Visible Squares / Script Errors?
So is there a way to check a square before you actually move there?
I am playing a guy, and I get script errors or something like that. My opponent says he has changed the view?
Thanks.
So far an interesting game.

I'm not sure what you mean? Check a square for what?
What do you mean about script errors?

He might me planning on checking visibility and cover / terain factors.
RE: Visible Squares / Script Errors?
Yes check a square and what is visible from that square. If I remember correctly you could do that in Jonn Tiller Camapaign series game. Sorry for the confusion.

I will see if I can copy the error when I get my next move.

Ok, it says, "Script or other data does not match yours."

Thats not a good sign - that means your opponet has different data & scripts to you. This should never happen in multiplayer unless someone has edited a file which they should not do except to create mods and new scenarios. Changing the base games data & scripts is somethign that you should never do. This check is in there to prevent cheating. It may be an innocent change but definitely best to bring it up with your opponent.

Hmmmm, he could be cheating then. Moving an M10 into my field of vision 3 hexes away against a Pz IV G in a fixed position should be a dead duck, but this player seems to have much better intelligence as to where I am. I doubt it's innocent. He did mention he was "looking" at things. I didn't understand what he "meant" by that.
I just assumed you couldn't cheat MP.

Hexes is an approximation of course. There aren't any hexes, I know this. Just a visaul approximation.
Is there a way to tell how many yards away a target is? That would be a nice feature.

I may just concede the battle to this guy. YOU WIN, enjoy.

And what about checking for visible squares from a particular spot? Thanks.

RE: Visible Squares / Script Errors?
You can cheat at any game in multiplayer but what we do is warn you with this message of potential cheating. The system is very clever and very hard to cheat without getting caught! I would tell the other play you are aware his scripts are different to yours and ask him why? There could be innocent reasons but it is definietely worth asking.
As for a tank being a dead duck at 3 tiles - that totally depends on whether you moved, target moved, morale, terrain etc etc. Nothing is sure in war!

You can only check what a unit can see - press the 1 key with the unit selected. It is not realistic to know what would be visible from a tile miles away from a poisition you control - you have to guess as commanders would in real life.

RE: Visible Squares / Script Errors?
It is possible he wasn't trying to cheat on purpose, but just did some modding of the script files. Anyhow, the warning is there for a reason, someone has tampered with the script or the squads config file. At least you should tell him you are aware of it.
Ask for an explanation.

Obsolete,
He seems to know exactly where everythying was positioned. I just conceded the game to him. Buthering Mk IV G's in hidden stationary positions, and you roll into them with M10's and Sherman's does not feel right. It would if I were Mk IV's rolling into his postions and he destroyed me.
He even took out a Panther in a stationary protected postion. He wins, better player than I am (of course that ain't hard to do).
From now on I will only play with people I trust and know here on Matrix through private games.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind losing, but it felt fishy especially with the script error message.
Iain,
You are right dagnabit. [;)]

RE: Visible Squares / Script Errors?
You should never get this message from honest modding, as that won't change the core game script files. We bang home the point that you should NEVER alter the main game scripts. It's a shame that some people will try and cheat - even when they will get caught! Hopefully you made it clear that something was fishy, and perhaps he will learn his lesson...

RE: Visible Squares / Script Errors?
I did bring up the point early the beta to do a hash-check of all files, since I know clear well from all types of ladder clubs that if someone can cheat with a little tampering, they will.
I wonder though, if perhaps the person installed the latest bug-patch and that may have been enough to have a file-differential?
BTW, never leave your panther stationary, it allows your opponent to get higher accuracy on you.

RE: Visible Squares / Script Errors?
When the enemy does not have visual on you, and they come around the corner and the Panther is sitting there. BANG you should be dead, NEXT please.
Even if infantry is hidden and can see the Panther, I would still imagine to roll into sight on a stationary panther/frontal armor facing you with allied armor would be a very very scary thing to do. Better to call in air support unless you can overwhelm with lots of burning hulks. I know shoot and scoot.

RE: Visible Squares / Script Errors?
That's why the message came up - it checks all the game files to be sure you are playing against someone using the same scripts. The update was EXE only and wouldn't have caused any issue (which is why MP doesn't force you to update, it was a fix for buggy gfx card drivers only). How we update the scripts (should we want to) without it throwing messages is something we are working on - but I'm looking at re-writing the playback code so it allows you to rewind and repeat stuff, but it's quite a large job!
As someone getting pounded by Panthers as we speak, I think they do ok! Not that I don't get pounded by pretty much any side or indeed anyone...
Cheers
