RE: RTS games
Gary,
If you like RTS, like LarryP said, don't miss the Warhammer series. Get the Platinum Edition, you should be able to get it from NWS at a very reasonable price.
Dawn of War 2 and Chaos Rising are both good, with a small number of units and some aspects of RPG thrown in for good measure. If you get the Dawn of War get DOW2 first. Chaos Rising is a stand alone game, but not as good as the first one. There are rumors of another coming out in the near future.

RE: RTS games
The first Dawn of War game and all of it's expansions are must plays. There is not many greater thrills in gaming than commanding an elite Space Marine force as it faces down heretics and aliens for the glory of the Emperor.
It perfectly captures the minatures which I spent way too much money and way too much time on in college.

I'd also add World in Conflict, Men of War, and AI War: Fleet Command w/ expansion.
All excellent choices; although WiC was a little fast for my aging reflexes.

RE: RTS games
I expect Starcraft 2 to be a bit of a revival for the PC games industry in terms of sales numbers. I think 9 millions units sold in 2010 is possible. If it beats COD Black Ops I expect it could also be the biggest selling game of the year which has not happened to a PC game in a very long time.

Distant Worlds. It's the most fun space 4x title I've played in a long time!

I noticed on eBay that one U.S. seller has:ORIGINAL: LarryP
You said you like RTS so you should really like the Warhammer series. My favorite is Dawn Of War Dark Crusade. Do you use Steam at all?
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade for $2.99
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Game of the Year Edition for $1.99
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault for $1.99
(Or you can buy all three for a dollar more.)

It's funny, I originally thought this post was a troll to snare Ravinhoo, err um Killroyishe.....uhhh MajFrankBurns into one of his bileous rants on all things RTS. But, oddly enough, he hasn't taken the bait.
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

One other thing on the Warhammer games...DoW1 is a true RTS...DoW2 and Chaos Rising are more like real time squad strategies up to the point of being RPG lite. There is no base building, your squads gain levels and you can equip them to your hearts content.
But they are both great games.
And if you wanna go real old school I still love Total Annihilation. The AI it quite aged and not great but it's a pretty good game that avoids the Rock / Paper / Scissor syndrome of most RTS...for example most land units can fire on air units but dedicated AA will be much more effective. Same with AA...some AA can attack land units but overall is not as effective.
Never understood in RTS's that if you have a gun why you can't take a shot at a plane regardless if you are a land only unit. I understand the chance of scoring a hit is minuscule but give the option.

RE: RTS games
I bought Warhammer Dawn Of War I Platinum for 14.00 on Amazon. Hopefully that should keep me busy for a while. I took a look at World in Conflict but wasn't sure I'd like it or not.
Another question. I like Codename Panzers a lot. It's sort of like Panzer General meets RTS. There's no resource gathering or base building or anything like that. You basically start out with a small group of units and then expand and upgrade your units through a long linear campaign. Are there any other RTS games like that out there? I really like the format. I don't know what World in Conflict is like but I'm wondering if it's similar.
