the usual sweep stupidity... two squadrons, three sweeps... two main bodies flying alone, the stranglers joining together... yeah, that´s how it was in WWII... wonder what ego you must be to ignore it and to swallow it while still saying "it´s all fine"...

Training flight from 252 Ku S-1 has been caught up in attack

like I´ve mentioned earlier, since I´ve reset all search archs, it´s pretty hard for the enemy to move in range of my PBY without being spotted... same here, Biak is pretty far away from Merauke (14 hexes?) but the enemy convoy was spotted immediately, triggering another succesful attack of the USN Liberators... they again absolutely prove to be killers, both attacked ships were hit multiple times even after fighting through the enemy Cap... looks like Rainer forgot about his Zeroes, they were set to training but seemed to do quite "well" against the bombers even if only one shows up as damaged... guess you would need at least 150 fighters on Cap to have a fair chance to stop a well sized strike of PB4Y-1 which means that KB would be in high danger if moving into range of my heavy bombers... if we would launch the USN 4Es together with Army 4Es then say good bye to your carrier based Zero Cap, the bombers would slice through the fighters easily...

Naval Attack: 5 x 500 lb SAP Bomb
4 x B-17F Fortress bombing from 10000 feet
Naval Attack: 8 x 500 lb GP Bomb

yesterday our bombers attacked shipping at Biak, today we attack a (once again) screwed up fast transport TF at Hollandia (it´s obviously still buggy to do fast transport missions)... not sure why my PB4Y-1 attack with reduced load while the B-17F attack with full load, I´ve seen the USN Liberators attack with full load at low alt before and I can´t figure out what´s going on to be honest... doesn´t really matter, they´re killers even with "only" five bombs... 17 bombers achieve 8 hits which is an excellent result considering which agile targets they´ve attacked... two 500lb bombs into a DD should put the ship in serious trouble that far from Truk... also Kuma should be seriously damaged after four hits but these could be FOW as the ship isn´t showing up as heavily damaged... enemy flak fire was quite severe at 1000ft...

then halve a dozen (why on Earth is only 50% of the squadron attacking?) from Nadzab show up, performing excellently too, putting one bomb in a before undamaged destroyer and another three 500lb bombs into Kuma which I expect to be in sinking state now...

Group patrol altitude is 6000 , scrambling fighters to 6000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 2 minutes

we guessed right today and the enemy still had his fighters at Biak on Cap... I was shocked to see "Zeroes climbing to 36000ft" and our fighters NOT diving on the enemy fighters climbing from 6000ft. Now that was a new experience for me. On the first look this combat report looks good, what you don´t see here are twice the numbers of Zeroes shot down but also a hell a lot of Lightnings being damaged. Guess some 6 Zeroes were downed but we lose 5 Lightnings in this attack which is a weekly replacement and therefor a tragedy... not having the dive has immense influence as could be seen here once again...

can someone enlighten me which wonder weapon the Japanese got that they always have clear sky in Burma when they attack ground units? I really keep an eye on that because I find it kind of odd to see Burma being completely sucked in all the time but my ground units seem to always be in a hex with clear sky, no matter where they are... while we have been bombing in the Australian desert in thunderstorms all the time... odd...

two of the damaged DDs were still afloat and were disbanded in port... the port attack probably wasn´t worth it because I guess the DDs would have been sunk anyway... another bomb hit each puts them down...

Rainer has set up a LRCAP trap today... ordered a sweep into the hex with the enemy units North of Moulmein to draw leaking Cap from Moulmein´s airbase but we didn´t only encounter a couple of enemy fighters from leaking Cap, but 48 enemies were reported waiting for our sweep to come in... none of the enemy fighters is able to fly as high as the Lightnings so we start off with a long lasting dive on the enemy Cap... it was obvious though that the number of enemy fighters was too big to see the Lightnings getting the never ending dive and as soon as we ran out of the dive bonus our twin tailed devils started to act as targets, not really being a threat to the enemy anymore... what also was really surprising was the fact that the Lightnings attacked from behind really often during the dive but the Tojos mostly ended up only damaged, which is not the norm at all... I can´t blame my Lightning squadron, the guys did a very good job, in the end they take down more than a dozen enemies for only twoLightnings lost...

