What does "0" range mean in the new Bombardment toggle?

Post by ADB123 »

One of my pbem opponents and I are struggling to figure out what the new toggle settings mean for Naval Bombardments. When you set up a Naval Bombardment TF it defaults to a range of "0". Then, if you use the right or left toggle keys a non-zero range appears in 1000's of yards. Once you set a range you can not go back to "0", only down to 1000 yards. If you want to go back to "0" you have to rebuild the Naval Bombardment TF

So, does the default "0" mean that the old pre-toggle stand-off ranges are in effect?

Thanks -

My assumption would be they close in until in range to empty the garbage can on enemies turf.

But I have no idea, haven't used it so far.
If you gained knowledge through the forum, why not putting it into the AE wiki?

If you could toggle the range down to "0", then I would agree with you. But since you can't I am betting that it is the old defaults. I hope that one of the Devs can clear this up for us.

This doesn't exactly answer your question but, the reason you don't generally want top go below a range of 14,000 to 18,000 yards with a heavy bombardment TF is due to the potential damage your ships could take from land based counter-fire. Depending on the composition of your Bombard TF and the subsequent range of the guns you plan to bombard with, the idea is to stay just out of range of all or most of the enemies shore weapons while in close as possible considering previous so as to maximize the effect of your bombardment while minimizing damage you take. To determine the range of the guns check the naval unit display on the main screen. By standing just out of shore gun range, ships deliver destruction without consequence. Generally I try to move in to just beyond the range of his biggest guns or in the absence of hard intel my best guess to the range of his biggest gun threats.

I guess if I felt certain all the enemy had on an atoll was an AA battery I might try zero range, but I haven't tried that yet.

Hope this is a little helpful

Okay, I've now had a chance to try this out under pbem conditions. I had a cruiser/DD TF bombarde a small, unoccupied base where my opponent had a damaged DD in port. The bombardment range was set to "0". The ships came in and essentially fired everything they had, closing in to 3000 yards which was the max range of the small guns on the DDs.

So from this one test (and in the absence of confirmation from the Devs), I am assuming that the intial "0" setting means the maximum range of the shortest ranged gun on one of the ships in the Bombardment TF.

In any event, I'm glad that there wasn't any opposition at that base our my ships would likely have been in big trouble.

But assuming that this "single point" is correct, what this means is that from now on whenever I send out a Bombardment TF I have to set the minimum range or else the TF will close in to a range that is likely much closer than I want.

I'm not really sure that I like that better than the old method because this means yet more micromanagement.

If anyone has any information to the contrary, please let me know.

Thanks -

BTW - In case you are wondering, the TF got 31 hits on the Port, but none on the DD in the Port. C'est le guerre...

Here's a screenshot of a Bombardment Taskforce with the new toggle setting circled hbrsvl.

That TF is "Docked at Pearl Harbor". Is that a PBEM? If so, nice job

No, Q-Ball it's an AI game with a lot of cheating by me. I want to see how quickly I can capture all the Allied Bases.

If you hit the double arrow the bombardment range will go back to 0 range.
I do bombardments at 0 range on smaller ports with some CD defense and have escaped with only minor damage to my naval ships. With larger Ports and bigger defended I probably won't be so fearless. Lol

If you hit the double arrow the bombardment range will go back to 0 range.

Only if you do it with a right click. The label says it clearly "Right-click to clear the range".
