Close Combat - Last Stand at Arnhem
RE: Close Combat - Last Stand at Arnhem
right now Flames of War(Tabletop 15mm Wargaming) released the Op.Market Garden campaign and now Italy w/the HG Division, so between those and this for PC I am sitting in clover for the moment.

RE: Close Combat - Last Stand at Arnhem
just started reading Dying for St.Lo..which would make a good Matrix rehash of CC5, would could be done just as WAR and TLD. Good selection of units with the US and Germans.

RE: Close Combat - Last Stand at Arnhem
Just watched the teaser, glad to see you can still blow bridges.
Like said the battles leading on the road to Arnhem are just as important, The Operations like Hell's Highway are key to the game IMO.
Although I guess adding air-strikes, since the Luftwaffe and USAAF/RAF were both active in the sky will be a bit of gamey fun over the Original..I'll enjoy calling in 109G-6/R-1s, 109G-6/R-6 and 190F-8s on some hapless Tommies shacked up in a Dutch townhouse.

Purchase pionts are back and integreated into the new Battle Group system. I'm a happy camper.

I simply could never get into this game. It always looked to me like some RTS click-fest.

Def is looking better and better for this reboot of Close Combat.

RE: Close Combat - Last Stand at Arnhem
It has never, ever been a click fest...It's the only RTS game I've ever enjoyed...infact it was one of the first and has never been done better...it's at a great pace and infantry actually are worth a damn...
I'd defend the CC series to the hilt when it comes to this aspect. I hate and despise pretty much all RTS games as NONE have lived upto the CC series. Infact I cant believe after all those years since it's first release there hasn't been another RTS game that plays aswell. Every RTS game since has been a click fest ...fast paced...unrealistic headache...
So, NO, CC is in no way a click fest...if it was then I'd never have played it for me than 10 mins...when Ive spent hours playing the game in it's various incantations...it's probably the game series I've played the most since my computer game career started in '83.

Just watching some old CC2 footage...I forgot how good it looked...the tanks seemed so much more perspective than in the later games where they seemed way to small compared to the infantry...I also remember there being more issues the pixeltruppen went through like gun jams (I think)....the more I think about it the more that game had over the later releases...I may reinstall it and see if it works with Win7 32bit.

I have it installed in my Vista 32 and it works just fine.

Two questions after watching the video-
Part of what made the AI better in CC2 was the small map size. Have these been made larger in the remake?
The orders menu looked like the CC2 one. Will the extended orders menu from CC4/5(defend facing, etc) be in this remake?

Good to see Bridge Too Far resurrected
I love Close Combat 1 the best from all the series (Atomic and Matrix game versions)...fine call me crazy. The AI was great, to me CC1 played more like a simulation than a wargame. Still have it on my hard drive and plays just fine in Win 7.

IMO> CC2 armour was the best, esp when zoomed in(a lost feature in later CCs) The Tanks were more to scale to the infantry vs CC4/5 for sure. Art was a 100 times better than CC4/5. Just look at the CC2 Pz IV or StuG. Only the CC2 Pz IV's Drivers and Bow MG are reversed from real life.

RE: Close Combat - Last Stand at Arnhem
I just remember sneaking around in buildings near Arnhem Bridge with my piat teams as a tank rolled down the streets in search of my boys...can't remember whether the tank was a Panther or a Stug...but it did scare me as all I had was piat temas to hit it with, so had to sneak and get behind it...great tension.
Can't wait.
Just a quick word to Matrix....please, for the love of God, if you're going to price this out of all but the most dedicated wargamers pockets, please give us a heads up. That way the "sticker price shock effect" you spoke of with BftB won't happen and if people do still want to buy it, they can gather some cash prior to release so they can buy it when it's released. If you had done that for Battles for the Bulge, you may well have had more purchases! That was simply a release disaster

What's been learned during these updates, is that the number, and placement of VLs has more to do with AI than map size, something that just gets magnified on the smaller maps...plus, if you talk to people who have insight into the original CC2 code from back in the day, it wasn't exactly a fair fight. Apparently, the original code sort of allowed the AI to 'cheat'.
If it does not have a gun, it cannot be fun.

The price on this will be the same as Close Combat: The Longest Day, no price increase.
