New Guy Question

Eagle Day to Bombing of the Reich is a improved and enhanced edition of Talonsoft's older Battle of Britain and Bombing the Reich. This updated version represents the best simulation of the air war over Britain and the strategic bombing campaign over Europe that has ever been made.

New Guy Question

Post by ool »

Just got the game for father's day and am going through the learning curve. In the BOB 1940 scenarios has anyone any comments on the advantages or disadvantages of moving the German air units from their starting air bases?

As long as you dont overuse the airfields, there are no drawbacks in having especially the Bf 109 units closer to their operational areas. They will have to use less time, and gas, in flying back and forth, and will be able to escort the bombers deeper.

Repair rates the devil is always in the details. Thanks.

Is that based on the number of Gruppen or the total number of planes on that base?
Also: Are Recon Gruppen counting towards Overstacking as well?
I noticed that for example Stavanger starts the BOB Campaign 1940 with 7 Gruppen (3 Bomber, 1 Fighter, 4 Recon).
I guess, I should move at least the Recon units.

IIRC in the original BoB the bases had a certain capability to repair and maintain aircraft. Look at the details of your groups; you'll be able to see the ready, under repair and iirc also under maintenance aircraft.

I do generally move Bf 109 forward for best range/endurance over England and I shift a bit the excellent Ju 86 recons and sometimes also a Ju 88 wing to Norway (for surprise attacks).

Only the Do 17 bombers have a somewhat limited range, all others have much excess range and do not require any forward-basing. The only benefit would be that the shorter flight back means less damaged bombers crash before landing (unless the code somehow destines them to crash no matter what?).
