Corps Units

Post by JeffroK »

One of the great features of AE is the ability to have a Division start in a "broken down" state and if required gather all of the component units together to rebuild the complete Division.

Can this feature also be used to portray a Corps sized unit?

One gripe, and it needs a lot of management, is to organize the units which move at different speeds, how many have had an armour or arty unit arrive a day before the infantry?

If we create a Corps "Mother" unit (example XXX Indian Corps) can we assign "children units (exammple, 7th, 19, 23rd Indian Division, 255 Armd Bde, Gardners Horse, 5 Med Rgt an 8 HAA Rgt) so that if required they can all come together and move and fight as 1 unit. When playing at a time where large forces are fighting in the 1 hex (as in Downfall) the micromanagement to move from hex to hex becomes a real pain. I had 21 Divs plus 40+ support units moving as 1 Army in my game.

Is there a device limit per unit??

Late thought, once rebuilt, you cant split them back to their components[&:]

Maybe scenarios like this need to be at a higher level than for the rest of the campaign??

One thing I find lacking with the new OOB splits, is the ability to actual split a full unit back into its 'editor' components rather than the /A,/B,/C units after recombining the unit at some stage.

I'd be happy if I knew what the ABC unit designation is, so that I could assign them the Divisional insignia.[:D]

I like the Corps idea, BTW.
I brought up a similar idea a year ago.[;)]

I originally was toying with the idea of using the parent unit's insignia for the /A/B/C units as their slot numbers move around.
But I must have got sidetracked by other things.

[edit]
Just checked code and it looks like I had added that. Must be getting forgetful, or it doesn't work.[&:]

Now that would be very cool![&o]

Wouldn't have to copy thousands of bitmaps.[:D]

Would this work for dividing airgroups?[X(]

Probably way too late to suggest this, but how about divisional HQ's similar to those for air groups?  The HQ units could have a little support and maybe a bonus for training.  This would encourage keeping parts and pieces of the division somewhere in the same neighborhood.  Just a thought.

Why make it so complicated??

How about a "Follow Unit" command like Task forces. That way you only need to set the destination of the Corps HQ and all the other units follow along behind...... (or 'slightly in front of' in the case of faster units).

Reg,

It's the fiddling around with the faster units, playing Andy's DOWNFALL scenario you end up with Army Group sized stacks, 50+ units to work through and its a pain to lose a Tank Bn or Art Bn because you missed it!

I have never tried the "Follow" command for LCU, does this see the lead unit arrive first and the others "X" days behind?

I would really like a TF type unit for LCU, in AE you can even give it a name, to grab all allocated units and move it as one, at the slowest speed if necessary.

Jeff,

It's not that hard. Just select the HQ unit, set the destination and then click on the "Set All to Follow" button.

The mouse over message is "Order all other marching units in the unit's hex to stay in hex with this unit". Sounds pretty much like what you want.

I can't comment of its effectiveness so you might need to do a quick test run and see if works as you want....

I'm also in favor of unit consolidation later in the war. Usually my divisions are combined by mid-1943. I haven't tried Downfall yet, but can imagine how it would help to have integrated corps (that can be divided into A, B and C, of course).

"Follow" of course would work, but it's a matter of reducing clicks and keeping carpal tunnel at bay. [;)]

The japs invaded NZ in my game and activated the 3rd NZ division. The 3rd NZ is an HQ unit w/ support only. As the game has progressed I have started to assign all the "lose" battalions and brigades to the 3rd NZ Div. Seems the 3rd NZ is the only allied div HQ in the game.
