Looks like I´ve found an explanation why I´ve suffered quite a lot of damaged subs since the beginning of 43:

Prior to 1944, Allied crews perform ASW functions during daylight at 114% of their crew rating,
and at night at 150% of their crew rating (except for British crews which get no bonus at night
as they generally already have extra high night experience). Prior to 1943, Japanese crews
perform their ASW functions at 67% of their crew rating, while in 1943 and thereafter they
perform at 80% of their crew rating.

This seems to be the reason why I´ve got more crippled subs in 1/43 already than I´ve suffered over months before 1/43. It´s only a 13% increase but the effect is real. My subs still don´t seem to get sunk but every crap ASW vessel seems to be able to achieve a direct hit which is enough to send every sub home. The subs are patched up in no time in port but the transfer time costs you a month.

ORIGINAL: castor troy

The Japanese had not even 100 fighters on Cap and something like 90 of them actually engaged my incoming strike. I had 240 Wildcats on Cap and something like 80 engaged the incoming strike.

It´s obviously definetely meaningless in scenario 2, not only in regards to pilot losses, but also to plane losses. It´s harder for me to replace the SBD losses than for the Japanese to replace Zeroes, Kates or Vals it seems. None of my SBD squadrons in the whole war has suffered any real losses (got three USMC squadrons equipped with SBDs and the USN of course) and the pool is now dried up. No fights for them for 12 months, one engagement, empty.

Of course I can compare it with the PH strike, just like I can compare it with any other CV strike of real life or hypothetical ones. No CV force could do what the CVs can do in the game. Or are we now talking about CVs having 100% of their strike aircraft armed on deck to launch alltogether. It´s not a Japanese thing or an Allied thing, that´s why I´ve said, carrier based strikes.

I stand by what I´ve said. Trying to make Cap more realistic is a good way, trying to make land based strikes more realistic is good too (no matter what I think about the outcome) but not touching CV based strikes in conjunction with changing the other two things is false IMO. Or do you really think that the 505 aircraft in the Japanese strike or the 325 aircraft in the Allied strike would be realistic? In WITP we were always told the reason why we see such huge strikes is because it´s for the whole AM or PM phase and this "single" strike represents a series of strikes. Now that shouldn´t be true in AE anymore (as can be seen with the land based "(un)coordination".

Yes , they had 90% of CAP up and facing you but they did have surprise with the first strike , that said consideirng the warning you had very little cap on . Now this did happen historically a few times ( clark on Dec 8 and Coral sea to name a few) . So there is a roll in the game to simualte this and yopu got a bad one - im just trying to work out what affects it ,commander , weather , seperate TFs ? Cap settings , coordination penalty by more than x cvs per tf ?

I agree the size of an individual strike and it is really 2+ strikes ( eg PH is 2 am strikes historically ) which gets resolved as 1 and an afternoon strike would be the 3rd PH strike if it came ( which due to the distance is rare - as was historical) and since it is 2+ strikes more Cap would be up for the second strike , reducing any surprise.

A 505 single strike is unrealistic but multiple strikes which gets resolved as a single strike due to a game abstraction im ok with. Though i wish it used the same resolution as land breaking it to sub strikes ( which is really what would happen against different TF , which would also stress the CAP coordination and make some attacks more leaky while others are suicide - just like midway where the low TB take teh CAP away when the DBs come in) . It would be nice to see in a patch.

god, I´m unable to defend the West Coast against IJN subs and it´s 1/43... those YP don´t work as ASW forces, they got DCs but do nothing, no idea if by design or if it´s a bug.. I will have to withdraw them and replace all those ASW TFs with SCs or something like that...

Tuna missed (strange kind of bad luck since 1/1/43 considering we more or less have hit with every shot before 43) and takes enough damage to be sent to the shipyard... the effect of the ASW experience increase of IJN vessels in 1/43 seems to be more severe to us than our reduced dud rate to 50% to the Japanese...

have ordered strategic bombing of the 200 resource centers at Haiphong, 70 are damaged... the reason for such an attack isn´t as much damaging the resource centers but to force the enemy to disperse his fighter assets if he wants to defend his resources... there should be so many round though that I doubt it´s really necessary to defend the ones currently in heavy bomber range...

