One very shallow poster has made some unjustified and shallow comments about the UK - lets not sling the mud back. There are plenty of US members on here who deserve better.
Beer.
Lets keep this about the beautiful game and not let it get hijacked by some 12 year old fail troll [;)]

Because people don't think like you, you're shocked. Brit intelligence I guess. I have read as many if not more books than you I bet to venture.ORIGINAL: JudgeDredd
Cheap shot - in before the lock.
More detailed - nothing to add...except, shocked. And possibly more shocked that the many, many other US folks on these boards have let such ridiculous comments go unchallenged. [X(]

One great thing about life here in Britain, we enjoy swimming, fishing and yachting in the sea.

I love the competition and the nationalism for every country. Soccer is getting bigger and bigger everyday in America. 30 years ago very few people in the USA played soccer. Now in my generation almost every child plays soccer and many more continue to play throughout high school and college. I expect the US to get stronger and stronger each year as soccer gets more popular here.

America never got going in WW1 to say you won it for us...yes the mere fact you where on the way made Germany go on the offensive and eventually you would have had enough troops to make a difference on the field...but I have never read that America won WW1...sorry...
Also Pershing wasted 100,000's of doughboys lives using tactics that had gone out of daet years previously...
Russia won WW2 simple as that...the Americans stopped them taking over Europe most likely.

France, Italy and England.... Other younger footballing countries seem to approach the game with a freshness and the older European teams seem to be lacking. I think we must learn to adapt or it will soon be the norm that the European teams will fail to get out of the goup stages.
Money is the root of all evil as they say and here in England it is crushing the English game. Foreign players are imported at all levels making our home grown players inexperienced and the pool of international standard players too small. In the richest league in the world my club Liverpool has benn bought on credit saddled with £350 m debt by Foreign owners who know nothing about football but know everything about making money for themselves......grrr

Gotta disagree with you there. The US was advised by the UK and France to ship troops not equipment and to not waste effort by changing over production to provide for the AEF's hardware needs. The allies would supply what they could. The US acquiesced.
In the AEF's early fighting around Cantigny, Belleau Wood and 2nd Marne it had to make do with less artillery (especially heavy artillery), machine guns, aircraft and tank support than other allied nations on the western front. Some of these deficiencies had been made up for by the start of the St. Mihiel/Meuse-Argonne in 9/18 by French artillery support and a lot of French and British air support. AEF's tactics by this time weren't so much outmoded (their formations were less dense than before) as hindered by a lack of familiarity with moving large formations and using large amounts of artillery and air support. AFAIR the AEF's casualties weren't significantly greater than the French during the offensive. Imo the lack of equipment and Pershing's choice for the place of the offensive caused more casualties than the AEF's tactic issues. The area had been held by the Germans since 1914 and was the site of the previously failed Nivelle offensive.
Fyi, the AEF suffered about 50-60k battle deaths. About 1/2 occurred during the Meuse-Argonne, a 10 week offensive.
Looking forward to Germany v. Argentina although it may be one step closer to a naked Maradonna. Nothing good can come from that.
RE: "The Perfect Game"
US didn't win WWI for the Entente, her unworn millions only ensured that Germany, now alone with AH finished and her last grand offensive against the French and British stalled, couldn't win as even the most innovative tactics and/or new toys still came with a bloody pricetag after each battle....and America had so many men.....with the naive, enthusiastic attitude of 1914 in 1918.
oops.. This thread is about Sock- er.

I'm supposed to hate Soccer/Football/footeball, but i'm biased.....because i sucked at it as a lad/tyke/little leager/hellspawn.
Amazingly.....i discovered the secret to why it's so popular. You just have to add a British style pub to the equation (an Irish style one will do too) I find myself staring at it hypnotically while sipping at a pint at my favorite after-work place. Back and forth go the ball. (sip pint) back and forth go the ball. (sip pint)..... When i snap out of my trance, i reflect on how devious those Brits are. Soon i'll be drinking TEA. blech.

Argentina vs Germany...... now that's going to be a tasty game. Who to support this time. Argentina? Maradona's Hand of God still grates so I think I may have to support the Germans.... first time for everything.
Holland vs Brazil..... another potentially great game. Usually support Holland but then again have to love Brazil....
The World Cup always gets better when England are out... I can relax and watch the football.

I enjoyed playing soccer much more than watching it until I discovered the same pub/alcohol connection that you did. Yup, those Brits are crafty, first sinking the Lusitania and attacking Pearl Harbor to get us into WW1 and WW2, now pubs. Sadly, I like tea.

The possibility of Maradonna getting naked keeps me from rooting for Argentina.
Dennis Bergkamp was my favorite player, have to root for Holland.

heh...i needed a good chuckle this morning. thx! [:D]. My condolences on being hooked on Tea. Does Chai Latte count? if so i'm slipping off the precipise.
RE: "The Perfect Game"
another advantage of soccer. You don't get into potentially embarrasing pub situations. One of my pubs serves a delicous meatball apetizer using Kobe beef. They are called "Kobe Bleu Balls" on the menu (as the meat is mixed with Bleu Cheese) but regulars usually just call them "Kobe balls" when ordering.
Like i said....normally not a problem ordering em out loud to the busy bartender.....until the Lakers/Celtics championship started getting aired on the Tellie.........

Pershing wanted the Americans to be independent from British and French command and he fought hard to command his own troops. Many people thought Pershing was a cold and distant commander for this reason.ORIGINAL: wodin
