just to add another wrinkle that i'm not so sure about...will a single plane fly more than a 10 degree sector in a phase if the RANGE is reduced significantly? for example, if the Catalina search range is set to 5 hexes instead of 20 hexes, would that allow a single plane to search more than one 10 degree sector?

A plane can only search 10 degrees in a phase, regardless of search range. However, a smaller range means a more thorough search, increasing the chances of detecting the enemy.

Hope this helps.

Yes, shortening the range increases the odds of detecting something within the sector searched.

It may be my imagination (and I'll have to go back to check) but I swear that the beginning and the end of the Search Arc's go back and forth from clockwise to counter clockwise when setting the Arcs.

I still like the feature and I will go back an re-read the manual for a possible explanation.

Fine as it is !!!

How on Earth should 5 planes cover zillions of square miles ??? come on boys, this is utterly unrealistic...

How does one get the search arcs to display on the map?
This is one Czech that doesn't bounce.

My father qualified as a pilot with the PBY although he flew other aircraft in squadron service during WWII. He told me, only partly in jest, that PBY's did everything at 90 kts, even crash. Using that 90 kt speed as the search speed you will find that to fly away from base for 14 hexes, fly two hexes to the right, and return to base takes 14 hours. Thus, it is actually impossible for a single aircraft to fly one of those wedges in both the AM and PM phases.

But in so far as the game goes, one can look at the wedge shape as the path, out to the right 10 degrees and back to base, that a single search plane flies for its search in any given phase. Want more wedges, use more airplanes.

Search arcs - I get it, I love it. Please don't change a thing!

well, in fact, no, it is NOT fine as it is. 2 months ago or so I started a thread in which I said the arcs search thing is NOT working. The planes find things OUTSIDE the assigned arcs [:)]

I like it, but it MUST work, it MUST be fixed [:)] On the next patch, I hope.

I'm neutral on the issue as I don't use the feature.

I think I read somewhere that Groups on Naval Search have to pass 2 morale checks to get all the assigned planes to search, otherwise the number of searchers is reduced.

Is this correct?

If so, it means that the search arcs shown on the map are only valid if the group passes both morale checks so the actual area searched is less.

There is a check to see if each plane is fit to fly and I believe there is something in there about a check to see if a plane aborts due to mechanical problem after launch. There are probably some other checks too. I haven't looked at the code recently.

It is true that the search arcs drawn on the screen are what you will get if the number of planes available doesn't change. It's the only way to do it. There is no way to predict exactly how many planes will be available the next day for a mission.

That seems way too complicated. All I ever wanted was to have my search planes, no matter how few, search in the area that I wanted instead of a 360 degree circle. So if I have two search planes and I want them to search 180 degrees of coastline, that's what I want them to search, not a couple of 10 degree sections.

This bit about 10 degree increments is waaaaaaaaaaay too much busy work.

Sorry guys, as far as I am concerned, this is way too over-engineered.

So you want unrealistic abilities for your search planes. I'm afraid you've got the wrong game if that's what you wanted. What's so hard about figuring out you need more planes to conduct the search you want? Increase the searching % for the squadron, or use more than one squadron to perform search missions. Why you'd want your patrol planes to fly up New Guinea is kind of puzzling to me anyway.

Agreed, Search Arc is NOT complicated at all also its not over engineered. I think the search arc is perfect for the game, to allow you to maximize your search over a small area or large. The game is trying to give you options when it comes to Naval Search, Naval Attack or ASW. If AE is to complex to take an hour to learn something, then perhaps WITP would be an easier choice where they have no Search Arc.

Honestly the Search Arc is the least of your learning curve.
