BOB 1.02 1 month campaign 1940...Interesting observations

Eagle Day to Bombing of the Reich is a improved and enhanced edition of Talonsoft's older Battle of Britain and Bombing the Reich. This updated version represents the best simulation of the air war over Britain and the strategic bombing campaign over Europe that has ever been made.

BOB 1.02 1 month campaign 1940...Interesting observations

Post by Rusty1961 »

1. Me-109/E-1s can fly all the way north to Wittering? I damaged a lot of them, yet none appear to have to ditch or crash-land. I would think a E-1 would easily be a bingo kill on the flight out due to damage. I damage these planes at Wittering and they still egress with no problem. Yes, I even ambush them just NE of England with Spits and they still outfight my spits. I get damages, but almost no kills.

2. Does the AI cheat? The AI hadn't been bothering my coastal airfields until the very day I moved 18 Hurricanes onto a coastal base. Makes me wonder.

3. The gruppe leaders of the German bombing formations usually do more damage than the follow on bombers!

I'm really curious about #1 and if that is historical. My information says no, but I'm open to other sources/opinions.
God made man, but Sam Colt made them equal.

2. Absolutely not. This was one of our major hangups with the old BTR/BOB. The AI uses a priority system to pick a field for a sweep based on multiple factors including AC, location/zone, AA, etc. It used to use the current AC on the field - so it had god knowledge. I changed it to use the reconned plane levels, and most recent recon date. So in theory if it recons on day 0, you move on night 0 and load up with flak, it could then sweep an empty airfield flak trap.

I'm not sure about #1 - I don't pretend to know the history, I just code. I'm confident my fuel model is OK, but different things affect fuel use, so we never implemented a crash on 0 fuel...

#3 isn't unusual. The leader gets the best position and no smoke. The followers have to deal with smoke, creepback, and diminishing returns...

Played some 50 turns of the BoB40 campaign, only, against the AI, best the 109s seem to be able to do is some 1,2:1 air to air. In Bob41 they do considerably better, especially Bf 109 F-4 and of course the Focke-Wulf. [:'(]