[X(] now that was bad news again, it´s amazing that the Japanese are able to put up Cap over Rabaul because the base should be cratered... the base for sure has a damage of 100% so I wonder how the enemy fighters are maintained... after my naval nuke bombardment I thought I would be easily able to keep Rabaul closed but without the need of having a working base (seems like the enemy only needs a runway) we´re going to run into problems here...

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring DD Minegumo

now it´s for sure that both won´t survive... while the enemy DDs were already dead in the water, the Vengeances proved to be really accurate in bombing naval targets, bomb after bomb hit the destroyers... looks like we have a new wonder weapon for short range anti shipping strikes, while not really long ranged or being a flying tank, the Vengeance carries four bombs (2x500lb + 2x250lb) on normal range or 2x500lb on extended range which makes a dive bomber really a threat as they more or less can´t miss in dive bombing with 4 bomb die rolls... all of them got 70 nav bomb skill, so coming close to my dive bomber bases without a really heavy Cap now is even more dangerous...

lots of Mitchells from Buna attack Yubari (without an escort) at Kavieng, I guess Yubari was part of the fast transport TF going to Finshhaven but due to the destroyers getting damaged, Yubari retired alone to Kavieng... I doubt Rainer would send the small cruiser without an escort on a mission to Kavieng when he definetely knows that the area between Truk and Rabaul is flooded with subs...

heavy rain, all bombers miss...

but the small follow on wave achieves a hit... also troops aboard Yubari which supports my guess about Yubari having been part of the Finshhaven reinforcement attempt... sending more troops to Finshhaven means losing them...

slowly recovering from the shock of suffering a horrible defeat in our carrier engagement, we look forward again. Looks like it will be possible to save Yorktown and Lexington (if not hit by a sub) but they´re going to be out of the war for a looong time. With the high tonnage of Lexington, I guess the ship won´t be ready before early 44 again, Yorktown can be repaired in Sydney´s port but that will also take a year or probably longer...

the end result of our carrier engagement looks like to be: the Groote Eylandt reinforcement failed, CV Enterprise sunk, CVs Yorktown and Lexington heavily damaged and out of the war for at least a year (if they make it to a big shipyard), 2 BBs sunk, another two BBs moderately to heavily damaged, 4 CVEs sunk, 1 CA and 1 DD sunk... minor damage on some more ships, 300 carrier based aircraft lost, F4F-4 and SBD pools depleted when I fill up my carrier based squadrons again...

my intel daily brings up news about CVs Hiyo and Junyo sunk, just to contradict the next day again... in the best case, those two second class CVs are sunk with Kaga, Shokaku and CVL Ryujo damaged (from light to moderate damage). The enemy also lost around 300 carrier based aircraft. Even in the best case, I would rate it as a clear Japanese victory, it delays the Allied by at least 6 - 8 months in going forward, we can only attack some secondary targets in the best case. It was the perfect moment for an attack on my carriers and it could not have gone much better for the Japanese I guess, very well done Rainer. [&o] With the Japanese CV reinforcements and the time to repair the damaged CVs the Japanese will have more CVs available when we could expect the next big engagement between the two enemy carrier fleets, but I´m going to have to wait for my big reinforcements between June and August...

Sub slips beneath the waves

one of the subs just sitting off the West Coast... it doesn´t happen really often that I move capitol ships in and out from the WC but it seems most of the time I do, the TFs meet enemy subs which I really don´t like... in this case the escorts do their job (amazingly), engage the sub before it gets off a shot and to my surprise, the DDs actually take out the bugger... BB Washington spent months in San Francisco´s shipyard after being hit by two torps (yeah, off the West Coast [8|]) right after she arrived in theatre... with a modern BB sunk during the recent carrier engagement, Washington is sent to Australia...

