Downfall II - tweaked a bit!

Post by JeffroK »

I've done a little tweaking to AndyMacs Downfall scenario, some fixes, some personal preferences. (It would be good if a JFB could tweak the empire troops a bit too.)

The RAAF has been given citizenship in New Zealand, havent worked out how to make them appear as Aussies yet.

Australian Army has had a Regiment of Churchill VII replace a Matilda II Rgt, 4th Armd Bde has M3 Grants which will upgrade to M4 Shermans.

US Army 37mm AT guns have been replaced by 57mm AT guns, likewise any Brit/Indian unit with 2 pdrs now has 6 pdrs.

US Army & Marine AA has their 37mm AA replaced by 40mm Bofors, 75mm & 3" AA replaced by 90mm (90mm DP in Defense Bns) Some have had their quad 50cal replaced by 20mm Oerlikon.

Air defense units have had their Soundetectors(A) replaced by RADAR, mixed them around.
RN BPF Carriers have the right aircraft equipping their squadrons, except my list says Seafire or Hellcat and not the model, shared them around.
I also believe some ships are in an early war fitout, I'm not sure how to fix this but its on my list.

Aircraft which could carry A-G rockets have them allocated, I think they are a bit powerful but I'll try a game before downgrading them.
I gave my F8 Bearcats 4 x 20mm cannon, its about time the yanqui learned how to make them work at altitude!!

Some bases like Peleliu & Brunei have been upgraded to hold the ships and aircraft available at start, in addition I upgraded some Aleutian bases to provide an option to do a right hook.

I'll see how it runs, with a different strategy to last time (those CVE are going to be kept in the rear!! More in the next post.

A slight change to my strategy from my first try of the scenario.

First steps will be into Formosa (Operation Auburn)& then the islands around Okinawa (Op Blackubrn)before landing on Kyushu (Op Collingwood) (somewhere other than Kanoya) I will also take Chichi Jima to cover the supply lines and be a bit closer for the SE fighters.

Second invasion will be up towards Ominato (Op Zeehan), not sure which base yet.

First week of the battle has passed, the obligatory japanese air offensive impales themselves on a pre-warned defence, losses have been about 450 Allied to 1000 japanese (EDITED). The Allied 2E bombing offensive has hit the bases on Formosa heavily. B29 have hit the ports at Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka & Hiroshima, they will take a breather and hit airfields for a few days next.

My CV force (20+ CV!!) are organising themselves, fitting out to my satisfaction and enlarging a few sqns that are still at the 27 TOE. They will move from Guam to Manila/Subic Bay and support the landings. Lots of ships are leaving PH, some to the other HI but many back to SF and support shipping to Guam & Manila Bay.

If I get it right, I'll post a strat map of the plan, before I change it all.

RE: Downfall II - tweaked a bit!

Being smarter than the average lump of wood, I saved my Scen 1 campaign over my Downfall campaign. Same time of year, just 4 years earlier.

So I replayed the first week again, interesting to see small differences in the japanese reactions.

My strategy for Sept 46 is to do a lot of tidying up and prep my invasion forces.

The British Pacific Fleet is at Peleliu, a zero port (I'll change that for the next try) so I have built some TF and will relocate them to Manila as well as put a few more FAA Sqns on board.

The USN CV fleet is mostly at Guam, again they need reorganising and I'll send 2 TF comprising 6CV, 2 CVL etc to Manila. They plus the BPF and the 39 CVE already at Manila (you can walk to Corregidor if you are careful) will support the invasion of Formosa. The invasion will be 2 strikes, 6 Divs from Manila plus will land at Kaki on the west coast and 3 Divs from Naga will wait for them to land then land at Taihoku on the N-E coast.

A Marine Division at Pearl will prep for Chichi Jima to land late Oct and the rest of the PH Army and West Coast units will prep for a landing on Nth Honshu nr Ominato.

September started off with the Allies in the Phillipines area preparing for the air onslaught which they were expecting, the raids which arrived were lighter than expected, and Allied strikes on Formosan bases started to wear down the defenders for an Invasion which will leave Manila Bay about October 1.

Action through to 12 September has been similar, both Allied and japanese air attacks hitting at various bases, some successful, others expensive failures.

Things may hot up soon, I have the BPF plus a USN CV TF about to round Batan Is, each has their CAP up and can be assured of a strong japanese attack.

(Failed in trying to use GIMP to make maps, back to the drawing board!)

My Allied CV TFs managed to pass the top of Luzon without attack, a fortnight of airbase bashing might be responsible for keeping them grounded.

While Allied fighters rule, anytime you step from under their cover, or have any escorts grounded by weather, the still competent IJAAF manages to knock down my A26 or Beaufighter 21.

RE: Downfall II - tweaked a bit!

Post by JeffroK »

Given a late night and early morning watching Ghana beat someone I've got through to Oct 1. Things were a bit iffy over Okinawa, Naha base starts at 3 and I didnt notice, so its CAP never got enough into the air and my A26 were suffering heavily. So I sent them back to I&I at Subic and brought up some NZ & Oz P51D's.
I brought forward my Formosa attack, lift started 26/9 and on 30/9 V Amphib & XI Corps hit the Kaki beaches with heavy Air and Sea Bombardment support.

In addition, after a short break the B29's started daylight attacks on IJAAF airfields causing heavy loss at originally cheap cost.

A bit of a spoiler, some of my Convoys about 400 miles due East of Legaspi come under air attack, yep, Emily & Nell make great kamikaze, 2 x APA & 1 x AKA lost.

Now I know to add some CVE to my convoys, even that far south.

Hi Jeff,
Is there a reason you did not go into Takao first?

Thx.

Not really, recce showed Kaki had fewer troops (Found 2 Bdes +) against Takao (1 Div ++). Trying to be realistic in not butting up against the heaviest defenders if possible.  Took Takao on D+7 or 8.
