RE: BACK IN BUSINESS - PzB goes East again(st) Andy Mac
Yeah, that was a good follow up! [:)]
Posted a comment about that in my last post witpqs:
"After the KB's strike against PH in 12/41 and the cruises and operations against Northern Oz and Ceylon the carriers lacked replacements
and therefore fought at Midway with only 3/4 of their full ac capacity. I don't see any problems replacing the Yamato series with 4 Shokaku and or Hiryu type carriers.
- This would have required an increase in pilot training but of course it could have been achieved but it would have been difficult to get high command backing for this"

that´s just not true, the Japanese CVs went into action more than once without having their full complement of aircraft, let alone pilots.
Not in 41-42 unless they took losses and were unable to come back for replacements just like the allies . In 44 it was more common but we are talking about the start of the war..
I´m not talking about 41 and I can´t figure out why you are, because how should they have built four more fleet carriers until 41?
Pls read the whole thread ( which you have cut) .. ie instead of the Yamatos which started in 37...focus on CVs .. So increasing the fleet air arm in this relation is before and durring the early war.

At Midway KB carriers did not have 100% of their aircraft.
The CVL ? Compared to 41 Hiryu caried 9 more operational planes , Kaga 2 more , Soryu 9 more , Akagi 3 less. Hiryu and Soryu caried 12 strike planes more , the larger cariers less ( which makes sense as they can control CAP better and this isnt a surprise strike) . So not a great difference and that is after Coral Sea attrition.
[Edit] Thouh the larger cariers were missing a lot of their replacements - this is not a big issue as the replacements served their purpose after attrition in the first 7 months.
I do note both the allies and Japanese expected short sharp engadgements not high aircraft attrition over multiple engagements. And we all know the issues with the Kate factory being shut down ..since the Jill was comming soon...

Looks like an army is moving on Rockhampton!
- Andy probably wants his payback on land, wasn't to happy about his first new CVE and the 60 ac and pilot that
went down the drain. Also said that the tanker had 4 destroyer escorts...and we newer even saw them [:)]

RE: BACK IN BUSINESS - PzB goes East again(st) Andy Mac
Now it is going to get exciting. PzB, how are your recon capabilities in Sector 3? Can you spot any movement or preparations at Charleville? Anything further out in the plains? What is left in Bundaberg or Maryborogh?
I think you can really do a lot of damage to his armor and infantry when advancing in the open, and that not only because the AE engine seems to (massively?) overestimate the damage done by 2E and 4E (think of Rommels losses from British bombardment in Afrika -- especially in the open they were comparably low because formations were wide and open as well).
What are your plans for KB? Where are the US CV, in CentPac, or on the AUS east coast waiting for KB? I must admit the idea of sending surface raiders or even CVBGs into CentPac to raid his convoy routes sounds tempting, but that would require to know the location of the US CVs. If he concentrated his operations and strength now in AUS Sector 3 and appears to be advancing also from India, he must have a weakness of LBA and ground units in CentPac. Probably he will try to cover that will the naval assets, so using CV raids there might be risky (aside from distracting from possible needs in the Indian ocean or on the AUS east coast soon). But nonetheless I would send some surface raiders (single BBs or CAs?) to bring depth to the CentPac AO, and force him to spread naval and LBA covering forces over the whole AO. The more Andy got to spread his forces out hunting a single raider, the thinner his lines. Might be worse a risk, or two?

RE: BACK IN BUSINESS - PzB goes East again(st) Andy Mac
We have lots of recon, but they mostly focus on the enemy bases so enemy troop concentrations easily "get lost".
That's why I moved the recon unit towards the troop advancing from Charleville and quickly made contact.
Yes, Andy is exposed but the range from our main bases is still considerable.
The KB is just getting back into service after their refit. 3 CV, 2 CVL and 2 CS are merging at Rabaul with the last 3 fleet carriers will be ready
in the HI's in 2-3 days. The Junyo (which I don't consider a fleet carrier) still need 19 days to complete repairs.
Have no idea were Andy's carrier's are. Most likely in PH or West Coast; there are not too many of them and he don't want to meet the KB.
I did send the heavy cruiser Chikuma to raid the Central Pacific; it made contact and sunk some ships and were then sunk by enemy carriers.
- For now we need to follow the situation in Zone 3.

