Warhammer arrived Monday. Pretty entertaining game. Now I know where the ideas for Company of Heroes came from. The only thing I don't like about it is that you can't sell or unbuild base structures once you build them. And your units can't walk very close to the base structures so you have to be sure not to block your units in with your base structures. [:o]

Is it DoW I or II, Gary?

DoW 1 was the last RTS game I played properly. I've been a fan of RTS since Dune II, however DoW just seemed to be missing something and since that, I seem to have lost my RTS mojo. I've heard the 2nd one is different, more RPG?

The only RTS game I really liked was the Age of Empires series, ending with The Conquerors expansion. Great game in the end, still play it now and then. I've had a few graphics issues with it running under Win 7 but they are relatively minor and the game is still playable.
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

Loved Warcraft III, some of the best cinematics I've seen.

I forgot, I still played Rome:Total War until recently. The best of the Total War games by far. Shogun II:Total War looks promising.

Well how about AI War?

I'm DL now, and according to LarryP its a great game. The developer is also donating the proceeds from his latest expansion to a Chidren's charity FWIW. You have to get the Children of Neinzul from his official website since it is still in beta.

Gary; Dragon Age: Origins. It's on sale at Gamersgate and is highly rated everywhere. I just started it last weekend and what I read about the game so far is true. Huge, excellent story (for once the story actually has depth and meaning) the fighting can be paused like in Baldurs Gate 2 and done in steps with pausing, excellent interface, and too much to tell it all here.

It has tons of little things that are done right. They all add up to a great game.

If this game bores you soon then I will be immensely surprised. [X(]

EDIT: I just looked at Gamersgate and the price is back up to $40. The sale for this game stopped I guess at midnight last Sunday. Last week it was $20. Oh well, sorry about that. It's still worth every penny of $40 compared to other games at that price and higher.

It has NO multiplayer. They put all their efforts into the single player campaign. At least that's their excuse/reason. [;)]

Yes they are everywhere....which makes my game buying easy as I do not buy them at all only those sort of RTS games like Oblivion. They are an illusion, clever well written and mostly a challenge but not for this old guy. I find first person shooters to be a boring experience perhaps because I just don't seem to get the hang of it. No matter how different or diverse they are all FPS. I tried playing some of the real RTS games you mentioned but they just are not for me.
Heck I would even love to be able to play WitP AE but just get bogged down in all that micro stuff. I am so bad i can hardly keep up with the old WitP game but after 5 years of trying I finally made it to the simmer of 42! and am only....well slightly ahead of the AI. How I wish I had the where with all but it would just take to much of my time but I think that AE finally has reached the point where we see a lot less strange or bad design and have reached a point where it is a great game and perhaps I will give it a fling one day but being 70 (in Dec) I might not have enough time to figure it out. I know I could not play the Japan side as the management of the industry would be to much for me.....I mean if I can't play them in the old WitP well you get the drift.
I have this nightmare that one day soon there will be only RTS games which would cut down on my game buying.

I respect the decision to focus on single player, but I wasn't impressed by Dragon Age:Origins. I got bored when I reached the town near the start, can't remember it's name. There were so many generic subquests quests, like kill the wolves, kill the giant spiders, free the prisoner, kill more wolves, I think I even found someones lost ring. It took me hours in that little town and I just lost interest.

EDIT: Lothering! That's what that little town was called. And it was little, tiny even, and I was running back and forward for hours. Sorry if I'm bashing the game a bit too much, but I had high hopes for it. Also, it was a click-fest. To defeat a boss with magic, you just have to run away and wait until your mana regenerates then hit them with a spell, rinse and repeat.

I respect every gamers opinion of a game no matter what it is. A game is only as good as the enjoyment the individual gets from it. I haven't done any side quests, I ignore them. For me it has not even been close to a clickfest. I don't use the magic part of any game, I always choose the warrior or similar and that way I skip tons of management issues. Besides, I think the magic aspect of games has gone too far. It's just plain childish to me.

I did not spend long in Lothering but did every thing there was to do.

I read at Gamespot that 11,044 reviewers gave the game a 9.0, and the site reviewer gave it a 9.5. In PCGamer a 9.2 and it was the featured article. The reviewer spent over 120 hours playing the game and loved it. Then I get on the forum for the game at Steam and post after post said the game was boring, CTD's, bad inventory management, etc..

What can I say but I happened to like the game, and I dislike RTS games very much. It must have just hit a good note with me. [&:]

There is no reason to apologize for bashing any game. An honest experience that is shared is valuable no matter what the outcome. Gary needs to read all sides. Thank you. [&o]

Thanks for putting up with my little rant, Larry.[:)]

I'm obviously in the minority of people that didn't like the game, but I must say that it ran very smoothly and without errors on my old computer. It was very stable with me also.
