Squad Leader

Close Combat – Last Stand Arnhem is a highly enhanced new release of Close Combat, using the latest Close Combat engine with many additional improvements. Its design is based on the critically acclaimed Close Combat – A Bridge Too Far, originally developed by Atomic Games, as well as the more recent Close Combat: The Longest Day. This is the most ambitious and most improved of the new Close Combat releases, but along with all the enhancements it retains the same addicting tactical action found in the original titles! Close Combat – Last Stand Arnhem comes with expanded force pools, reserve & static battlegroups, a troop point buying system, ferry and assault crossings, destructible bridges, static forces and much more! Also included in this rebuild are 60+ battles, operations and campaigns including a new enhanced Grand Campaign!

Squad Leader

Post by xe5 »

Way back in the mid-90s, CC started out as the computer version of Avalon Hill's "Squad Leader" boardgame. With LSA it feels like that premise has finally come to fruition. Some of my AB BGs have been whittled down to mere squads. The effects of cohesion and fatigue mean the loss of 2 men from a squad like this will knock my force morale below 50% ("We're losing a lot of men"). Its more enjoyable and immersive defending a single VL with a fragile squad than fighting across the entire map with 3 full platoons.

I think I watched Vic Morrow in this episode of "Combat" when I was a kid :)

Demoted Co. HQ

Lt Hampton became a casualty. There were no officers available as replacements. So Pvt lanier was put in charge and the Company HQ team was demoted.

Three hours later (next battle) and Pvt Lanier has oddly grown into the role thrust upon him as Company commander...

Well, I'm still kicking the AI's butt even with the patch. The only exception is the Arnhem Bridge map where my few British troops are desperately holding a small area.

The main issue I'm still having with the AI is the deployment and the tiny/predictable deployment zones that are given to the Germans as they attack a map held by my allied units. I can usually just slaughter the Germans as they are grouped into the tiny deployment zones. Even when the Germans are given spacious deployment zones they are still deploying in open areas near VLs.

And although the Tac AI seems more aggressive than before the beta patch, it is still predictably sending it's units straight for the nearest VL regardless of nearby cover that it could be using as an approach to said VL. All I have to do sometimes is sit and wait, then the slaughter begins.

I think Minor Victory / Major etc simply totals up the VL's or VL points at the end of the battle.
In this case you had 6 to the Germans's 4, so minor victory even though your morale broke and they gained 3 extra VL's.
