Road to Minsk AAR

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

I got 3 of the 7 so far (of course the 3 that are close to the start line :)

and now to see how the Russian Reacts (really, not much they can do, but...)

got my pocket, and the Russian has backed off Minsk is open for the kill, but the last 3 may be a issue, if he has any troops left over for that line (odds are, most of those will be depleted from the first turn attacks, those are the left overs and got aways, but you never know until you hit them)

hassle now, is most of the important fighting is going to be left to the Armor, the Inf will never close the gap fast enough to help out (if I had enough AP, I could make a couple of my Inf into Motorized troops, to get them to move to the front (that can't fight or enter enemy ZOC though)

(normal tactics when you can, you use Inf to make a breakthough, you slip your Armor into the gap, make a pocket, then let the Inf mop up, your Armor then moves forward, and if they can't make another pocket, wait for the Inf to start getting close again, kind of HARD when your on a time limit though)

okay this is a closer view of what going on from the south

got some armor at the start of the Marsh, that may be a mistake

Nice Pocket, this is where you do your damage

didn't think you wanted a step by step account of each battle of the mop up

the Russian left a strong force in Minsk, but no flankers, Minsk falls, but had to use my Armor to take it

(kind of too important to leave alone, but may of been better, to bypass it, and let my Inf try for it on turn 3, but if they fail, that is a total lost battle, a toss up)

got some more pockets, got into position to have a chance for the last 3 VH's

looks good ?

I just wasn't able to make that last hex for the next pocket, that will come back to haunt me

(wasn't counting on that being a major river down there)

the VP end of turn 2 (but the Russian will get another 80 points from the cities it still has, so it is closer then it looks

OOB numbers at the end of turn 2, I know where 200-250 of those tanks are, they in my pockets, it is the others, but 300 tanks are not a issue (unless you are the one facing them !)

oh man, I lost my last turn snaps !!!

ah man

well, a Armor and Mot Div took Vitebsk

was able to do a rush and take Zhlobin

Mogilev held, 7 attacks by 7 Divs couldn't break it

(and yes, if I would of by passed Minsk and left it for the Inf, I would been in better shape for a stand up fight at Mogilev (to be honest, I was worried about Vitebsk, I thought I could take Mog)

clean out the pockets, formed another one (that one don't matter, but, habit is habit)

so, end the turn with 6 of 7 VH's

and now it is sit back and see what happens

well, it is all over but the shouting

still a major win, but could of been better !

two minor mistakes gave the Russian more points then they should of gotten !, but at the time, it looked like the right thing to do

(hassle with a small map, short time, in real game, I wouldn't of even bothered with Mog, I would of cut it off, and bypassed it, and left it for my Inf following up)

but, will say, it is a fun little battle, and as a trainer, it gets the idea across

hope it was helpful

Thanks for the AAR.

There are a number of errors in the Logistics Phase Event log screen:

"been" should be "has been/have been" or "was/were"

"Fuel refinaries" should be fuel refineries.

"Consumed by vehicles production" should be consumed by vehicle production.

Oil probably isn't consumed by oil production, but by fuel production.

"Aircraft factroties" should be aircraft factories.

"aircarft production" should be aircraft production.

"aicraft factory locations" should be aircraft factory locations.

Whatever "ground types" are, it would make more sense to make it singular instead of plural, so ground type instead of ground types.

"Ground types prodyction" should be ground type (or types) production.

"form *number* manpower centers" should be "from *number* manpower center.

I was under the impression that there was only a motor pool, not a motor pool and a logistics vehicle pool, if so it might make sense to change the "trucks were repaired and returned to the logistics pool" to trucks were repaired and returned to the motor pool.