Here's some important info for you:
Before doing this turn I spoke with Andy on Skype and told him I was leaving Rockhampton.
- Then his army was in the hex next to the town and all Jap units had already changed to strat mode and given orders to move to Bowen.
Loading up the turn I notice that the Allied army had already moved into Rockhampton at the end of the turn.
"Good timing" was my first thought, but then I noticed that all Jap units had cancelled the order to rail to Bowen [X(]
Talking to Andy he tells me that strat move mode is extremely hairy and his units moving into Rockhampton would be enough to
cancel all movement preparations. He also says that this routine is none of his work.
I was allowed to start marching out of town while switching to move mode... Appreciate this [&o]
So for all the rest of you, strat movement must be completed 1 turn before an enemy unit enters a base!!!
------------------------
My view on this newly and expensively bought piece of information:
In real life the Germans unloaded and embarked from railheads in the frontline.
The units were more vulnerable, fair enough. But imagine this scenario: You've ordered your Army of 50k troops to move out of town,
they're all set and the order is given. During the night a single enemy recon unit of 150 men enters the town and your 50k troops
are forced to unload and stay in town.
In WitP even a single para dropped squad could be enough to cancel the strat move order, so it's essential that we are aware of this
to avoid serious FUBAR.
My point of view is that this routine should be changed; strat moded troops should be very vulnerable to enemy air and ground attacks.
Ideally they should not be involved in ground fighting at all, the other troops in the hex should fight it out and if forced to retreat
even the strat moded troops should suffer this fate and losses.

RE: BACK IN BUSINESS - PzB goes East again(st) Andy Mac
A bit uncertain what to do this turn; was under the impression that the troops in Rockhampton were allowed to march towards Bowen.
- They were not attacked by the ground troops but 190 Allied bombers attacked them in Rockhampton this turn and movement was restricted to 15 miles...
I'd rather stand and fight in fortified Rockhampton than being "allowed" to march onto the open road north of the town while
being constantly bombed. If attacked on the unfortified plain the rout would be much worse than if they stay in town.
I truly dislike to learn all the things that's not specified in the manual the hard way [:@]
- If railroad movement is only to be used for far behind the line movements with severe restrictions whenever enemy troops are around there should be a
section in the manual stating intention and purpose as well as potential penalties.
Better bring the entire KB and fleet to ensure that we can clear up in this mess; one way or the other.

I had the same experience with a bde on Java. It was in strat mode with orders to move along an open rail line. A Jap unit moved into the adjacent hex. It never moved no matter what I did. Very ugly. By the time I realized it really wasn't going to be able to move, it was too late to get unpacked to fight. Very ugly.

One thing I've run across numerous times is the loss of all movement from stacks set to follow another unit. I keep meaning to post on the tech forum when this happens during the game. I often have units in "move" mode following another unit. Sometimes, for whatever reason, the stack periodically losses all movement gained to date and reverts back to "0". Sometimes the stack may be bombed, and you'll see that a following unit is now set at "combat" move and all other units again have lost their previous movement. Sometimes the lead units movement orders become grayed out and are blank despite the previous turn showing 34 miles completed towards it's objective, then a quick check of all the following units shows they are still set to follow the lead unit, but their orders are grayed out as well and the movement completed is blank. I hope this makes sense, essentially units "lose" movement for some reason and you are forced to start all over again. I've had enemy units escape an encirclement because of this on more than one occasion so it can become quite frustrating. I'm sure it has to be a bug, and if not some explanation as to what is actually happening would be nice to avoid it happening in the future.

I learned this also just 3 days ago as I was attempting to move units ... as you say, big burn.ORIGINAL: PzB

I was allowed to start marching out of town while switching to move mode... Appreciate this [&o]
So for all the rest of you, strat movement must be completed 1 turn before an enemy unit enters a base!!!
BTW: the orders cancellation I think applies to "move" as well, but you do not lose the distance already moved. However you swtich to combat mode. Can anyone confirm?

I haven't seen this in a while. I did see this back about release 2 or so, but not since. I had thought it fixed. [:(]

Good of Andy to help you out, sort of.
Question: Would this routine apply if one or more units were left in combat mode as a rear guard? I assume the rear guard won't help, but it would be cool if it did.

got the same happening all the time, most often the lead unit moves out, the rest reverts to defend 0 hexes. My PBEM partner told me to set them all to march first and then to follow. No idea if that helps, I´ve just recently been told and haven´t tested it yet. So far I would have called follow unit movement as buggy as in WITP.

I truly dislike to learn all the things that's not specified in the manual the hard way [:@]
I agree, this kind of thing really sucks, and can cost you dearly now. I'd vote to ask Andy to go back two turns, and start over there. Then I'd make a stand in Rockhampton. Or go back three turns, and move by rail. Andy will also have a benefit from that, of course, since he will know the occurring events. So in any case this issue will give him some sort of advantage. Sorry PzB.

Happens to me too. 4 times in China so far. Have started a topic in Tech forum if you want to chime in.

I've found if you click on the map unit icon bringing up the screen showing all the units in the stack and use the "set all" button to change the movement mode you will most definitely lose all your previous movement. However, I've found if you instead bring up each units info screen indivudually and change the movement mode there you will not lose the movement. I hope this helps. Sorry to hijack the thread PzB. I'll stick to Speedy's tech forum post on the issue from now on.