here comes the follow on sweep, still engaging a stiff resistance but we again had a long dive on the enemy, taking them down in droves... the attacking squadron suffers three Lightnings lost but that´s still a 5 or 6:1 kill rate for my fighters... though with the recent P-38G losses the pool is dry and we´re missing some halve a dozen aircraft to bring the four squadrons on the map back to full strength... have to keep them grounded for some time to build up a couple of ac for the pool in case I have to fight a high value target (like KB at Darwin? [;)])... the losses must look devastating for the enemy and 39 enemies downed for 5 Lightnings lost (if the enemy losses are near correct) sure is an excellent result, problem is that I just can´t afford 5 Lightnings lost at the moment... this is going to change in mid 43 when the P-47 arrives and with 30 Lightnings per month then...

it´s reall hard to keep enemy airfields suppressed if there are some engineers and if you´ve got really bad weather all the time... in fact, it´s near impossible to keep them suppressed, that´s true for both Rabaul and Darwin... only a matter of time until I´m going to run into massed fighters on Cap...

an enemy TF was spotted moving towards Amchitka and therfor we´ve moved some Bolos to Adak and ordered them on lownav... we launch a nicely sized raid with lots of escort, to my surprise the Zeroes had no chance, they were shot to pieces by 70skiled P-40E... not the enemy, but we had the dive, which was as surprising as the end result... the bombers got through untouched and obliberated the freighter convoy with 500lb bombs... the Bolos were usually used as training squadrons for lownav attacks but it seems they´re of good use for these attacks, at least when attacking freighters... skill was pretty high, have upgraded one of the squadrons to B-26 as there are a couple of dozen in the pool... but there shouldn´t be much shipping in this region, so the squadrons will keep acting as training squadrons most of the time...

Aircraft Attacking:
11 x B-17F Fortress laying Mk 13 Mine from 10000 feet [:D]

Shouldn't minelaying ac drop down to a few hundred feet before laying mines?
Dropping them from 10k feet would be the same as bombing the Pacific!-)

have seen that article before and as I´m skipping it through, I noticed this. Guess the parachute does the trick, it´s about the MK25 but fits into the discussion:

edit: further down in the article it states that the mine laying missions usually were flown between 5000 and 8000ft.

Post by PzB74 »

That's the MK 25 mine, the ones dropped is the MK 13:
Air-dropped mine with magnetic pistol. Did not use a parachute and could be used as a bomb. 1,048 lbs.
(475 kg) total with a charge of 640 lbs. (290 kg) TNT or 1,118 lbs. (507 kg) total with a charge of 710 lbs. (322 kg) Torpex.

http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WAMUS_Mines.htm

So any ac dropping the MK13 would have to drop to a few hundred feet.

- From the articles I've read most mines were dropped from a low altitude, maybe it would be possible to drop them at higher speeds and altitudes but hit accuracy would suffer and the mines could explode at impact. Imagine mining a port or estuary, you would have to navigate accurately to insert the mines.

The first German magnetic mine captured by the British in 1940 was recovered from the mud in the Thames after the pilot didn't drop it accurately.
For simplicity it would be easiest to drop them with the main bomber stream while e.g. bombing Darwin, guess that's the approach AE has adopted.

Just imagined how it would look when a 1 ton mine came crashing down from the sky, would have been quite a splash even though it didn't explode! [:)]

wouldn´t make any difference I guess, none of the B-17 was yet hit by any defensive fire so I guess they´re not targeted by flak. (?) IIRC mine laying ac can now be at least intercepted by fighters on Cap. It would probably take too much recoding to have the bombers at the right alt for the different weapons I guess.

tried a surprise attack on Takao, bombers were coming from Changsha... you can´t hit anything without recon before and with that kind of weather during the attack... and we lose two bombers in this attack which can be clearly seen as a failure... perhaps we can at least force the enemy to place some more fighters on rearguard...

Contact with submarine is lost

a single subchaser was enough to cause major trouble here... Tambor takes three direct hits and five near misses and is forced to surface... the subchaser opened fire with a couple of pop guns but couldn´t score any hits... with the message "contact with submarine is lost" I expected the sub to be sunk, just to find out during the turn that Tambor is still afloat and tries to retire with 84 flt (61 mjr)... if the crew can reduce some of the minor flt damage then the sub has a fair chance to make it, I had subs with major flt around 80!! succesfully returning to port...

