What this game needs

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

What this game needs

Post by decaro »

After playing most of the scenarios from the Allied side, I find it difficult to see the overall picture of this battle.

Unlike HttR, BftB doesn't have the comprehensive scenarios needed to see this "big picture"; HttR has 3 such scenarios, i.e., Arnhem, which shows the story of market Garden in detail. In fact, MG and the Bulge have some things in common: an Allied force must relieve advanced units that have been cut-off and surrounded by (mostly) superior German armor and mech infantry.

However, there was a Bulge scenario created for HttR called "Seven Roads to Hell v. 1.11," which should have been adapted to BftB; in fact, I'm surprised it wasn't included in its original release.

"Seven Roads" allows the Allied player to set-up his own defenses around Bastonge in prep for the inevitable German attack, or control the Axis forces as they appear at various times and in various places all along the outskirts of the map.

With the enhanced AI and new supply system, IMO, this would have worked well for BftB.

So why wasn't it done?

I played "seven roads to hell" and although the map was seriously flawed, it was pretty fun to play.

Race for Bastogne covers the same period as that scenario only on a larger scale, does it not?

Thanks for pointing that out. Perhaps the "Seven Roads" map was so different that I didn't see the similarities?

In "Race," some Allied units are already pre-positioned, and as I haven't yet played it from the German side, I don't know if Axis reinforcements attack Bastogne from different directions.

I don't recall finishing "Race" as the Allies as I've had several games crash before achieving Victory Conditions, so I will wait for the patch and run it again after the fix.
