Current Allied operations:

A light CVTF is working up in the Indian Ocean. Several light and one heavy SAG are operating out of Batavia. A light SAG is operating out of Rabaul. A light SAG is headed towards Eniwetok with a bombardment mission. A super-heavy SAG is headed for Kwajalein with a bombardment mission. Three CVTFs are moving into position to hit Majuro with air strikes. Midway is being built up as a forward submarine base, and Johnston as a fleet anchorage. Wake is to be developed as a seaplane base. In the south, Noumea, Pago Pago, Townsville, and Brisbane are being developed as forward bases, and Milne Bay has been occupied. In the Indian Ocean, Christmas Island is being built up as a fleet anchorage, and preparations are underway to pull the 8th Australian Division out of Malaya.

Gosh, Harry, sounds like you read the book. Seem to be playing the game in the manner intended. Looking forward to more.

Not criticising, but suggest you may wish to include some screenshots with circles and arrows to show wtfo. I note that many wargamers follow visual clues, so text over a screenshot (of something important) might bring it home better. Not too many people can glean operational tricks from text.

btw, tell Bliztk to post more. Some of us can maybe help him figure out how to put your shorts in the wringer (without violating confidences, of course).[;)]

I think I've spotted the KB in the China Sea. I'm moving my SAGs up to create a barrier patrol. The ships at Singapore are clearing out to Sabang.

The KB finally gets its act together and hits Singapore. The shipping flees, losing a few stragglers. The HDMLs sortie and absorb the attention of a lot of Vals. Alor Star and Cabanatuan fall to the Japanese.

Very interesting AAR. ONe thing that intrigues me is your attempting to hit the Japanese fleet at night. At that time of the war, were not the Japanese much better at night sea battles than the Allies? Or is it because the Japanese fleet in question did not have sufficient surface ship support?

Most of the Allied ships in those TFs had more than two years of wartime experience at that point. Carriers were day-time ships for most of the war and were hardly ready for a night-time surface engagement in any case. Their light screens had their hands full protecting them, and could hardly operate offensively against Allied surface action groups (SAGs).

The Combined Fleet appears at Mersing, with the KB one hex offshore. This is to support a landing of the 7th Division. It's either overkill or a reprise of Anzio. Now I know where the Japanese fleet is. LBA based at Singapore responds.

SS I-18 sneaks into Noumea Harbor and attacks a small freighter on the surface. Given that there are significant ASW assets in the area, this may get interesting.

The Japanese capture Tavoy.

December 26 1941

The KB, Combined Fleet, and transports disappeared from the radar near Singapore on Christmas Day, so I gave my SAGs a day off and extended my searches. The Combined Fleet then reappeared off Singapore on the 26th, with fighters from seven KB squadrons providing air cover. It appears I can relax a bit.

Ships stuck in Manila Bay have been sneaking out, with losses...

Japanese LCUs pursue retreating Allied forces in Northern Malaya.

Japanese deliberate attacks at Manila and Clark Field repulsed with heavy losses.

I decided to give Force Z a day in Soerabaya. If the KB comes south, I'll get enough warning to challenge it. If the Combined Fleet comes with it, I'll duck out to the Indian Ocean.

The Japanese continue to mop up northern Malaya. The KB is spotted at Mersing. The battleships of the Combined Fleet are missing. No action in the Philippines, China, or Burma.

I wonder how my opponent would react if I were to do a port strike on Tokyo?

I suspect it would shatter your raiders. You need to do lots of pilot training (I assume you have that underway), and the weak spot is that there are hardly any USN squadrons available to train USN pilots. So, a raid on Tokyo or any port with likely good flak (I'm presuming meek fighter cover) would be risking a months long handicap for what gain?

Showing up near Tokyo and taking out any convoy that happened to be available could raise the same hell with him without the air group-risk. All the other risks pertain, of course.