something I never understood was the psychic ability of the WITP engine to adjust the number of escorts for a strike dependend on the fact if Cap is over the target or not... the same is true for AE, there has been no change in this more than strange "ability". You can see very small numbers of escorts over months going with the bombers to the same target when there´s no Cap. Then you send in some fighters to fly Cap and the AI gives the player (no matter what side) the psychic feature of sending a couple of times more escorts with his strike as soon as there are enemy fighters there. While there were usually only one or at best two dozen fighters with the bombers, out of a sudden (what a surprise - NOT) the stupid engine (not so stupid for the one that takes the advantage of it) sends nearly five dozen unbeatable Tojos with the bombers exactly the day I´ve moved in fighters to LRCAP the target.

You really have to wonder if I´m the only one to notice those things. [>:] Believe me, Rainer surely hasn´t suddenly decided to set 57 Tojos on escort instead of the 9-17 usually were going out. It´s one of those strange behaviours of the engine, but that´s not an AE feature, that´s ever been there in WITP alread. The result? The result is a no brainer, I was already sure about it before the first aircraft was shot down...

all our fighters being above the enemy, we got the dive, which at least meant we weren´t shredded by the Tojos, but to my amusement, the dive didn´t last longer than 30 sec at best and then you can imagine what happens when you meet the Japanese Corsair of WWII. Would the Tojo in real life have been wha it is in the game, boy, that could really have meant trouble for the Allied. For the loss of two Tojos, they take down 16 of my fighters. Only a 8:1, who´s the one who always talkes about Hurricanes being equal to Tojos (or even better? lol). The usual story, all my pilots are skill 70, I don´t use anything else on the front line. But that doesn´t help you flying a crappy fighter that is 50 mph slower than the enemy or the enemy being five times more maneuverable when thinking about the US fighters. It was a slaughter of course and the only thing that made it being equal in air losses today was the fact that my fighters got a post air attack phase when they shot down a dozen bombers. Pre bombing run, not one of the figthers made it through the Tojos.

I would trade the 30 Corsairs I get immedietely for the 130 Tojos the Japanese produce per month. I couls also offer the useless, outdated Hurricanes as a bonus... the Brits won´t get any better fighter until late 43 so they will keep on flying their outdated aircrafts...

got two ASW TFs operating against that sub but they fail to achieve something... the Glen equipped sub spots our TFs in this area daily... it´s just amazing that a Glen launchend from a sub not having any patrol archs for sure spots shipping in this area in 9 out of 10 cases but land based patrols given search archs are by far not as effective when huge convoys are coming their ways... this, together with the fact that my land based patrols continuesly spot shipping OUTSIDE of their archs lead me to the suspicion that they don´t work at all or not as you would expect them to work... as others already mentioned, I´m thinking about ignoring search archs completely... perhaps this would also reduce my op losses during the most dangerous mission on Earth called "nav search"...

funny how "coordinated" the sweep from two hexes range is coming in... ridicoulos... while I sure can live with how bomber strikes usually turn out in terms of coordination, the fact that sweeps seem to have a special rule for coordination is just funny...

we finally capture Lae and the enemy is forced to retreat to Finshhaven before he could march there... the enemy took quite some losses and as soon as the rest of our combat engineers arrives at Lae we´re going to pursuit the enemy to destroy them... we took Buna and the bases around Lae by overland assault... took some time but worked...

Bad luck Chris, I seem to remember someone being on the wrong end of a CV battle like that near Darwin in our WITP game[;)]

But seriously, I have never seem a 500 a/c strike go in one go from the KB in my game, maybe two 250 a/c strikes but never an uber strike like that, just bad dice rolls I guess.

Re scenario 2 and pilot training, to be honest I do not think it makes any difference on Jap pilot quality. I currently have thousands of trainee pilots sitting in the pools doing nothing, and at the beginning of each month I am being hit with a 100,000 HI cost for the privilage. Maybe you get a few extra training sqds to put them in over scen 1, but thats about it.

However, as you stated it keeps the Jap player competitive longer into the game....so maybe not such a bad thing after all........

