Blown bridges and a major defeat

Close Combat – Last Stand Arnhem is a highly enhanced new release of Close Combat, using the latest Close Combat engine with many additional improvements. Its design is based on the critically acclaimed Close Combat – A Bridge Too Far, originally developed by Atomic Games, as well as the more recent Close Combat: The Longest Day. This is the most ambitious and most improved of the new Close Combat releases, but along with all the enhancements it retains the same addicting tactical action found in the original titles! Close Combat – Last Stand Arnhem comes with expanded force pools, reserve & static battlegroups, a troop point buying system, ferry and assault crossings, destructible bridges, static forces and much more! Also included in this rebuild are 60+ battles, operations and campaigns including a new enhanced Grand Campaign!

Blown bridges and a major defeat

Post by Foolio »

Sorry if this doesn't make any sense...

But I've just lost my first attempt at the Grand Campaign in a Major defeat on day 2, yet I'm not sure why. I captured some bridges and some were blown, I forget which. So I was doing okay I thought, but not great.

On the last map I played I broke the German morale within about 2 mins, so I thought I was doing well, until I read that they had been "forced to blow the bridge". If I have a storming attack and force them off the map or to disband without capturing the bridge victory location and they still blow the bridge, how am I meant to win?

First, we go in there and get wrecked, then we eat a pork pie...

You havent lost anything but battles yet. Your campaign continues until Sept. 26 or one side wins a total victory by controlling all maps and VLs at the end of a turn. When the Germans blow a bridge they suffer a total defeat in that battle and the Allies win a total victory...BUT...the Debrief screen at the end of turns (not battles) always defaults to the Campaign tab which shows the current status of the campaign were the campaign to end at that moment. Click on the Battle tab of the Debrief screen to view the results of the preceding battle.

As it is only day 2, it is expected the Axis would be well ahead, were the campaign to end at that moment.

Major road bridges can be repaired in about 24 hours (about 6 turns) according to the manual. If you can get XXX Corps to Arnhem in a few days time then you still have enough time to repair the bridge. Assuming the rail bridge is blown then you can still reinforce by the ferry landing I think, but your 1st AB soldiers will have to hold out for several days.

I'm in a similar situation on day 2(18th). Arhnem road bridge is blown but I haven't attempted the rail bridge yet. Frost's battalion was merged with another unit to make it stronger yet they still are in dire straights at the road bridge. Glider troops have just landed and are trying to rescue the bridge defenders. I have Nijmegen bridge and a clear path to it once the St Odenrude bridge is repaired. There is still hope.
