Strat map design questions

Post by xe5 »

Im curious about a few design decisions on the strat map:

1. Dinther - the map shows a small bridge over the canal between Schijndel and Dinther. Was this bridge blown/bombed during OMG, or was the combination of the canal and the Aa River considered impassable for gasme purposes?

2. Why do Dinther and Uden share a long border but no connection?

3. The map shows a road south of the Maas but no connection between Ravenstein and Grave.

4.Teersdijk and Overasselt share a border but no connection.

5. Elst and Heteren share a border but no connection.

The strat map could have been drawn to avoid having the shared borders in 4. & 5. Elst looks like it was drawn so that it could have a connection with heteren.

6. The south east "leg" of Johanna Hoeve Farm looks like it was designed to block the connection between N. Oosterbeek and Arnhem Heights and/or to create a connection between J. Hoeve Farm and West Arnhem.

Inquiring minds, of the sort that only have maps for reading material in the loo, want to know the why and because.

The spacebar provides a quick look of all the strat connections removing the need for the somewhat artificial, contrived and convoluted old method of communicating map connections via shared strat map borders. The map area borders have always been arbitrary and don't really represent any particular boundary from real life so are abstractions to begin with. Initially we tried to maintain the old system but abandoned the idea as it began to create some very strange shaped boundaries (more so than some that are in there now) as the connection scheme was modified making the map difficult to view in the more congested areas.

Rivers and canals are another example of what you're talking about where map areas share common boundaries with no connection. Technically speaking any of the rivers or canals could've been crossed during OMG. But Steve chose to utilize the crossing points that had historical relevance as an abstraction.

Thanks for the interest.

If using the spacebar removes the need for the traditional method of representing movement connections on an area game map, then perhaps that user action should be documented somewhere other than an obscure post to the forum.

Yep good point. Thought it was in there as it was discussed as needing to go into the manual. Will make sure it gets done. Thanks for pointing it out.

I am still wondering why the strategic map is drawn in such a way you would assume a connection. Instead of drawing a nice stratmap, the spacebar option was added. Most notably added for the Wacht Am Rhein strategic map vomit session. The space bar command is like finding the decipher ring in a cereal box. CC4, CC5, GJS and most other mods have very good example strat maps.

The space bar options help but it is best when you just look at the strat map image and know what connects to what....