Hi Paul

Yeah, good ol WITP days... [:D] But Darwin was different as I lured your carrier ac into a Cap trap while here it was a one on one of carrier aircraft with everything else being a clear advantage of the Allied forces. Unfortunetely I got my head handed and other than the usual "bad die roll" comment I can´t think of what really went wrong. Of course the "never go with the IJN one on one" comment is also true.

I doubt that Rainer will run out of aircraft or pilots before very late in the war when there´s nothing left of Japan anyway so I expect his airforce to be top notch and competitive until I really get hundreds of first line fighters when I don´t have to care about my fighters going in in bits and pieces. Rainer told me it wasn´t much of a problem to replace the 300 KB aircraft and pilots after he lost them at Sydney and that was kind of a shock as it´s definetely a problem for me to replace any of my aircraft (not just SBDs for example). And I´m saying this after having been in the lead by a thousand ac shot down for over halve a year already. With Rainer keeping his assets behind the frontline until he gets a chance to hit me hard I expect this game to stay interesting until well into 44. For the near future, I´m quite handicapped of course with only having three USN CVs that are backed up by two CVEs and a British CV soon, but the British CV is nothing but an armored CVL.

Sorry Castor Troy for off topic here... [;)] Miller, 100 000 HI points? [X(]
I also play second scen. PBEM, but pay about 30 - 40 000 HIPs a month...
I previously thought it is paid for those idle in the reserve pool and tried to transfer as many as possible to operating units, but it seems the x5 points is paid for those in quarters (months... 8 quarters, id est. 4 for Army pilots and 4 for Navy of about 800 pilots in each = 32 000 HIPs).
Maybe take some elite pilots out of TRACOM to prevent accelerating the trainees?

True.
As a JFB I actually wish to have less pilots in reserve pools!
Now in December '42, with more than 3000 pilots within the immediate reach od reserve pool, I do not afraid of losing even 500 pilots a month. With some squadrons set as trainers your opponent will definetely not complain about the skills, only the overall experience of those pilots might drop some.
Better prepare for a long war... [;)]

well, if the next carrier engagement goes the same way the last one did, then the war will last until the end of the 50s...[:D]

empty tanker convoy on it´s way to pick up fuel for the fleet... it´s insane, I´ve been hauling fuel around with all my tankers since day one, haven´t suffered any severe tanker losses and am NOT feeding Australia´s industry with fuel and yet I´m still running dry... I can´t keep my fleet supplied in Australia, don´t know what to do, have even started using those big xAKs with fuel capacity to move fuel from Cape Town months ago but that also doesn´t help a lot... I´ve thought that one year into the war and using all my available tankers would give me something like 500.000+ fuel for my fleet in Australia but one again I´ve thought wrong...

three sweeps today to pick off leaking Cap from Rabaul... after my naval bombardment nuke I´ve thought it wouldn´t be a problem to keep Rabaul suppressed but as soon as the airfield gets some percentage repaired the enemy moves in fighters... obviously never really mattered that the base must have had 100% damage, the Tojos must get repaired with thin air...

hopefully we´re going to suppress Munda from now on, didn´t work in the past... suppressing enemy airfields proves far harder than I´ve thought, I would need twice the number of 4Es to suppress all the targets I would like to... and then they would have to fly non stop...

in the end, while only trying to engage leaking Cap all the time, we take down a dozen Tojos for only one Lightning lost... but Tojo production is high enough, as is the pilot replacement, so I doubt that is hurting the Japanese at all... I don´t want to imagine what it would mean to lose a dozen Lightnings in a single day...

ordered both P-38 squadrons to sweep the same target, the outcome is the usual one... can´t one of the responsible open his eyes please and change this BS? No sane man here on the forum can actually think that´s working how it should when he read the usual books we all have... PM being a level 9 airfield isn´t able to launch two fighter squadrons at the same time to fly to the same target? Seriously, this just stinks...

