Anti Tank Guns vs. Anti Tank Guns

In one of the previous battles in my current H2H-GC we had an (Anti Tank) Gunfight. We were fighting on Gold beach. My Guns were in the Bunkers on the left, his were in the long hedgerow on the right. Sadly I lost the fight, but I noted that my guns were using AP-Shells. Shouldn't they use HE? An AT Gun is a rather soft target, the metal shields attached to it should be no match for HE-Shells.