Rainer must have been unhappy with his sub attacks (of which he nearly had none, other than near Australia) and has sent his subs further out... my convoys usuall use shipping lanes some 40 hexes off the usual convoy routes...

with a 50% dud rate I wonder why we see 80% duds when we hit these vessels... I´ve got the feeling that this is not the correct message and the torps miss most of the times and aren´t duds, but misses... this could also explain why we had a 94% hit rate in 42 with Mk-14 torps, but still the 80% dud rate... we more or less always got "torps failed to detonate"... I don´t have another explanation... [8|]

interesting intel... I´ve asked Rainer if BBs are on their way to Darwin and pointed out that the mines there and my torpedo bombers are already waiting for them... [:D] while there are mines, the torp bombers are a bluff, as I´ve got no torp bombers with the appropriate range to reach Darwin with torps... the only "long range" torp bombers available are the Aussie Beauforts but those got a torp range of 8 hexes and Groote Eylandt is 9 hexes from Darwin and we´ve just begun to build up Gove... Gove´s airfield can house Corsairs and torpedo armed Bauforts being able to reach Darwin...

we benefit from the fact that the enemy sweep was divided into a main part and a piece meal strike as follow on strike as it happens in 95% of the times... the same is true for leaking Cap against the first strike and leaking Cap against the second strike... it´s just more or less always the same, there´s no dynamic at all... we had three fighters being damaged during the enemy´s dive, but were then able to take out an Oscar...

Zeroes on Cap? Not coming from Darwin´s airfield so it must be LRCAP... closest base would be Wyndham but that´s also quite a distance... our heavy bombers really don´t care about Zeroes even though one of the fighters managed to down a bomber on it´s first pass...

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring LCT-144

what have we learnt today? Bombers attack barges and landing craft like all other ships in AE... is this a change from WITP or is it a bug? The single Spitfire that leaked out of Groote Eylandt claims a Nell shot down, another one crashes... these LCTs actually are worth their weight in gold in this region as they are going to do the main transportation...

follow on sweep draws more fighters as usual but they all got shredded... having the dive for nearly all of the engagement... those people constantly saying that the dive only last for a short moment when you take out two or perhaps three enemy fighters must be nuts... for a long time I reall thought they would just be ignorant or not watching the replays while still doing comments about the outcome but I cam to the conclusion that they must be plain stupid and I´m trying not to argue with them anymore... in this enagement alone we claimed 9 Tojos shot down during the dive... 9 out of 12... the dive ended and we instantly lost a Lightning... 18 enemy fighters claimed for one loss sure is a good result... and I would still rather see a realistic airwar and not the stratosphere sweeps against leaking Cap all the time...

tying to 100% damage the port too, this should make any attempt of evacuation even harder... it´s only a level 3 port anyway so trying to evac some 100.000 troops while being in range of my bombers really sounds like a suicide mission to me... and it will only get worse from day to day...

nice bug, the PB4Y-1 are set on naval attack but they attack DARWIN at 1000ft... sounds like the same old bug of Kamikazes attacking land targets... [8|] there are no friging ships at Darwin... a bomber is lost... these are one of my most valuable aircraft so every single one lost is a pretty bad thing and it´s more than annoying to lose them to bugs...

back to back sweep to Rahaeng... usually I set my fighters/bombers on a day rest after a long range mission but this also makes my attacks somewhat predictable so from time to time I do back to back attacks when they´re probably not expected...

the small number of leakers was shot to pieces as usual... it´s a pity, but that´s the only way to go, otherwise I would bleed my fighter squadrons and would run out of Lightnings within 2 weeks and would never recover if I would keep up attacking at reasonable alt or when trying to engage the enemy directly over his bases... halve a dozen Tojos downed for no loss...

clear sky? Funnily enough that the enemy always gets clear sky when attacking LCUs in Burma... this can´t be happening by accident all the time, especially not when you think about how seldom you see clear sky... not true for this PBEM and ground attacks in Burma, the enemy seems to always get clear sky... odd... being in the jungle, weather doesn´t matter at all though... my tanks are hidden in the jungle... [8|] how does that sound? I guess you couldn´t even move through this hex with armoured units...

clear sky during ground atttack in Burma? hey, can´t be... something new? no... [8|] if this isn´t strange then I don´t know what... but that´s surely something only happening in my special edition I bet... the rest of Burma is completely sucked in all the time, but my LCUs are always attacked in clear sky...

16 x Beaufighter Ic sweeping at 20000 feet

guess I´ve got to stand my Beaufighters down or reduce their range, they are stationed at Nadzab and always try to escort the heavies from PM, which isn´t what I want them to do... they should escort my bombers on navattack that are stationed at Nadzab waiting for a target... a pity you can´t give specific orders... this worked better in WITP IMO... in AE you usually get no coordination where you want coordination and coordination where you think it would be totally stupid to do so (when the bases are separated by 20 hexes and they meet at the target in the middle of the two bases)...