or this BS? One squadron, 16 ac going in first, then the 2 rest? Mega stinks and is just stupid... it wasn´t the norm to screw things up in real life, but the air routine (altitude issue and coordination stupidity) is totally screwed up in the game... a pity, considering the potential... [:@]

and I have yet to see a detailed AAR that proves me wrong in terms of the altitude issue and the coordination issue... wonder why... it´s probably me ignoring those AARs where it works...

highlight of the day... PBYs have spotted shipping at Wewak and our Mitchells sortied on a nav strike from the newly built up airfields around Lae... first I was pretty much shocked to see 14 Zeroes backed up by 4 Rufes as the Mitchells aren´t that hard to down, but I noticed that they nearly performed like 4Es today, mostly driving off the enemy fighters and they had no real problem breaking through Cap to attack the two big IJN mine layers... don´t know if that´s a minelaying or supply mission, if I had to guess, I would say it´s a supply mission (can they carry supply?)... both ships were easily sunk during excellent weather and we only lose one Mitchell over the target with another one written off... one crew was lost over the target and a Zero was claimed shot down by our gunners... a nice attack...

following the Mitchells, the Australian Beauforts launch from the same staging area but other than some fighters on Cap they couldn´t spot anything, the two ships were already sunk... losing precious Beaufort torp bombers with trained crews hurts...

the enemy moved out his fighters and the bombers hit Rabaul hard... at the end of the series of attacks, I expect the base and runway being near 100% damaged but I bet it will only be a couple of days to see Tojos flying above the base again...

SS RO-61 attacking LCT-63 on the surface

we´re employing a good dozen LCTs to carry supplies between Milne Bay and Lae and one of the landing crafts is sunk by gunfire from an IJN sub... the LCTs can carry 150 supplies each, makes them excellently suited for frontline supply missions, unfortunetely the number of LCTs is very limited at the moment and those other landing craft that mostly carry troops are useless for this task...

Hanoi´s resources are knocked out... nearly nothing left of the 20 resource centers... I´m already thinking about employing guerilla tactics with the 50 heavy bombers in Burma, moving them to China to bomb important Japanese resource or HI sites to force the enemy to employ more fighters for defensive task in China, but it also could result in a big style IJA offensive in China and that´s not really what I want to see... our supplies are building up now in China due to the liberation of Burma and I´ve started building forts again, so I guess the first strategic bombing run out of China is only a matter of time...

I don´t know how it can be screwed up enough to get these results but my sweeping Corsairs came in with the bombers, nice, they do far better than being on escort and of course were diving on the enemy until nothing of the Zeroes was left... also employing B-17F to lay mines now, should make it hard for the enemy to send ships to bases in medium range to the frontline... two squadrons of B-17F won´t lay that many mines but I´m sure it triggers some reaction from the enemy... the Lightnings unfortunetely were set to "escort" and being on escort and not having the altitude advantage means bad news for our fighters, even if they only face Zeroes which usually got no chance against our advanced fighters...

losing two Corsairs and two Lightnings in one day means three times more losses than replacements... not something you want to see as the Allied when you personally know every single advanced fighter you´ve got in your frontline squadrons... it´s 2/43 and in total I´ve got four Ligthning squadrons - one is totally understrenght - and one Corsair squadron... and that´s it in terms of competitive land based fighter squadrons... those have to face probably 500 Tojos on the map, so it´s not really surprising that I never try to attack bases directly with my airforce...

now that´s somethig I do care about... I was shocked to see Betties launching from Munda again, recon still reports the base being heavily damaged... I somehow screwed up the Cap setting at Milne, there wasn´t a single fighter (out of 100+) in the air to meet the unescorted bombers... thank god the agile destroyers managed to evade the torps... there´s also a modern US CL in that TF... am planning to either make Port Moresby (port level 5) or Milne Bay (port level 6) as my primary fleet base in this area... with the Solomons and Rabaul still being in Japanese hands, I tend to pick Port Moresby as that base is just far easier to defend and it also got a level 9 airfield...

op loss report, today four HudsonIII on nav search crashed... wow, I would prefer to fly a B-24 in combat against heavy enemy fighter resistance over flying a bomber/patrol on nav search that isn´t engaged...
