Who can help

Post by Insurrectio »

Hello. Lurking for long time, played Witp a lot. Just bought AE and looking here to see some things. There is lots of things that everybody says, but much of it is not right, whatever why, do not know or care.

Can people here help with a top 10 list of people who know what they are talking about and who a newby can listen and believe.

TY, Leafy.

I generally trust the developers; among whom are jwilkerson, jwe, Don Bowen, Andrew Brown, AndyMac, theElf, michaelm, TimTom, TankerAce, Blackhorse, Kereguelen, BigJ62, wdolson and Treespider. I'm sure that there are others whose names aren't coming to me at this moment.

The only advice worth listening to comes from... me, of course! [:D][;)]

Seriously, questions about game mechanics are almost always answered correctly, and if not several people with point out errors. Topics related to tactics, strategy etc.. well, in many cases there are many opinions, and this game is sufficiently complex so that there isn't a simple right or wrong...

First of all, welcome to the forums!

Second, a question about whose answers you can trust brings up this question: how do you know you can trust the answers you get about whose answers you can trust?

I think bradforkay's answer is a good one, though, all kidding aside. And there are a lot of other knowledgeable and helpful people here. Remember that this is a very large and complicated game and if you ask ten people here a question you might get ten different answers, all of them accurate to some degree or another. It's kind of like the story of the five blind men trying to figure out what an elephant is. "Ah, an elephant is like a spear!" one says, encountering a tusk. "An elephant is like a tree," says another, encountering a leg. And so on.

Short answer?  See Bradforkay's post.

Long answer?  Not everyone will agree about who to listen to.  Personality conflicts aside, people learn in one of four basic ways and the best teachers might be able to impart knowledge in three of those.

As to who you can safely ignore, My name will be at the top of the list[:D].

When you post a question just remember to include your list of names so that the rest of us know enough not to answer.

Since no one who has replied in this thread so far is on the list, how can that list be reliably established?? All our replies could be nonsense!

I figured that the only way to keep personalities out of it was to list the developers only... there shouldn't be any claims as to bias in that listing.

EDIT: it doesn't mean that the rest of us do or do not know what we are talking about, just that he can rely upon answers from those guys. I know that I have posted good information and misinformation in response to threads in the past, and I am sure that the same can be said for everyone else.

I hate to say, but over the years there has been a lot of incorrect advice given over the forum. You will find threads talking about how the game works with several veteran players disagreeing widely over what is going on under the hood. It is not that silly of a question - even if it is a little insulting - to wonder as to whose answers might be the "real thing". This is why I gave the answer that I did, naming only those who were part of the team developing AE.

There is another word.. which begins with disre..... which will elicit responses similar to the Knights who Say Niii in Monty Python and the Holy Grail amongst the populace here. Methinks this is the basis for Msr.Bullwinkle's post.

As far as being able to glean information from respondents on this board - there is a healthy respect between most members on the board, but, I don't know if there will be a consensus on tactics, strategy, or what to have for dinner in most of our discussions.

I think this is the most usefull forum I have ever seen.  Most things are discussed in an open format, and disagreements are almost always both civil, and based on some sort of reasoning ( weather you agree with it or not).

Don't worry about folks who "know what they are talking about".  If someone posts something incorrect, it usually gets a fast response from the rest of the forum.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

IMHO, you might start by listening to advice from those who actually OWN a copy of the game...

Yes...in past, WITP has had critics and experts who freely admitted they had spent no more time around it than to cast a shadow near the monitor the play was being played on,(or similar words)..

Further, anybody can become an expert at the game, by owning it, and playing it.

The great folks you meet on this forum are just a bonus.

Welcome to the Pacific..

Get your feet wet.

Yep, I try to read every thread and pretty much have done so since I joined the forum back when UV was in development. Everybody has something to contribute and has a notion about how the game works. I filter it and then confirm it with my own experiences to see what works for me.  Some people know a lot but as far as I have seen nobody knows it all.

I will say this, there is no way to become truly competent at play unless you regularly read the threads on this forum.
