The ToS Top 5 countdown: Fave weapons!

Post by Korgmeister »

I'm not making a poll for this. Just list your favourite weapons and a little reason why.

I imagine Larkin will use this as an excuse to 'tone down' some of the weapon systems in Warring Suns...but oh well!

#1: Flame Throwers.
Their max range of 1 makes them slightly superior to CC weapons (can be fired while moving) they are highly accurate and much better at jacking up heat than Napalm Missiles. No titan has a ghost of a chance against a quad deck of flamers unless it's shielded or in a polar environment.

#2: Chain Saws.
15 points of damage. A fast reload time. Very little heat, and a bitchin' sound effect that makes me cackle like a madman every time I let rip with them. What's not to like?

#3: Large Laser.
It's light, fast, compact, with a decent range and doesn't suck up nearly as much juice as the 'novelty' weapons like the BRG. All in all an excellent bog standard main gun.

#4: Machine Gun
Most people are going to think I'm insane for putting it at #4, but that's only because the other 3 weapons are so **** brilliant!
The ultmate acessory for the CC titan, and the ultimate 'sidearm' weapon. It's light damage is made up for by it's quick reload rate, and IMO it beats the small laser hands down every time.
Plus there's that psycho point blank mode that does insane amounts of damage once you're dancing toe-to-toe!

#5: Power Axe
Arguably more practical than the Chain Saw, but it's not as sexy and is very poor at called shots.
Korgmeister - Mad scientist of pessimistic ToS design and unluckiest ToS player in history.

Please note that all comments that any weapon, design, tactic etc are better are: FROM AN ENTIRELY SUBJECTIVE POINT OF VIEW and should be recieved in such light

I'll generally choose power axes over chainsaws. Lighter. Moreroom for armor, which essential on any titan using saws or axes.
I see your lips moving, but all I hear is: Blah Blah Blah, I'm a friggin moron.

Don't worry, Larkin doesn't change things just because people think they're too good. He actually plays the game too. :)
I can tell you one thing. The LL was changed, since beta testing started. Range was reduced by one, heat slightly increased, and power too (so it is now a 3 PU weapon like all big energy weapons). The LL was one of the best weapons in v1.4.

Despite it's power-sucking and heat generating glut, I really like the plasma gun. I'm not quite sure why - the extreme long range damage, I guess. I've just always loved it.
We sometimes catch a window
A glimpse of what's beyond
Was it just imagination
Stringing us along?
More things than are dreamed about
Unseen and unexplained
We suspend our disbelief
And we are entertained

Did I mention that the PG was also changed?
Here's another part of my log:

SL heat drops to 6C.

ML heat raised to 15C.

LL heat raised to 22C and recycle to 17 PUs, range lowered to 13.

PG range lowered to 17.

AC20 range lowered to 8.

AC12 heat raised to 17C.

AC7 heat raised to 12C.

LRM heat raised by 3C for all racks.

GMs now GMHs, racks now 2 and 4.

We are trying to balance weapons for WS but I have combos which I would choose as a beginner jock :

Plasma + Medium Laser, AC7 + MG, GMH + GME, LRM + SRM,
Power Axe + Flamer

But ToS WS is too complex to go with one setup. Its vital that you have titans for different opposition.

I love weapons with misc. effects like smoke screens and lighting woods.

mmm....
ill try a 1-5 list like korg, and for the record, Hetz really does like NBs x(

#1 Black Ray Gun. C'mon, you know in your heart of hearts that you really do love knocking titans down with the first shot to them. Also the better wood burning thing is nice. Bit high in the heat area though.

#2 Gauss Cannon. I just like this gun. Long ranged, accurate, low heat, good recycle.... Only prob is its a bit bulky, and low ammo.

#3 Flame Thrower/NMs. ANY weapon that makes them fire not as often is good in my book. (read: Black Ray Gun)

#4 Chain Saw. MMM.... korg, i like that sound too.

#5 Tesla Bolt. Most Powerful weapon in the game gets a rank here. Prob is the high heat and short range. Though if you get three of these suckers on one titan and fire em all at once, SOMEONE's gonna die, and its not gonna be you. :)

NBs have their place, They tie for 5th with the tesla, mainly cuz they're both as effective at killing jocks. NB's greatest use is the fact that its da bomb at pissing off those jocks. *tseewww!!* *64pts of dmg to enemy jock* *tseewww!!!* *Jock is bleeding* *tseewww!!* *10 dmg across the board, jock unconscious* BWAHAHAHA!and they're light, small, reload quick, low heat... only prob is that they're short ranged. :( hmmm.... *thinks about replacing Tesla Bolt with NB...*

These are my preferred weapons:

1) AC 7: probably the best medium weapon of the game, if you make comparisons between benefits and problems :)
3) Black Ray Gun: good damage, plus affects titans which are moving....
2) Plasma Gun: good damage, fantastic range
3) NM 14: good range, good damage, and they overheat your opponent
5) Power Axe: the best weapon for CC 'cause it has got a quick reload and a good damage

For Phun: NBs

For effectiveness: AC20s

Best closing weapon: PBs

Best close up Terror weapon: Teslas

Highest weight/space/damage ratio: SRMs

Most devastating weapon when not in Polar: NRMs

Weapon needing the most fire discipline: Heavy Mesons

Best Bargin: LLs

Best weapon for calling shots: GC

So for all of you newcomers and fledgling designers there ain't no such thing as a perfect design (cept of course for the Mugger and in any map larger than small every missle boat on the enemy side will be gunning for it).

Think about the assaults of mine that you've driven. Each one has it's own personality. Each one is built around one primary weapons system. In a team game I take these designs and use them to create balance. And remember I've beaten you with you driving and with me driving so it's not the Titan that's unbalanced.

Autocannons all the way.

Auto 12 (doesn't use 1 PU to fire like Gauss and weighs less and generates less heat)

Gauss cannon (long range, accuracy)

Machine Gun (at point blank this is total destruction)

Also I like Flame Throwers for their good damage and heat generation...

NB, PG, CLG are also good. Don't use other energy weapons than these.

Also I prefer not to use CC weapons, as the recycle time is better with only punches and the damage (with assault titans) is not worse than it is with CC weapons.

should be somewhat expected but here it goes:

#1: AC20 if you haven't figured it out this thing is my absolute favorite only cuz its huge and i follow the biggest gun wins theory (besides that IM NUTS!)

#2: Chainsaws/Poweraxes you can't get much better damage/reload-time wise than these puppies

#3: GM/LRM good damage great range fair reload time use them in bulk (between 4 and 10 if i can fit them hehe)

#4: AC4-AC12 alright i gotta give these some credit not as big as the ac20 but there fairly good for hitting the enemy at a good rate with fair damage at a fair distance

#5: Lasers in general alright i avoid lasers personnaly but i do rank them at number 5 because of there good accuracy and distance and because the tesla does more damage than the ac20

Uhhh.... Gauss cannon at long range, coupled with AC7s or NBs. Called shots and jock liquification. Boom or splat.

My favorite top 5 weapons:

Gauss Rifles -- bonus to hit, good damage and range.

Plasma Gun -- good range--a bit hot, but makes a good support weapon to GMs.

GMs -- works great, unless the enemy uses flares and ECM excessively.

Chain Saws -- make light mechs kick some, especially in areas with reduced line of sight. (Sneak up, thwack, thwack, and kick 'em while they're down)

Cold Light Gun -- either this or ACs. Provide additional punch with low heat.
