrial scale, Batman! I like this AAR and I'm considering giving Downfall a go as a result.
I was wondering if you could post a screenie of your top pilots and also aircraft losses.
Thanks,
CC
