Can't access surface for lock error

Post by Wotanist »

I have had Cross of Iron for a few years now. It used to work fine, however, I recently upgraded to Windows 7. When I load it on Win7, it runs fine for a bit, but as soon as I get to the main screen and open the drop box to play the campaign, it says "Can't access surface for lock" then crashes. Any ideas where this problem comes from?

Sad that since this game didn't work for me anymore, I went and bought the newest Close Combat thinking it was a compatibility issue with Win7. Unfortunately, that one doesn't even allow me to load the game at all. Go figure, eh?

Mod, please move this to the Cross of Iron forum. I had both forums open in separate windows and I mistakenly posted it to the wrong one. Thanks

I recently installed Win7 on my laptop. I couldn't upgrade Vista, so Vista still exists on it in the Windows.old folder. I think the problem is, I have not installed (or even played) any games since upgrading to Windows 7. Thus I don't think I even have DirectX installed. I am going to try installing that and see what happens.

Mooxe also had trouble with Win 7 Virtual Store affecting games I believe.

I had initially installed Cross of Iron with the download version. I kept the file from my last computer and maybe that is the problem. I will try uninstalling it now and reinstalling with the boxed version I have of it.

I tried installing Directx and while it says it was successful, it doesn't appear to have worked properly for me. When I go to dxdiag, it still says all the DirectX functions are unavailable when you go to the "display" tab.

I started thinking about this and getting very frustrated. Then the idea occurred to me. I recently installed Windows 7. I couldn't upgrade Vista, so instead I had to do a clean install. Well, I never thought of the idea that my drivers probably were never updated, so I went and updated my drivers. Voila! This fixed all my problems with Cross of Iron and Last Stand.

Thanks for all your help. :)
